Mycorrhiza and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria:Potential Bioagents for Sustainable Phosphorus Management in Agriculture显示文摘Phosphorus(P)is a critical nutrient that plays an essential role in improving soil fertility for optimum plant growth and productivity. It is one of the most deficient macro-nutrients in agricultural soils after nitrogen and is considered inadequate for plant growth and production. To P availability in soils, the farmers are applying huge amounts of synthetic P fertilizers that adversely affect the wider environment, groundwater, soil fertility and microbial population. Many beneficial microbes are known to release and supply soluble P for improving growth and yield of a variety of plants in a sustainable manner in P deficient soils. Thus, inoculation of these microbes, including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi(AMF)and phosphate solubilizing bacteria(PSB)to soil to enhance crop production without harming the environment,is an alternative approach to chemical fertilizers. The combined role of AMF and PSB in P solubilization is not well understood and the application and mode of action of these microbial groups are often naive due to variation in the environment. Therefore, the current review article would develop a better understanding of the interactive role and mechanisms of AMF and PSB in improving P availability from both organic and inorganic sources in a sustainable crop production system. Finally, the current review would loop out further avenues for researchers interested to commercially produce effective AMF and PSB-based biofertilizers for sustainable management of phosphorus over a wide range of agricultural crops worldwide.Fazli Wahid Muhammad Sharif Shah Fahad Amjad Ali Muhammad Adnan Rafiullah Shah Saud Subhan Danish Muhammad Arif Ali Niaz Ahmed Hüseyin Arslan Doğan Arslan Murat Erman Ayman EL Sabagh Fatemeh Gholizadeh Rahul Datta 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,2:2
Potentiality of Different Seed Priming Agents to Mitigate Cold Stress of Winter Rice Seedling显示文摘Seed priming has proved to be an effective pre-germination seed invigoration technique for different crops to improve seed and seedling performance under different abiotic stresses. In Bangladesh, winter rice is very often exposed to cold waves just after sowing in the nursery bed resulting in poor seed germination and seedling emergence, yellowish and thin seedlings production, and a very low survival rate.Seed priming may mitigate the cold stress during seed germination and seedling emergence and helps in the quality seedling production of winter rice.To evaluate the efficacy of different seed priming techniques in increasing seedling emergence, growth, vigor and survivability of winter rice cultivars under cold stress,a pot experiment was conducted at the Department of Agronomy,Bangladesh Agricultural University during December 2018 to January 2019.The experiment comprised two factors,(A)Winter rice variety namely,(i)BRRI dhan29 and (ii)BRRI dhan36;(B)Seed priming agent namely (i)Control(no priming),(ii)20000 ppm NaCl,(iii)30000 ppm NaCl,(iv)20000 ppm KCl,(v)30000 ppm KCl,(vi)20000 ppm CaCl2,(vii)30000 ppm CaCl2,(viii)50 ppm CuSO4,(ix)75 ppm CuSO_(4),(x)10000 ppm ZnSO4,(xi)15000 ppm ZnSO4,(xii)2 ppm Na2MoO4,(xiii)3 ppm Na2MoO4,(xiv)100 ppm PEG(Polyethylene glycol 4000)and (xv)150 ppm PEG.Seeds were sown on two different dates viz.,1st December and 1st January so that seedlings are exposed to cold stress at different stages. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design(CRD)with three replications. Results indicated that(in most of the cases)seed priming has a positive impact on seedling emergence rate(%),root length, shoot length, root shoot ratio, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, seedling dry weight and survival rate(%).Among the priming agents,KCl and CaCl2 performed best;while priming with NaCl and PEG showed no advantages over no priming for both the sowing dates. In general,BRRI dhan36 performed better than BRRI dhan29 in terms of seedling growth because of its higher tolerance to cold stress. But,both the varieties performed similarly in terms of emergence rate and survival rate. Thus, priming is an effective tool to increase seed germination, better seedling growth, and higher seedling survivability of winter rice under cold stress, and KCl(20000 ppm)or CaCl2(20000 ppm)can be considered as a viable priming agent.Md.Parvez Anwar Md.Ariful Islam Khalid A.K.M.Mominul Islam Sabina Yeasmin Sharif Ahmed Adel Hadifa Ismail A.Ismail Akbar Hossain Ayman EL Sabagh 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,5:1
