| 1 | Probit Analysis of Carbamate-Pesticide-Toxicity at Soil-Water Interface to N_2-Fixing Cyanobacterium Cylindrospermum sp.显示文摘Toxicity-data of two carbamate insecticides,carbaryl and carbofuran,and three fungicides,ziram,zineb and mancozeb with rice-field N2-fixing cyanobacterium Cylindrospermum sp.,obtained by in vitro growth and at soil-water interface,were analyzed by the probit method. Growth enhancing concentration,no-observed effective concentration,minimum inhibitory concentration,the highest permissive concentration and lethal concentration100(LC100) were determined experimentally. The LC50 values of carbaryl,carbofuran,ziram,zineb and mancozeb in N2-fixing liquid medium were 56.2,588.8,0.07,4.2 and 3.4 μg/m L,respectively,whereas the corresponding LC100 values were 100.0,1500.0,0.17,25.0 and 9.0 μg/m L,respectively. The LC50 values of these pesticides in succession in N2-fixing agar medium were 44.7,239.9,0.07,1.8 and 2.3 μg/m L,respectively,whereas the corresponding LC100 values were 100.0,600.0,0.17,10.0 and 7.0 μg/m L,respectively. Similar results with nitrate supplemented liquid and agar media indicated that nitrate supplementation had toxicity reducing effect. The LC50 and LC100 values of toxicity in the N2-fixing liquid medium at soil-water interface were 91.2 and 200.0 μg/m L for carbaryl,2 317 and 6 000 μg/m L for carbofuran,0.15 and 0.50 μg/m L for ziram,16.4 and 50.0 μg/m L for zineb,and 7.2 and 25.0 μg/m L for mancozeb,respectively. Each LC100 value at soilwater interface with a pesticide was significantly higher than its corresponding LC100 value at liquid/agar media. | 2 | 1,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea enhances the inhibitory effect of Resveratrol on 5-fluorouracil sensitive/resistant colon cancer cells显示文摘AIM:To study the mechanism of 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)resistance in colon cancer cells and to develop strategies for overcoming such resistance by combination treatment.METHODS:We established and characterized a 5-FU resistance(5-FU-R)cell line derived from continuous exposure(25μmol/L)to 5-FU for 20 wk in 5-FU sensitive HCT-116 cells.The proliferation and expression of different representative apoptosis and anti-apoptosis markers in 5-FU sensitive and 5-FU resistance cells were measured by the MTT assay and by Western blotting,respectively,after treatment with Resveratrol(Res)and/or 1,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea(BCNU).Apoptosis and cell cycle arrest was measured by 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole hydrochloride staining and fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis,respectively.The extent of DNA damage was measured by the Comet assay.We measured the visible changes in the DNA damage/repair cascade by Western blotting.RESULTS:The widely used chemotherapeutic agents BCNU and Res decreased the growth of 5-FU sensitive HCT-116 cells in a dose dependent manner.Combined application of BCNU and Res caused more apoptosis in5-FU sensitive cells in comparison to individual treatment.In addition,the combined application of BCNU and Res caused a significant decrease of major DNA base excision repair components in 5-FU sensitive cells.We established a 5-FU resistance cell line(5-FU-R)from 5-FU-sensitive HCT-116(mismatch repair deficient)cells that was not resistant to other chemotherapeutic agents(e.g.,BCNU,Res)except 5-FU.The 5-FU resistance of 5-FU-R cells was assessed by exposure to increasing concentrations of 5-FU followed by the MTT assay.There was no significant cell death noted in5-FU-R cells in comparison to 5-FU sensitive cells after5-FU treatment.This resistant cell line overexpressed anti-apoptotic[e.g.,AKT,nuclear factorκB,FLICE-like inhibitory protein),DNA repair(e.g.,DNA polymerase beta(POL-β),DNA polymerase eta(POLH),protein Flap endonuclease 1(FEN1),DNA damage-binding protein 2(DDB2)]and 5-FU-resistance proteins(thymidylate synthase)but under expressed pro-apoptotic proteins(e.g.,DAB2,CK1)in comparison to the parental cells.Increased genotoxicity and apoptosis were observed in resistant cells after combined application of BCNU and Res in comparison to untreated or parental cells.BCNU increased the sensitivity to Res of 5-FU resistant cells compared with parental cells.Fifty percent cell death were noted in parental cells when 18μmol/L of Res was associated with fixed concentration(20μmol/L)of BCNU,but a much lower concentration of Res(8μmol/L)was needed to achieve the same effect in 5-FU resistant cells.Interestingly,increased levels of adenomatous polyposis coli and decreased levels POL-β,POLH,FEN1 and DDB2 were noted after the same combined treatment in resistant cells.CONCLUSION:BCNU combined with Res exerts a synergistic effect that may prove useful for the treatment of colon cancer and to overcome drug resistance. | Dipon Das Ranjan Preet Purusottam Mohapatra Shakti Ranjan Satapathy Chanakya Nath Kundu | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,42: | 4 |
