| 2 | Climate sensitivities of two versions of FGOALS model to idealized radiative forcing显示文摘Projections of future climate change by climate system models depend on the sensitivities of models to specified greenhouse gases.To reveal and understand the different climate sensitivities of two versions of LASG/IAP climate system model FGOALS-g2 and FGOALS-s2,we investigate the global mean surface air temperature responses to idealized CO2 forcing by using the output of abruptly quadrupling CO2 experiments.The Gregory-style regression method is used to estimate the'radiative forcing'of quadrupled CO2 and equilibrium sensitivity.The model response is separated into a fast-response stage associated with the CO2 forcing during the first 20 years,and a slow-response stage post the first 20 years.The results show that the radiative forcing of CO2 is overestimated due to the positive water-vapor feedback and underestimated due to the fast cloud processes.The rapid response of water vapor in FGOALS-s2 is responsible for the stronger radiative forcing of CO2.The climate sensitivity,defined as the equilibrium temperature change under doubled CO2 forcing,is about 3.7 K in FGOALS-g2 and4.5 K in FGOALS-s2.The larger sensitivity of FGOALS-s2 is due mainly to the weaker negative longwave clear-sky feedback and stronger positive shortwave clear-sky feedback at the fast-response stage,because of the more rapid response of water vapor increase and sea-ice decrease in FGOALS-s2 than in FGOALS-g2.At the slow-response stage,similar to the fast-response stage,net negative clear-sky feedback is weaker in FGOALS-s2.Nevertheless,the total negative feedback is larger in FGOALS-s2 due to a larger negative shortwave cloud feedback that involves a larger response of total cloud fraction and condensed water path increase.The uncertainties of estimated forcing and net feedback mainly come from the shortwave cloud processes. | CHEN XiaoLong ZHOU TianJun GUO Zhun | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,6: | 19 |
| 3 | An improved diagnostic stratocumulus scheme based on estimated inversion strength and its performance in GAMIL2显示文摘Based on satellite data and the estimated inversion strength(EIS) derived by Wood et al.(2006), a feasible and uncomplicated stratocumulus scheme is proposed, referred to as EIS scheme. It improves simulation of cloud radiative forcing(CRF) in the Grid-point Atmospheric Model of IAP/LASG version 2(GAMIL2.0) model. When compared with the original lower troposphere stability(LTS) scheme, the EIS scheme reproduces more reasonable climatology distributions of clouds and CRF. The parameterization partly corrects CRF underestimation at mid and high latitudes and overestimation in the convective region. Such improvements are achieved by neglecting the effect of free-tropospheric stratification changes that follow a cooler moist adiabat at middle and high latitude, thereby improving simulated cloudiness. The EIS scheme also improves simulation of the CRF interannual variability. The positive net CRF and negative stratiform anomaly in the East Asian and western North Pacific monsoon regions(EAWNPMR) are well simulated. The EIS scheme is more sensitive to sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTA) than the LTS. Therefore, under the effect of a warmer SSTA in the EAWNPMR, the EIS generates a stronger negative stratiform response, which reduces radiative heating in the low and mid troposphere, in turn producing strong subsidence and negative anomalies of both moisture and cloudiness. Consequent decreases in cloud reflection and shading effects ultimately improve simulation of incoming surface shortwave radiative fluxes and CRF. | 4 | Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks of a New Coupled Model CAMS-CSM to Idealized CO_2 Forcing: A Comparison with CMIP5 Models显示文摘Climate sensitivity and feedbacks are basic and important metrics to a climate system. They determine how large surface air temperature will increase under CO_2 forcing ultimately, which is essential for carbon reduction policies to achieve a specific warming target. In this study, these metrics are analyzed in a climate system model newly developed by the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences(CAMS-CSM) and compared with multi-model results from the Coupled Model Comparison Project phase 5(CMIP5). Based on two idealized CO_2 forcing scenarios, i.e.,abruptly quadrupled CO_2 and CO_2 increasing 1% per year, the equilibrium climate sensitivity(ECS) and transient climate response(TCR) in CAMS-CSM are estimated to be about 2.27 and 1.88 K, respectively. The ECS is near the lower bound of CMIP5 models whereas the TCR is closer to the multi-model ensemble mean(MME) of CMIP5 due to compensation of a relatively low ocean heat uptake(OHU) efficiency. The low ECS is caused by an unusually negative climate feedback in CAMS-CSM, which is attributed to cloud shortwave feedback(λSWCL) over the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean.The CMIP5 ensemble shows that more negative λSWCL is related to larger increase in low-level(925–700 hPa)cloud over the tropical Indo-Pacific under warming, which can explain about 90% of λSWCL in CAMS-CSM. Static stability of planetary boundary layer in the pre-industrial simulation is a critical factor controlling the low-cloud response and λSWCL across the CMIP5 models and CAMS-CSM. Evidently, weak stability in CAMS-CSM favors lowcloud formation under warming due to increased low-level convergence and relative humidity, with the help of enhanced evaporation