Foliar Application of Phosphorus Enhances Photosynthesis and Biochemical Characteristics of Maize under Drought Stress显示文摘Water is essential for the growth period of crops;however, water unavailability badly affects the growth and physiological attributes of crops, which considerably reduced the yield and yield components in crops. Therefore,a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar phosphorus(P)on morphological, gas exchange, biochemical traits, and phosphorus use efficiency(PUE)of maize(Zea mays L.)hybrids grown under normal as well as water deficit situations at the Department of Agronomy,University of Agriculture Faisalabad,Pakistan in 2014.Two different treatments(control and P@8 kg ha^(−1))and four hybrids(Hycorn,31P41,65625,and 32B33)of maize were tested by using a randomized complete block design(RCBD)with three replications. Results showed that the water stress caused a remarkable decline in total soluble protein(9.7%),photosynthetic rate(9.4%)and transpiration rate(13.4%),stomatal conductance(10.2%),and internal CO_(2)rate(20.4%)comparative to well-watered control. An increase of 37.1%,36.8%,and 24.5%were recorded for proline, total soluble sugar, and total free amino acid, respectively. However, foliar P application minimized the negative impact of drought by improving plant growth,physio-biochemical attributes, and PUE in maize plants under water stress conditions.Among the hybrids tested, the hybrid 6525 performed better both under stress and non-stress conditions. These outcomes confirmed that the exogenous application of P improved drought stress tolerance by modulating growth,physio-biochemical attributes, and PUE of maize hybrids.Zahoor Ahmad Ejaz Ahmad Waraich Muhammad Zia ur Rehman Muhammad Ashar Ayub Muhammad Usman Hesham Alharby Atif Bamagoos Celaleddin Barutçular Muhammad Ali Raza FatihÇiğ Ayman El Sabagh 2021Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2021,90,2:1

Estimation of Genetic Divergence and Character Association Studies in Local and Exotic Diversity Panels of Soybean(Glycine max L.)Genotypes显示文摘The availability of favorable genetic diversity is a thriving vitality for the success of a breeding program. It provides a firm basis of selecting superior breeding lines for the development of high yielding crop genotypes. In this context, present investigation aimed to generate information on genetic divergence and character association in a diversity panel of 123 local and exotic soybean genotypes.Analysis of variance revealed significant response of the evaluated genotypes based on studied attributes. It depicted the probability of selecting desirable soybean genotypes by focusing on character association studies and genetic diversity analysis.Correlation analysis revealed that seed yield per plant showed high positive correlation with 100-seed weight followed by pods per plant and plant height.Furthermore, path coefficient analysis exposed that pods per plant had maximum direct contribution in seed yield per plant followed by 100-seed weight, days to flowering and SPAD measurement.Genotype named“G-10”showed maximum yield per plant followed by 24607,G-52,24593,Arisoy,24566,17426,A-3127,24570 and 24567.Genetic diversity analysis grouped the evaluated germplasm into 17 clusters. All clusters showed zero intra-cluster variability;while inter-cluster divergence ranged from 9.00 to 91.11.Cluster V showed maximum inter-cluster distance with cluster XII followed by that of between V and VIII.Moreover, cluster IV with superior genotypes(G-10,24607,24593 and 24566),VI(17426 and 24567),XIII(24570)and X(Arisoy and G-52)showed above mean values for most of the studied characters.Overall, the results of hybridization between the superior genotypes of these cluster pairs might be useful for soybean breeding with improving agronomic traits and adaptability.Syed Ali Zafar Muhammad Aslam Haroon Zaman Khan Sehrish Sarwar Rao Saad Rehman Mariam Hassan Ramala Masood Ahmad Rafaqat AGill Basharat Ali Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Abdullah Ibrahim Md Atikur Rahman Ayman El Sabagh 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,6:0