| 3 | Antibacterial efficacy of five medicinal plants against multidrug-resistant enteropathogenic bacteria infecting under-5 hospitalized children显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To evaluate in vitro antibacterial effectiveness of five medicinal plants used by an Indian aborigine, against 8 multidrug-resistant(MDR) enteropathogenic bacteria isolated from clinical samples of under-5 hospitalized children.METHODS: Antibiotic sensitivity patterns of eight clinically isolated strains of enteropathogenic bacteria, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella paratyphi, S. typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, S. sonnei and Vibrio cholerae were assessed by disc-diffusion method. Antibacterial activities of 8 solvent-extracts of leaves and bark of five medicinal plants were monitored by the agar-well diffusion method. The microbroth dilution method was used to assess minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC). Qualitative phytochemical analyses of active plant extracts were carried out.RESULTS: Ethanol, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Holarrhena antidysenterica leaf tissue were most effective against 8 MDR pathogens in vitro. Similarly, acetone, ethanol and methanol extracts of Terminalia alata leaf tissue; chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of Terminalia arjuna leaf tissue and ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol extracts of Paederia foetida leaf tissue were most effective in inhibiting in vitro growth of the 8 MDR enteropathogens. Ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of H. antidysenterica bark tissue; acetone, ethanol and methanol extracts of T. alata bark tissue and acetone, ethanol and methanol extracts of T. arjuna bark tissue were most effective in controlling enteropathogen growth. The minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration values of the 3 most antimicrobial leaf and bark extracts from the fi ve plants were in the range of 1.56 to 50 mg/m L.CONCLUSION: These 5 plants exhibited in vitro control over a cohort of 8 enteropathogenic bacterial strains isolated from clinical samples. | Shakti Rath Rabindra N.Padhy | 2015 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2015,13,1: | 3 |
| 4 | Prediction of the residual strength of clay using functional networks显示文摘Landslides are common natural hazards occurring in most parts of the world and have considerable adverse economic effects. Residual shear strength of clay is one of the most important factors in the determination of stability of slopes or landslides. This effect is more pronounced in sensitive clays which show large changes in shear strength from peak to residual states. This study analyses the prediction of the residual strength of clay based on a new prediction model, functional networks(FN) using data available in the literature. The performance of FN was compared with support vector machine(SVM) and artificial neural network(ANN) based on statistical parameters like correlation coefficient(R), Nash–Sutcliff coefficient of efficiency(E), absolute average error(AAE), maximum average error(MAE) and root mean square error(RMSE). Based on R and E parameters, FN is found to be a better prediction tool than ANN for the given data. However, the R and E values for FN are less than SVM. A prediction equation is presented that can be used by practicing geotechnical engineers. | 5 | Feasibility of Grid-connected Solar-wind Hybrid System with Electric Vehicle Charging Station显示文摘Recently,renewable power generation and electric vehicles(EVs)have been attracting more and more attention in smart grid.This paper presents a grid-connected solar-wind hybrid system to supply the electrical load demand of a small shopping complex located in a university campus in India.Further,an EV charging station is incorporated in the system.Economic analysis is performed for the proposed setup to satisfy the charging demand of EVs as well as the electrical load demand of the shopping complex.The proposed system is designed by considering the cost of the purchased energy,which is sold to the utility grid,while the power exchange is ensured between the utility grid and other components of the system.The sizing of the component is performed to obtain the least levelized cost of electricity(LCOE)while minimizing the loss of power supply probability(LPSP)by using recent optimization techniques.The results demonstrate that the LCOE and LPSP for the proposed system are measured at 0.038$/k Wh and0.19%with a renewable fraction of 0.87,respectively.It is determined that a cost-effective and reliable system can be designed by the proper management of renewable power generation and load demands.The proposed system may be helpful in reducing the reliance on the over-burdened grid,particularly in developing countries. | Shakti Singh Prachi Chauhan Nirbhow Jap Singh | 2021 | Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2021,9,2: | 2 |
| 6 | Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults:A distinct but heterogeneous clinical entity显示文摘Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults(LADA) accounts for 2-12 of all cases of diabetes.Patients are typically diagnosed after 35 years of age and are often misdiagnosed as type Ⅱ Diabetes Mellitus(DM).Glycemic control is initially achieved with sulfonylureas but patients eventually become insulin dependent more rapidly than with type Ⅱ DM patients.Although they have a type Ⅱ DM phenotype,patients have circulating beta(β) cell autoantibodies,a hallmark of type Ⅰ DM.Alternative terms that have been used to describe this condition include type 1.5 diabetes,latent type Ⅰ diabetes,slowly progressive Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus,or youth onset diabetes of maturity.With regards to its autoimmune basis and rapid requirement for insulin,it has been suggested that LADA is a slowly progressive form of type Ⅰ DM.However,recent work has revealed genetic and immunological differences between LADA and type Ⅰ DM.The heterogeneity of LADA has also led to the proposal of criteria for its diagnosis by the Immunology of Diabetes Society.Although many workers have advocated a clinically oriented approach for screening of LADA,there are no universally accepted criteria for autoantibody testing in adult onset diabetes.Following recent advances in immunomodulatory therapies in type Ⅰ DM,the same strategy is being explored in LADA.This review deals with the contribution of the genetic,immunological and metabolic components involved in the pathophysiology of LADA and recent approaches in screening of this distinct but heterogeneous clinical entity. | Bimota Nambam Shakti Aggarwal Anju Jain | 2010 | World Journal of Diabetes2010,1,4: | 2 |