from the warming tropical Pacific. Consequently, cloud liquid water increases, amplifying cloud albedo, and eventually contributing to the unusually negative λSWCL and low ECS in CAMS-CSM. | 5 | The FGOALS climate system model as a modeling tool for supporting climate sciences:An overview显示文摘Climate system models are useful tools for understanding the interactions among the components of the climate system and predicting/projecting future climate change. The development of climate models has been a central focus of the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(LASG/IAP) since the establishment of the laboratory in 1985. In China, many pioneering component models and fully coupled models of the climate system have been developed by LASG/IAP. The fully coupled climate system developed in the recent decade is named FGOALS(Flexible Global Ocean-Atmosphere-Land System Model). In this paper, an application-oriented review of the LASG/IAP FGOALS model is presented. The improved model performances are demonstrated in the context of cloud-radiation processes, Asian monsoon, ENSO phenomena, Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC) and sea ice. The FGOALS model has contributed to both CMIP5(Coupled Model Intercomparison Project-phase 5) and IPCC(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) AR5(the Fifth Assessment Report). The release of FGOALS data has supported the publication of nearly 500 papers around the world. The results of FGOALS are cited ~106 times in the IPCC WG1(Working Group 1) AR5. In addition to the traditional long-term simulations and projections, near-term decadal climate prediction is a new set of CMIP experiment, progress of LAGS/IAP in the development of nearterm decadal prediction system is reviewed. The FGOALS model has supported many Chinese national-level research projects and contributed to the national climate change assessment report. | 6 | Seasonal Variation and Physical Properties of the Cloud System over Southeastern China Derived from Cloud Sat Products显示文摘Based on the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP) and Climate Prediction Center(CPC) Merged Analysis of Precipitation(CMAP) data and Cloud Sat products, the seasonal variations of the cloud properties, vertical occurrence frequency, and ice water content of clouds over southeastern China were investigated in this study. In the Cloud Sat data, a significant alternation in high or low cloud patterns was observed from winter to summer over southeastern China. It was found that the East Asian Summer Monsoon(EASM) circulation and its transport of moisture leads to a conditional instability, which benefits the local upward motion in summer, and thereby results in an increased amount of high cloud. The deep convective cloud centers were found to coincide well with the northward march of the EASM, while cirrus lagged slightly behind the convection center and coincided well with the outflow and meridional wind divergence of the EASM. Analysis of the radiative heating rates revealed that both the plentiful summer moisture and higher clouds are effective in destabilizing the atmosphere. Moreover, clouds heat the mid-troposphere and the cloud radiative heating is balanced by adiabatic cooling through upward motion, which causes meridional wind by the Sverdrup balance. | 8 | The Asymmetric Effects of El Ni?o and La Ni?a on the East Asian Winter Monsoon and Their Simulation by CMIP5 Atmospheric Models显示文摘El Ni?o–Southern Oscillation(ENSO) events significantly affect the year-by-year variations of the East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM). However, the effect of La Ni?a events on the EAWM is not a mirror image of that of El Ni?o events. Although the EAWM becomes generally weaker during El Ni?o events and stronger during La Ni?a winters, the enhanced precipitation over the southeastern China and warmer surface air temperature along the East Asian coastline during El Ni?o years are more significant. These asymmetric effects are caused by the asymmetric longitudinal positions of the western North Pacific(WNP) anticyclone during El Ni?o events and the WNP cyclone during La Ni?a events; specifically, the center of the WNP cyclone during La Ni?a events is westward-shifted relative to its El Ni?o counterpart. This central-position shift results from the longitudinal shift of remote El Ni?o and La Ni?a anomalous heating, and asymmetry in the amplitude of local sea surface temperature anomalies over the WNP.However, such asymmetric effects of ENSO on the EAWM are barely reproduced by the atmospheric models of Phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5), although the spatial patterns of anomalous circulations are reasonably reproduced. The major limitation of the CMIP5 models is an overestimation of the anomalous WNP anticyclone/cyclone, which leads to stronger EAWM rainfall responses. | 9 | Seasonal variation analysis of atmospheric CH_4,N_2O and CO_2 in Tianjin offshore area显示文摘The concentrations of CH4, N2O and CO2 at the sea level were observed from November 2007 to August 2008 in order to study the greenhouse gases in the Tianjin offshore area of Bohai Sea. CH4 concentrations varied from 1.87 to 2.61 ppm with the highest value appearing in summer and the lowest in winter. The concentration range of N2O was 319.3 to 347.7 ppb, with the maximal value appearing in winter. CO2 was higher in the heating season than in non-heating season in this area. Concentrations of the three greenhouse gases in the study area exceeded the 2005 global background