Phenotypic Characterization of Oryza nivara(Sharma et Shastry)Collected from Different Ecological Niches of Sri Lanka显示文摘Information on the genetic diversity of wild rice species in Sri Lanka is relatively meagre, though it plays a key role in crop improvement programs of cultivated rice(Oryza sativa L.).The present study was carried out to identify the morphological variation pattern of the wild populations of O.nivara in Sri Lanka.Seven populations(P1 to P7)collected from different agro-ecological regions were characterized in a common garden based on nine morphological traits. The findings revealed a high level of phenotypic variation between populations when compared to within a population. The most variable traits were the flag leaf panicle neck length(FLPNL)and flag leaf angle(FLA),whereas the least variable trait was the flag leaf length(FLL).Box plots clearly illustrated the large differentiation of phenotypic traits in the entire distribution of wild rice populations. The cumulative values of the two principal components,i.e.,FLPNL and FLA,explained 58.7%of the total variance.Populations from similar natural habitats clustered together. The P7 was adapted to intercept more sunlight by increasing flag leaf width(FLW)and FLA to compete with weeds and other shrubs.P2 and P5 were the most closely related populations representing approximately similar ecological conditions of the dry zone. The P3 population from the intermediate zone showed a vigorous plant growth with the highest plant height, culm girth and awn length(P<0.05).Knowledge of such morphological diversity would facilitate designing conservation strategies and basic information for the proper utilization of wild resources in rice genetic improvement.Salinda Sandamal Asanka Tennakoon Parakkrama Wijerathna Song Ge DABN Amarasekera Buddhi Marambe Sara MElwany Sobhy Sorour Ayman El Sabagh Mohamed M.Hassan Disna Ratnasekera 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,6:0
Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System Assessment of the Nutrients Limiting and Nutritional Status of Tomato显示文摘Tomato is an important field crop, and nutritional imbalances frequently reduce its yield.Diagnosis and Recommendation Integrated System(DRIS),uses ratios for nutrient deficiency diagnosis instead of absolute concentration in plant tests. In this study, local DRIS norms for the field tomatoes were established and the nutrient(s)limiting tomatoes yield were determined.Tomato leaves were analyzed for nutrients,to identify nutritional status using the DRIS approach. One hundred tomatoes fields were selected from Chatter Plain Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Sheikupura Punjab Pakistan. The first fully matured leaf was sampled, rinsed, dried and ground for analyzing P,K,Ca,Mg,Cu,Fe,Mn and Zn using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrophotometer(ICP AES).Plant tissue N and S were measured by the combustion method. The tomatoes yields were recorded at each location. The data were divided into high-yielding(≥3.79 kg/10 plant)and low-yielding(<3.79 kg/10 plant)populations and norms were computed using standard DRIS procedures.High-yielding plant population had a statistically greater mean S and Fe than the low-yielding population. The average balance index, the sum of functions, for S and Fe were−11.04 and−5.17 which reflected deficiency of S and Fe.Plant nutrients norms established may optimize plant nutrition in field tomatoes for high yield.Rabia Manzoor Mohammad Saleem Akhtar Khalid Saifullah Khan Taqi Raza Muhammad Ishaq Asif Rehmani Carl Rosen Muhammad Khalil ur Rehman Nahla Zidan Fahad MAlzuaibr Nisreen MAbdulsalam Najla AKhateeb Majid Alhomrani Abdulhakeem SAlamri Javeed Ahmad Lone Muhammad Ammar Raza Ayman El Sabagh 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,12:0
Identification of QTLs for Yield and Associated Traits in F_(2) Population of Rice显示文摘Identification of quantitative trait loci(QTLs)controlling yield and yield-related traits in rice was performed in the F_(2) mapping population derived from parental rice genotypes DHMAS and K343.A total of 30 QTLs governing nine different traits were identified using the composite interval mapping(CIM)method.Four QTLs were mapped for number of tillers per plant on chromosomes 1(2 QTLs),2 and 3;three QTLs for panicle number per plant on chromosomes 1(2 QTLs)and 3;four QTLs for plant height on chromosomes 2,4,5 and 6;one QTL for spikelet density on chromosome 5;four QTLs for spikelet fertility percentage(SFP)on chromosomes 2,3 and 5(2 QTLs);two QTLs for grain length on chromosomes 1 and 8;three QTLs for grain width on chromosomes1,3 and 8;three QTLs for 1000-grain weight(TGW)on chromosomes 1,4 and 8 and six QTLs for yield per plant(YPP)on chromosomes 2(3 QTLs),4,6 and 8.Most of the QTLs were detected on chromosome 2,so further studies on chromosome 2 could help unlock some new chapters of QTL for this cross of rice variety.Identified QTLs elucidating high phenotypic variance can be used for marker-assisted selection(MAS)breeding.Further, the exploitation of information regarding molecular markers tightly linked to QTLs governing these traits will facilitate future crop improvement strategies in rice.Rohini Bhat Anil Kumar Singh Muntazir Mushtaq Romesh Kumar Salgotra Manmohan Sharma Basharat Ahmad Bhat Umer Basu Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Mohammad Anwar Hossain Akihiro Ueda Ayman El Sabagh 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,11:0