| 8 | Identification of strategy parameters for particle swarm optimizer through Taguchi method显示文摘Particle swarm optimization (PSO), like other evolutionary algorithms is a population-based stochastic algorithm inspired from the metaphor of social interaction in birds, insects, wasps, etc. It has been used for finding promising solutions in complex search space through the interaction of particles in a swarm. It is a well recognized fact that the performance of evolu- tionary algorithms to a great extent depends on the choice of appropriate strategy/operating parameters like population size, crossover rate, mutation rate, crossover operator, etc. Generally, these parameters are selected through hit and trial process, which is very unsystematic and requires rigorous experimentation. This paper proposes a systematic based on Taguchi method reasoning scheme for rapidly identifying the strategy parameters for the PSO algorithm. The Taguchi method is a robust design approach using fractional factorial design to study a large number of parameters with small number of experiments. | 17 | Bronchodilatory and mast cell stabilising activity of Cressa cretica L.:Evaluation through in vivo and in vitro experimental models显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the effect of ethylacetate fraction(Fr-Et) and methanolic fraction(FrMe) obtained from Cressa cretica L.(C.crelica) L on experimental models for bronchodilatory activity and mast cell stabilising activity.Methods:The effect of Fr-Et and Fr-Me were studied on acetylcholine and histamine aerosol-induced broncospasm using guinea pigs as experimental animals.Also,the effects of these fractions were evaluated on the isolated guinea pig tracheal preparations.Besides this mast cell degranulation effect was assessed using egg albumin and compound 48/80 on rat peritoneal mast cells.Results:Significant increase in nreconvulsion time was observed due to pretrealment with the fractions when guinea pigs were exposed to histamine and acetylcholine aerosol.Fr-Et and Fr-Me significantly increased the preconvulsion in a dose depended manner that suggestive of bronchodilating activity.Fr-Et and Fr-Me exhibited a significant concentration dependant relaxant effect on guinea pig trachea pre-contracted with CCh,K^+ and histamine.The results revealed that Fr-Et to be more potent than Fr-Me in relaxing histamine and K^+ and calcium induced contraction than CCh induced conlractions.Studies on the fractions in protecting mast cell degranulation,which were elicited by the egg albumin as well as synthetic compound 48/80 revealed both the fractions significantly protect the mast cell degranulation,which release mediators such as histamine and proinflammatory cytokines through various stimuli in a dose depended manner.Conclusions:Thus our study established the bronchodilator activity,and mast cell stabilizing activity which are important mediators that provoke or sustain in asthma. | Priyashree Sunita S Jha Shakti Prasad Pattanayak | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2012,5,3: | 1 |

| 20 | Growth, Metabolism and Yield of Rice Cultivated in Soils Amended with Fly Ash and Cyanobacteria and Metal Loads in Plant Parts显示文摘Soil amendment with fly ash(FA) and combined supplementation with N_2-fixing cyanobacteria masses as biofertilizer were done in field experiments with rice. Amendments with FA levels, 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0 and 10.0 kg/m^2, caused increase in growth and yield of rice up to 8.0 kg/m^2, monitored with several parameters. Pigment contents and enzyme activities of leaves were enhanced by FA, with the maximum level of FA at 10.0 kg/m^2. Protein content of rice seeds was the highest in plants grown at FA level 4.0 kg/m^2. Basic soil properties, p H value, percentage of silt, percentage of clay, water-holding capacity, electrical conductivity, cation exchange capacity, and organic carbon content increased due to the FA amendment. Parallel supplementation of FA amended plots with 1.0 kg/m^2 N_2-fixing cyanobacteria mass caused further significant increments of the most soil properties, and rice growth and yield parameters. 1000-grain weight of rice plants grown at FA level 4.0 kg/m^2 along with cyanobacteria supplementation was the maximum. Cyanobacteria supplementation caused increase of important basic properties of soil including the total N-content. Estimations of elemental content in soils and plant parts(root and seed) were done by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Accumulations of K, P, Fe and several plant micronutrients(Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Cu) and toxic elements(Pb, Cr and Cd) increased in soils and plant parts as a function of the FA gradation, but Na content remained almost unchanged in soils and seeds. Supplementation of cyanobacteria had ameliorating effect on toxic metal contents of soils and plant parts.