values. Backward trajectory model was used to analyze the sources. All three gases were influenced evidently by continental sources in the inshore area during the sampling periods. Every gas was compared with each other by correlation analysis, showing that the correlation of CO2 and N2O was more significant than to CH4 and their relationship with meteorological factors was consistent. | 10 | Responses of Cloud-Radiative Forcing to Strong El Nino Events over the Western Pacific Warm Pool as Simulated by CAMS-CSM显示文摘Cloud-radiative forcing(CRF)at the top of the atmosphere(TOA)over the western Pacific warm pool(WP)shows unique characteristics in response to El Nino events.In this region,the responses of CRF to El Nino events have been a useful metric for evaluating climate models.Satellite data are used to analyze the CRF anomalies to El Nino events simulated by the new and old versions of the Climate System Model of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences(CAMS-CSM),which has participated in the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project(AMIP).Here,simulations for super El Nino years,El Nino years,and normal years are compared with observations.The results show that the mean values of both longwave CRF(LWCRF)and shortwave CRF(SWCRF)in CAMS-CSM are weaker than the observations for each category of El Nino events.Compared with the old version of CAMS-CSM,the decrease in LWCRF during El Nino events is well simulated by the new version of CAMS-CSM.However,both new and old models cannot reproduce the anomalous SWCRF in El Nino events.The biases in the CRF response to El Nino events are attributed to the biases in the cloud vertical structure because of a weaker crash of the Walker circulation in CAMS-CSM.Due to the modification of the conversion rate from cloud droplets to raindrops in the cumulus convection scheme,the new version of CAMS-CSM has better CRF skills in normal years,but biases in El Nino events still exist in the new version.Improving the response of the Walker circulation to El Nino events is key to higher skills in simulating the cloud radiative responses. | Baichao ZHANG Zhun GUO Xiaolong CHEN Tianjun ZHOU Xinyao RONG Jian LI | 2020 | Journal of Meteorological Research2020,34,3: | 2 |

| 13 | Surface modification of mesoporous silica nanoparticle with 4-triethoxysilylaniline to enhance seawater desalination properties of thin-film nanocomposite reverse osmosis membranes显示文摘Mesoporous silica nanoparticles(MSN),with higher water permeability than NaA zeolite,were used to fabricate thin-film nanocomposite(TFN)reverse osmosis(RO)membranes.However,only aminoalkyl-modified MSN and low-pressure(less than 2.1 MPa)RO membrane were investigated.In this study,aminophenyl-modified MSN(AMSN)were synthesized and used to fabricate high-pressure(5.52 MPa)RO membranes.With the increasing of AMSN dosage,the crosslinking degree of the aromatic polyamide decreased,while the hydrophilicity of the membranes increased.The membrane morphology was maintained to show a ridge-and-valley structure,with only a slight increase in membrane surface roughness.At the optimum conditions(AMSN dosage of 0.25 g/L),when compared with the pure polyamide RO membrane,the water flux of the TFN RO membrane(55.67 L/m^2/h)was increased by about 21.6%,while NaCl rejection(98.97%)was slightly decreased by only 0.29%.However,the water flux of the membranes was much lower than expected.We considered that the enhancement of RO membrane permeability is attributed to the reduction of the effective thickness of the PA layer. | Jian Wang Qun Wang Xueli Gao Xinxia Tian Yangyang Wei Zhen Cao Chungang Guo Huifeng Zhang Zhun Ma Yushan Zhang | 2020 | Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering2020,14,1: | 1 |

| 15 | Efficacy and safety of remimazolam-based sedation for intensive care unit patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy:a cohort study显示文摘BACKGROUND:Remimazolam is a novel ultra-short-acting sedative,but its safety and adverse events(AEs)in high-risk patients in the intensive care unit(ICU)setting remain unknown.METHODS:This was a single-center,retrospective study that compared remimazolam to propofol and midazolam in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.The primary outcome was the incidence of treatment-related AEs.The secondary outcomes were the time to extubation,the length of ICU stay,and the average cost of sedative per case.RESULTS:Of the 88 patients analyzed,47 were treated with remimazolam(mean dose,7.90±4.84mg),and 41 were treated with propofol(21.19±17.98 mg)or midazolam(3.08±2.17 mg).There was no statistically significant difference in the average duration of the endoscopic procedure(35.89±13.37 min vs.44.51±21.68 min,P=0.133)or the time to extubation(15.00±9.75 h vs.20.59±18.71 h,P=0.211)in the remimazolam group(group I)compared to the propofol or midazolam group(group II).ICU stays(5.40±2.93 d vs.4.63±3.31 d,P=0.072)and treatment-related AEs(48.61%vs.51.38%,P=0.056)were similar between groups.The average cost of sedative per case was significantly lower in the group I than in the group II(RMB 16.07±10.58 yuan vs.RMB 24.37±15.46 yuan,P=0.016).CONCLUSION:Remimazolam-based sedation was noninferior to the classic sedatives and had lower average cost per case,indicating that it may be used as a promising sedative for high-risk patients during endoscopic procedures in the ICU setting. | Yuan-rui Zhao Ke-sheng Huang Guo Hou Lan Yao Li-ping Lu Song Xu Ying-tao Lian Zhun Yao Zhui Yu | 2023 | World Journal of Emergency Medicine2023,14,1: | 0 |