Role of Organic Amendments to Mitigate Cd Toxicity and Its Assimilation in Triticum aestivum L.显示文摘In soil biota, higher and enduring concentration of heavy metals like cadmium(Cd)is hazardous and associated with great loss in growth, yield, and quality parameters of most of the crop plants.Recently,in-situ applications of eco-friendly stabilizing agents in the form of organic modifications have been utilized to mitigate the adverse effects of Cd-toxicity.This controlled experiment was laid down to appraise the imprints of various applied organic amendments namely poultry manure(PM),farmyard manure(FYM),and sugarcane press mud(PS)to immobilize Cd in polluted soil. Moreover, phytoavailability of Cd in wheat was also accessed under an alkaline environment. Results revealed that the addition of FYM(5–10 ton ha^(-1))in Cd-contaminated soil significantly increased germination rate, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, spike length, biological and grain yield amongst all applied organic amendments. Moreover, the addition of FYM(5–10 ton ha^(-1))also reduced the phytoavailability of Cd by 73–85%in the roots,57–83%in the shoots, and 81–90%in grains of wheat crop. Thus,it is affirmed that incorporation of FYM(5–10 ton ha^(-1))performed better to enhance wheat growth and yield by remediating Cd.Thus, the application of FYM(5–10 ton ha^(-1))reduced the toxicity induced by Cd to plants by declining its uptake and translocation as compared to all other applied organic amendments to immobilize Cd under sandy alkaline polluted soil.Tauqeer Ahmad Yasir Sobia Aslam Muhammad Shahid Rizwan Allah Wasaya Muhammad Ateeq Muhammad Naeem Khan Sikander Khan Tanveer Walid Soufan Basharat Ali Allah Ditta Arpna Kumari Ayman EL Sabagh 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,11:0

Drought Tolerance in Mung Bean is Associated with the Genotypic Divergence, Regulation of Proline, Photosynthetic Pigment and Water Relation显示文摘Drought is one of the critical conditions for the growth and productivity of many crops including mung bean(Vigna radiata L.Wilczek).Screening of genotypes for variations is one of the suitable strategies for evaluating crop adaptability and global food security. In this context, the study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of four drought tolerant(BARI Mung-8,BMX-08010-2,BMX-010015,BMX-08009-7),and four drought sensitive(BARI Mung-1,BARI Mung-3,BU Mung-4,BMX-05001)mung bean genotypes under wellwatered(WW)and water deficit(WD)conditions. The WW treatment maintained sufficient soil moisture(22%±0.5%,i.e.,30%deficit of available water)by regularly supplying water.Whereas, the WD treatment was maintained throughout the growing period, and water was applied when the wilting symptom appeared. The drought tolerant(DT)genotypes BARI Mung-8,BMX-08010-2,BMX-010015,BMX-08009-7 showed a high level of proline accumulation(2.52–5.99 mg g^(−1) FW),photosynthetic pigment(total chlorophyll 2.96–3.27 mg g^(−1) FW at flowering stage, and 1.62–2.38 mg g^(−1) FW at pod developing stage),plant water relation attributes including relative water content(RWC)(82%–84%),water retention capacity(WRC)(12–14)as well as lower water saturation deficit(WSD)(19%–23%),and water uptake capacity(WUC)(2.58–2.89)under WD condition, which provided consequently higher relative seed yield. These indicate that the tolerant genotypes gained better physiobiochemical attributes and adaptability in response to drought conditions.Furthermore, the genotype BMX-08010-2 showed superiority in terms of those physio-biochemical traits, susceptibility index(SSI)and stress tolerance index(STI)to other genotypes.Based on the physiological and biochemical responses, the BMX-08010-2 was found to be a suitable genotype for sustaining yield under drought stress, and subsequently,it could be recommended for crop improvement through hybridization programs. In addition, the identified traits can be used as markers to identify tolerant genotypes for drought-prone areas.Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Mohd Mostofa Kamal Mohammad Faruk Hossain Jamil Hossain Mohammad Golam Azam Mst Masuma Akhter MKamrul Hasan Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Khalid FAlmutairi Ayman EL Sabagh Md Atikur Rahman Muhammad Aamir Iqbal Mohammad Sohidul Islam 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,3:0
