Body Mass Index and Body Fat Percentage in Assessment of Obesity Prevalence in Saudi Adults显示文摘Objective To assess the obesity prevalence in Saudi adults according to the international standards of body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BF%). Methods Five hundred and thirty healthy Saudi adults aged 18-72 years (mean 36.91±15.22 years) were enrolled in this study. Their body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impendence analysis with a commercially available body composition analyzer. Standard BMI and BF% values were used to define obesity. Results The prevalence of underweight, normal underweight, overweight and obesity in Saudi adults according to the BMI criteria (<18.5 kg/m 2 , 18.5-24.4 kg/m 2 , 25-29.9 kg/m 2 , 30 kg/m 2 and above, respectively) was 2.5%, 30.2%, 33.6%, and 33.8%, respectively, whereas the obesity prevalence was 60% (n=318) in Saudi adults according to the BF% criteria (25% for males and 30% for females), which was significantly higher than that according to BMI criteria. However, it was 50.6% (n=268) when the BMI cutoff point was 27.5 kg/m 2 , proposed by WHO for the Asian population. Kappa analysis showed that the obesity prevalence defined by BMI and BF% was higher in females than in males (k=0.530 vs k=0.418, P<0.0001). The sensitivity and specificity of BMI (30 kg/m 2 and 27.5 kg/m 2 ) were 54.1% and 96.7% and 76.4% and 88.2%, respectively, for obesity. A lower BMI cutoff point (26.60 kg/m 2 ) was proposed in this study, which gave the maximum sensitivity (84.3%) and specificity (85.4%), with a moderate kappa agreement (k=0.686). Moreover, the obesity prevalence at this cutoff point (56.4%) was significantly higher than that recommended by WHO. Conclusion The specificity of BMI for obesity is high and its sensitivity is low in both sexes. Its sensitivity can be increased by changing BMI cutoff to a lower value. The choice of BF% reference is of great influence for the assessment of obesity prevalence according to the BMI. | Syed Shahid HABIB | 2013 | Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2013,26,2: | 5

Ultra-wideband Frequency Selective Surface for Communication Applications显示文摘A low-profile ultra-wideband(UWB)band-stop frequency selective surface(FSS)is designed for S-,C-,X-and Ku-bands communication applications. The FSS is constructed by using square and circular loop elements printed on the top and bottom sides of the RO3210 substrate. The FSS has been designed to reduce the electromagnetic interference(EMI)as well as to mitigate the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body caused by different radio devices. The dimension and size of the UWB FSS have been reduced to 0.12λ×0.12λand 90%,respectively,as compared to the reported literature. The other advantages of the proposed FSS are that it is low profile,it has a simplified geometry and it ensures better angular and polarization stability of up to 85◦.The-10 and-20 dB bandwidths of the proposed FSS are 146%(2.0-13.0 GHz)and 80%(4.87-11.42 GHz),respectively.Theoretical results have been obtained using ANSYS HFSS and verified through measured results. | Shahid Habib Ghaffer Iqbal Kiani Muhammad Fasih Uddin Butt Syed Muzahir Abbas Abdulah Jeza Aljohani Soon Xin Ng | 2022 | Computers, Materials & Continua2022,,3: | 0
SER estimation method for 56 GBaud PAM-4 transmission system显示文摘In this Letter, we have proposed a generalized Gaussian probability density function(GGPDF)-based method to estimate the symbol error ratio(SER) for pulse amplitude modulation(PAM-4) in an intensity modulation/direct detection(IM/DD) system. Furthermore, a closed form expression of SERGGDfor PAM-4 has been derived. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated through simulation as well as experimental work. The fitting of probability density functions of the received signal is applied via GGPDF and shape parameters P1 and P2 associated with different PAM-4 levels are determined. The optimum single value of shape parameter P is then calculated to estimate the SER. The mathematical relationship of P with different received optical powers and receiver bandwidths has been determined and verified. The proposed method is a fast and accurate method to estimate SER of a PAM-4 system, which is more reliable and in agreement with the error counting method. | Aadil Raza Kangping Zhong Salman Ghafoor Saeed Iqbal Muhammad Adeel Shahid Habib Muhammad Fasih Uddin Butt Chao Lu | 2018 | Chinese Optics Letters2018,16,4: | 0

MicroRNAs modulation in lung cancer: exploring dual mechanisms and clinical prospects显示文摘The global incidence of lung cancer is marked by a considerably elevated mortality rate.MicroRNAs(miRNAs)exert pivotal influence in the intricate orchestration of gene regulation, and their dysregulation can precipitate dire consequences, notably cancer.Within this context,miRNAs encapsulated in exosomes manifest a diversified impact on the landscape of lung cancer, wherein their actions may either foster angiogenesis, cell proliferation, and metastasis,or counteract these processes. This comprehensive review article discerns potential targets for the prospective development of therapeutic agents tailored for lung cancer.Tumor-suppressive miRNAs,such as miR-204,miR-192,miR-30a,miR-34a,miR-34b,miR-203,and miR-212,exhibit heightened expression and demonstrate the capacity to inhibit cellular proliferation and invasiveness.Conversely, the deleterious effects of tumor-promoting miRNAs like miR-21,miR-106a,miR-155,miR-205,and miR-210 can be attenuated through the application of their respective inhibitors.Distinct miRNAs selectively target various oncogenes, including NUAK Family Kinase 1(NUAK1),Snail Family Transcriptional Repressor 1(Snai1),Astrocyte elevated gene-1(AEG-1),Vimentin,Proliferation and apoptosis adaptor protein 15(PEA-15/PED),Hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha(HIF1),as well as tumor suppressor genes such as phosphatase and tensin homolog(PTEN),Suppressor of cytokine signaling 1(SOCS1),Tumor protein P53 binding protein 1(TP53BP1),and PH Domain and Leucine Rich Repeat Protein Phosphatase 2(PHLP22).This investigative approach proves invaluable in elucidating the specific miRNAs implicated in the deregulation of crucial genes pivotal to the pathogenesis of cancer. | SHAHID HUSSAIN HABIB BOKHARI XINGXING FAN SHAUKAT IQBAL MALIK SUNDAS IJAZ MUHAMMAD ADNAN SHEREEN AIMAN FATIMA | 2024 | BIOCELL2024,48,3: | 0
