| 1 | TGR5 expression in benign, preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions of Barrett's esophagus: Case series and findings显示文摘AIM To examined the bile acid receptor TGR5 expression in squamous mucosa, Barrett's mucosa, dysplasia and esophageal adenocarcinoma(EA). METHODS Slides were stained with TGR5 antibody. The staining intensity was scored as 1+, 2+ and 3+. The extent of staining(percentage of cells staining) was scored as follows: 1+, 1%-10%, 2+, 11%-50%, 3+, 51%-100%. A combined score of intensity and extent was calculated and categorized as negative, weak, moderate and strong staining. TGR5 m RNA was measured by real time PCR.RESULTS We found that levels of TGR5 mR NA were significantly increased in Barrett's dysplastic cell line CP-D and EA cell line SK-GT-4, when compared with Barrett's cell line CP-A. Moderate to strong TGR5 staining was significantly higher in high-grade dysplasia and EA cases than in Barrett's esophagus(BE) or in low-grade dysplasia. Moderate to strong staining was slightly higher in low-grade dysplasia than in BE mucosa, but there is no statistical significance. TGR5 staining had no significant difference between high-grade dysplasia and EA. In addition, TGR5 staining intensity was not associated with the clinical stage, the pathological stage and the status of lymph node metastasis.CONCLUSION We conclude that TGR5 immunostaining was much stronger in high-grade dysplasia and EA than in BE mucosa or low-grade dysplasia and that its staining intensity was not associated with the clinical stage, the pathological stage and the status of lymph node metastasis. | 10 | Protection of Viola odorata L.against Neurodegenerative Diseases:Potential of the Extract and Major Phytoconstituents显示文摘Background:Neurodegenerative diseases cause cognitive impairment owing to neuronal death and deterioration.Only a few brain-protecting chemical investigations yielded neuroprotective medications.Viola odoata L.is a traditional medicinal herb that has lately been shown to have strong pharmacological effectiveness against major neurological illnesses with fewer adverse effects.Objective:The objective of the current review is to provide a thorough overview of the key biologically active components and extract of Viola odorata L.in their capacity to safeguard nerve cells.Methods:Science Direct,PubMed,Springer Nature,and Google Scholar were scoured for relevant articles using the terms“Viola odorata L.”,and in the heading and abstract or main text,“neuroprotective activity”,“neurode-generative disease”,“pharmacological potential”,and“therapeutic activity”along with“extract”or“phytocon-stituents”.Neuroprotective activity of Viola odorata L.extract or phytoconstituents were used to classify and investigate the articles that passed the screening process.Results:A total of one hundred twenty one papers were reviewed based on the collected data.The following topics have been elaborated upon in the text:pathological factors of neurodegenerative diseases;role of medic-inal plants in neurodegenerative diseases;Viola odorata L.taxonomy,pharmacological activities,toxicity and adverse effect;neuroprotective activity of extract and various active components of Viola odorata L.The primary phytocomponents of Viola odorata L.were discovered to be anthocyanins,flavonoids,melatonin,salicylic acid,cumarins and various alkaloids,which are primarily responsible for its neuroprotective action.These natural plant compounds can boost antioxidant levels,reduce harmful oxidants,alleviate nerve pain,decrease the pro-duction of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6,IL-1β,and TNF-α��,lower the total amount of nitrite produced,and trigger various neuroprotective mechanisms in the nervous system.It has been also concluded in several in-vestigations that Viola odorata L.extract and some of its major molecular components can protect against toxic affronts,either directly through neuroprotective mechanisms or indirectly through antioxidant properties.Conclusion:Despite the need for further research,the presence of bioactive components in Viola odarata L.that hold the potential to become effective neuroprotective therapeutic agents shows its potential use in treating neurodegenerative diseases characterized by neuro-inflammation and neurotransmitter deficiency. | Sunny Dhiman Shivali Singla Inder Kumar Priyankul Palia Pankaj Kumar Sachin Goyal | 2023 | Clinical Complementary Medicine and Pharmacology2023,3,3: | 0 |
| 11 | Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Through Education:A Vital Element for the Peace Process in the Gulf显示文摘While the fall of Raqqa signalled the steady decline and“defeat”of the Islamic State(IS),it did not guarantee the end of its ideology of violent extremism.The possibility of the organisation reinventing itself in different and perhaps more lethal ways is very high.States,therefore,must adopt measures that are based on holistic,multi-stakeholder approaches rather than on military and securitised responses to counter and ultimately prevent the spread of violent extremist ideology.The countries of the Gulf have the advantage of a“youth bulge,”with almost half its population under the age of 30 years.This“youth bulge”is however a double-edged sword.This large pool of human capital could be a demographic dividend,if harnessed intelligently,while conversely it could prove to be a demographic disaster if timely and plausible solutions to the various issues faced are not provided.This paper will explore ways in which preventing and countering violent extremism(P/CVE)through education could be achieved by including a variety of stakeholders from faith based organisations,the corporate sector,media and academia in the formulation of appropriate educational responses which take into account issues like culture,identity and religiosity.These re-education programmes should form an integral part of P/CVE policies,thereby providing the much needed psycho-social angle to an otherwise hard security-driven discourse.It is against this rationale that this paper makes a case for P/CVE through education,encompassing the formal,informal and non-formal levels,as one of the possible means for promoting and fostering a peace process in the Gulf. | Shivali Lawale | 2020 | Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies2020,14,1: | 0 |
| 12 | Ethnobotanical database based screening and identification of potential plant species with antiplasmodial activity against chloroquine-sensitive(3D7) strain of Plasmodium falciparum显示文摘Objective: To evaluate the antiplasmodial activity of aqueous-methanolic plant extracts of nine plant species selected, based on ethnobotanical data. Methods: Based on ethnobotanical database, the selected plants were tested for their antiplasmodial activity against chloroquinesensitive(3 D7) strain of Plasmodium falciparum. Qualitative tests and high performance thin layer chromatography analysis were carried out to explore the phytocomponents present in the plant extracts. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl antioxidant activity was also determined to check the antioxidant activity of the plant extracts. Results: Moringa oleifera(IC_(50): 3.906 μg/mL),Acalypha indica(IC_(50): 3.906 μg/mL), Hyptis suaveolens(IC_(50): 3.906 μg/mL), Mangifera indica(IC_(50): 4.150 μg/mL) and Averrhoa bilimbi(IC_(50): 4.881 μg/mL) showed very good antiplasmodial activity. Conclusions: Crude extracts of Mangifera indica and Hyptis suaveolens demonstrated the most efficacious antimalarial activity. A bioassay-guided fractionation of these extracts to identify the lead compound is proved to be useful.