Soil erosion assessment by RUSLE model using remote sensing and GIS in an arid zone显示文摘In this research,we used the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE)and Geographical Information System(GIS)to predict the annual rate of soil loss in the District Chakwal of Pakistan. The parameters of the RUSLE model were estimated using remote sensing data, and the erosion probability zones were determined using GIs.The estimated length slope(LS),crop management(C),rainfall erosivity(R),soil erodibility(K),and support practice(P)range from 0-68,227,0-66.61%,0-0.58,495.99-648.68 MJ/mm.t.ha^(-1).year^(-1),0.15-0.25 MJ/mm.t.ha^(-1).year^(-1),and 1 respectively. The results indicate that the estimated total annual potential soi loss of approximately 4,67,064.25 t.ha^(-1).year^(-1) is comparable with the measured'sediment ioss of 11,631 t.ha^(-1).year^(-1) during the water year 2020.The predicted soil erosion rate due to an increase in agricultural area is approximately 164,249.31 t.ha^(-1).year^(-1).In this study,we also used,Landsat imagery to rapidly achieve actual land use classification.Meanwhile,38.i3%of the region was threatened by very high soil erosion, where the quantity of soil erosion ranged from 365487.35 t.ha^(-1).year^(-1),Integrating GIS and remote sensing with the RUSLE model helped researchers achieve their final objectives.Land-use planners and decision-makers use the result's spatial distribution of soil erosion in District Chakwal for conservation and management planning.Pingheng Li Aqil Tariq Qingting Li Bushra Ghaffar Muhammad Farhan Ahsan Jamil Walid Soufan Ayman El Sabagh Mohamed Freeshah 2023International Journal of Digital Earth2023,16,1:0
Recent Developments to Mitigate Selenium Deficiency in Agricultural Eco-Systems显示文摘Under changing climate, trace elements like selenium(Se)have emerged as vital constituent of agro-ecosystems enabling crop plants to off-set the adverse effects of suboptimal growth conditions. The available form of selenium is important for boosting its bioavailability to crop plants having varied agro-botanical traits and root architectural systems. As compared to selenite, the selenate has a weaker soil bonding, higher absorption in the soil solution which results in a comparatively absorption by plant roots.Various factors including dry climate, high pH,optimal ambient air temperature, less accumulation of water, and low concentration of organic matter in the soil tend to boost the selenate ratio in the soil. The use of selenium pelleted seeds has emerged as an interesting and viable alternative to alleviate selenium deficiency in agricultural eco-systems.Similarly,the co-inoculation of a mixture of Selenobacteria and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi represents an evolving promising strategy for the bio-fortification of wheat plants to produce selenium-rich flour to supplement human dietary needs.Furthermore,in-depth research is required to assure the effectiveness of biological fertilization procedures in field conditions as well as to explore and increase our understanding pertaining to the underlying main mechanisms and channels of selenium absorption in plants. The focus of this review is to synthesize the recent developments on Se dynamics in soil-plant systems and emerging promising strategies to optimize its levels for crop plants.Recent developments regarding the use of micro-organisms as a biotechnological mean to enhance plant nutrition and crop quality have been objectively elaborated. The study becomes even more pertinent for arid and semi-arid agro-ecosystems owing to the potential role of selenium in providing stress tolerance to crop plants. Moreover, this review synthesizes and summarizes the recent developments on climate change and bioavailability, and the protective role of selenium in crop plants.Misbah Naz Rubab Shabbir Krishan KVerma Anshu Rastogi Vishnu D.Rajput Talha Javed Muhammad Ammar Raza Kainat Asif Muhammad Aamir Iqbal Muhammad Imran Mohammad Sohidul Islam Khalid Rehman Hakeem MehmetFirat Baran Ayman EL Sabagh 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,5:0
Distribution,Etiology,Molecular Genetics and Management Perspectives of Northern Corn Leaf Blight of Maize(Zea mays L.)显示文摘Maize is cultivated extensively throughout the world and has the highest production among cereals. However,Northern corn leaf blight(NCLB)disease caused by Exherohilum turcicum,is the most devastating limiting factor of maize production. The disease causes immense losses to corn yield if it develops prior or during the tasseling and silking stages of crop development. It has a worldwide distribution and its development is favoured by cool to moderate temperatures with high relative humidity. The prevalence of the disease has increased in recent years and new races of the pathogen have been reported worldwide. The fungus E.turcicum is highly variable in nature.Though different management strategies have proved effective to reduce economic losses from NCLB,the development of varieties with resistance to E.turcicum is the most efficient and inexpensive way for disease management.Qualitative resistance for NCLB governed by Ht genes is a race-specific resistance which leads to a higher level of resistance. However, some Ht genes can easily become ineffective under the high pressure of virulent strains of the pathogen.Hence,it is imperative to understand and examine the consistency of the genomic locations of quantitative trait loci for resistance to NCLB in diverse maize populations. The breeding approaches for pyramiding resistant genes against E.turcicum in maize can impart NCLB resistance under high disease pressure environments.Furthermore, the genome editing approaches like CRISPR-cas9 and RNAi can also prove vital for developing NCLB resistant maize cultivars. As such this review delivers emphasis on the importance and current status of the disease, racial spectrum of the pathogen, genetic nature and breeding approaches for resistance and management strategies of the disease in a sustainable manner.M.Ashraf Ahangar Shabir Hussain Wani Zahoor A.Dar Jan Roohi Fayaz Mohiddin Monika Bansal Mukesh Choudhary Sumit K.Aggarwal S.A.Waza Khursheed Ahmad Dar Ayman El Sabagh Celaleddin Barutcular Omer Konuşkan Mohammad Anwar Hossain 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,10:0
Termites Improve the Horizontal Movement of Carbonized Particles:A Step towards Sustainable Utilization of Biochar显示文摘Soil amendments containing carbonized materials increase the soil carbon reservoir, influence plant productivity, and, ultimately, help to clean the environment. There is data on the effect of such additions on soil physicochemical properties or plant growth, but few studies have focused on how these carbonized materials are distributed by termite species in the soil ecosystem. It is the first comprehensive study of the transportation of biochar(BC)by termite species under tropical environmental conditions in Pakistan. The present study was carried out to test the hypothesis that if termite species I)were involved in the distribution of biochar particles II)if yes, then how far these particles were transported during the study period(10 days)and III)check their preference between the enriched BC(EBC)and non-enriched BC.BC was enriched with the cattle slurry after its pyrolysis in the study. The results showed that EBC particles were significantly more widely distributed than non-enriched BC particles, but both types of BC were transported more than 4 cm(ring 4)within 10 days(at the end of the experiment). The current study also revealed that EBC was easily attached to the setae, cuticle, and legs of termites, implying that it could potentially be transported over a greater distance.Furthermore, transportation of EBC over larger distances indicated a potential preference of termite species between the EBC and BC particles.During the study, however, the preference among the termite species was also observed.Under the prevailing study conditions, the Coptotermes heimi and Heteroterme indicola species transported the EBC further than Microtermes obesi and Odontotermes obesus. These findings revealed that transportation preferences were observed among the four termite species. In conclusion, the current study found that termites were involved in the distribution of BC particles, with a preference for EBC and that these have the potential to transport BC particles more than 4 cm within 10 days.Furthermore, two species Coptotermes heimi and Heteroterme indicola may be more suitable candidates for EBC transpiration in Pakistani soils. It was necessary to conduct additional research into the effect of temperature on the transportation process.Mazhar Ali Nasir Masood Hafiz Muhammad Rashad Javeed Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Khalid F.Almutairi Liyun Liu Muhammad Aqeel Sarwar Karthika Rajendran Ayman EL Sabagh 2022Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2022,91,10:0
Characterization of Endophytic Microorganisms of Rice(Oryza sativa L.)Potentials for Blast Disease Biocontrol and Plant Growth Promoting Agents显示文摘One hundred twenty-five endophytic microorganisms were isolated from the roots, stems, and leaves of four prominent rice cultivars growing in temperate regions.Their potential to combat rice blast disease and promote plant growth was investigated. The dual culture tests highlighted the strong antagonistic activity of five fungal(ranging from 89%–70%)and five bacterial(72%–61%)endophytes.Subsequent examination focused on volatile compounds produced by selected isolates to counter the blast pathogen.Among these, the highest chitinase(13.76μg mL−1)and siderophore(56.64%),was exhibited by Aspergillus flavus, and the highest HCN production was shown by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia(36.15μM mL−1).In terms of growth promotion traits,Aspergillus flavus and Enterobacter cloacae excelled in activities viz, phosphorous solubilization, ammonia production, auxin and gibberellic acid production, and nitrogen fixation. The Identity of these endophytes was confirmed through molecular analysis as Trichoderma afroharzianum,Trichoderma harzianum,Penicillium rubens,Aspergillus flavus,Stenotrophomonas rhizophila,Stenotrophomonas maltophilia,Bacillus cereus,Enterobacter cloacae, and Bacillus licheniformis.Under greenhouse conditions, the highest disease control was shown by isolate Bacillus licheniformis and A.flavus with an inhibition of 79%,followed by S.rhizophila(77%)and T.afroharzianum(73%).The overall results of this study showed that Bacillus licheniformis and Stenotrophomonas rhizophila have great potential to be used as bio-stimulant and biocontrol agents to manage rice blast disease.Shugufta Parveen Fayaz A.Mohiddin M.Ashraf Bhat Zahoor Ahmed Baba Fehim Jeelani M.Anwar Bhat Sajad Un Nabi Burhan Hamid Saba Bandey Farhanaz Rasool Zakir Amin Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Muhammad Adnan Ayman El Sabagh 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,11:0
Seed Priming and Foliar Supplementation withβ-aminobutyric Acid Alleviates Drought Stress through Mitigation of Oxidative Stress and Enhancement of Antioxidant Defense in Linseed(Linum usitatissimum L.)显示文摘Drought is one of the critical limitations to agricultural soils and crop plants.Scarcity of water is increasing due to climate change that lead to increasing threats to global food security. Therefore, ecofriendly and cost effective strategies are highly desirable for mitigating drought stress along with sustainable and smart agricultural production. The aim of the study was to mitigate DS using seed priming and exogenous supplementation ofβ-aminobutyric acid(BABA)in linseed(Linum usitatissimum L.).Different doses(0,50,100 and 150μM)of BABA were used for seed priming agent and foliar spraying under three soil moisture levels viz.,25%(SM25),45%(SM45)and 65%(SM65).The response variables of both experiments included different agro-botanical traits and oxidative stress indicators such as melondialdehyde content, free proline accumulation, and antioxidant defense in plants. The linseed plants showed water stress at SM25 that reduced plant height, number of branches per plant, time taken to flower initiation and heading, and root and shoot dry weights.Additionally, the number of capsules and seeds per capsule showed a significant decline at SM25,which led to a drastic reduction in 100-seed weight yield in linseed plants in both experiments. However, seed priming and foliar supplementation with of BABA(50–100μM)significantly improved these morpho-agronomical attributes in linseed plants under DS.The results revealed that the BABA was fully active in linseed plants at SM25.Interestingly,the combination of SM25 with BABA significantly improved the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),ascorbate peroxidase(APX),and peroxidase(POD)activity, which significantly enhanced DS tolerance in linseed plants. These findings might be useful to oil seed breeders and farmers linseed for breeding program in linseed plants as well as sustainable agricultural production of oil seed crop plants.Tauqeer Ahmad Yasir Muhammad Ateeq Allah Wasaya Mubshar Hussain Naeem Sarwar Khuram Mubeen Mudassir Aziz Muhammad Aamir Iqbal Chukwuma COgbaga Ibrahim Al-Ashkar Md Atikur Rahman Ayman El Sabagh 2023Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2023,92,11:0
Oxidative Stress Tolerance Mechanism in Rice under Salinity显示文摘The research was conducted to investigate comparative oxidative damage including probable protective roles of antioxidant and glyoxalase systems in rice(Oryza sativa L.)seedlings under salinity stress.Seedlings of two rice genotypes:Pokkali(tolerant)and BRRI dhan28(sensitive)were subjected to 8 dSm^(−1) salinity stress for seven days in a hydroponic system. We observed significant variation between Pokkali and BRRI dhan28 in phenotypic, biochemical and mole-cular level under salinity stress.Carotenoid content, ion homeostasis, antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate and glutathione redox system and proline accumulation may help Pokkali to develop defense system during salinity stress. However, the activity antioxidant enzymes particularly superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT)and non-chloroplastic peroxidase(POD)were observed significantly higher in Pokkali compared to salt-sensitive BRRI dhan28.Higher glyoxalase(Gly-I)and glyoxalase(Gly-II)activity might have also accompanied Pokkali genotype to reduce potential cytotoxic MG through non-toxic hydroxy acids conversion. However, the efficient antioxidants and glyoxalase system together increased adaptability in Pokkali during salinity stress.Mahmuda Binte Monsur Nasrin Akter Ivy M.Moynul Haque Mirza Hasanuzzaman Ayman EL Sabagh Md.Motiar Rohman 2020Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2020,89,3:0
Sub-Surface Drip Irrigation in Associated with H_(2)O_(2) Improved the Productivity of Maize under Clay-Rich Soil of Adana, Turkey显示文摘Maize being sub-tropical crop is sensitive to water deficit during the early growth stages;particularly clay-rich soil, due to the compaction of the soil.It is well-documented that potential sub-surface drip irrigation(SDI)(Full irrigation;SDIFull(100%field capacity(FC)),Deficit irrigation;SDIDeficit(70%FC))improves water use efficiency, which leads to increased crop productivity;since it has a constraint that SDI excludes soil air around the root-zone during irrigation events, which alter the root function and crop performance.Additionally,in clay-rich soils, the root system of plants generally suffers the limitation of oxygen, particularly the temporal hypoxia, and occasionally from root anoxia;while SDI system accomplishes with the aerating stream of irrigation in the rhizosphere could provide oxygen root environment. The oxygen can be introduced into the irrigation stream of SDI through two ways:the venturi principle,or by using solutions of hydrogen peroxide through the air injection system. Therefore, the application of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2);HP)can mitigate the adverse effect of soil compactness and also lead to improving the growth, yield and yield attributes of maize in clay-rich soil.Considering the burning issue,a field study was conducted in consecutive two seasons of 2017 and 2018;where hybrid maize was cultivated as a second crop,to evaluate the effect of liquid-injection of H_(2)O_(2)(HP)into the irrigation stream of SDI on the performance of maize in a clay-rich soil field of Adana,Turkey. When soil water content decreased in 50%of avail-able water, irrigation was performed. The amount of water applied to reach the soil water content to the field capacity is SDIFull(100%FC)and 70%FC of this water is SDIDeficit(70%FC).In the irrigation program, hydrogen peroxide(HP)was applied at intervals of 7 days on average according to available water with and without HP:SDIFull(100%FC)+0 ppm HP with full SDI irrigation;SDIFull(100%FC)+250 ppm HP with deficit SDI irrigation;SDIDeficit(70%FC)+0 ppm HP,SDIDeficit(70%FC)+250 ppm HP and SDIDeficit(70%FC)+500 ppm HP.Deficit irrigation(SDIDeficit(70%FC))program was started from tasseling stage and continued up to the physiological maturity stage with sub-soil drip irrigation.H_(2)O_(2) was applied 3 times during the growing season. Two years’results revealed that the liquid-injection of H_(2)O_(2) into the irrigation stream of SDI improved the growth and yield-related attributes and grain yield of maize.Based on the obtained results, during the extreme climatic condition in the year 2017,SDIFull(100%FC)+250 ppm HP was more effective than SDIFull(100%FC)+0 ppm HP on all traits for relative to full irrigation. While, during the favourable climatic condition in the 2018 season,SDIFull(100%FC)+250 ppm HP was more effective than full irrigation with SDIFull(100%FC)+0 ppm HP for the grain yield, grains, and SPAD value.Accordingly, the most effective treatment was SDIFull(100%FC)+250 ppm HP,as it gave the highest growth and yield-related attributes and grain yield of maize followed by SDIDeficit(70%FC)+250 ppm HP.Therefore,SDIFull with 250 ppm H_(2)O_(2) using as liquid-injection may be recommended to mitigate the adverse effect of soil compactness particularly water-deficit stress in clay-rich soil for the sustainability of maize production.Alhan Sariyev Celaleddin Barutcular Mert Acar Akbar Hossain Ayman EL Sabagh 2020Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany2020,89,3:0
