2Is the maximum carbon number of long-chain n-alkanes an indicator of grassland or forest? Evidence from surface soils and modern plants显示文摘The molecular distribution of long-chain n-alkanes in 62 soil samples collected from diverse locations across eastern China was analyzed.The long-chain n-alkanes were mostly dominated by n-C29 or n-C31,regardless of the overlying vegetation type at each site.The results were compared with those summarized from the literature,covering more than 100 soil samples within China and more than 300 genera of modern plants distributed worldwide.There were similar n-alkane distribution patterns for most genera, with no clear differences among grasses,shrubs,and trees.The evidence from analyses of surface soils and modern plants indicates that the relationship between the molecular distribution of long-chain n-alkanes of surface soils and source vegetation is highly complex,and is influenced by many factors.Further,it is suggested that source vegetation types should not be simply inferred from distribution patterns of long-chain n-alkanes in sediments.RAO ZhiGuo WU Yi ZHU ZhaoYu JIA GuoDong HENDERSON Andrew 2011Chinese Science Bulletin2011,56,16:9
3Regional Moisture Source Changes Inferred from Late Holocene Stable Isotope Records显示文摘Qinghai Lake, China, is located near the northern limit of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and thus is an ideal region for studies of past monsoonal changes. However, isotope records from this region reffect the combined effects of multiple climatic factors, and make climatic interpretations difficult. The authors use multi-proxy records, generated from the same sediment core from Qinghai Lake, to disentangle these multiple effects in isotope records and to infer EASM variability during the late Holocene. Records of leaf wax (C28) δD, lake carbonate δ18O and the Dunde ice core δ18O all indicate a millennial-scale depletion of mean isotopic values at ~1500–1250 years before present. Compared with independent lake temperature and salinity records, the authors suggest that this depletion of long-term mean isotopic values must have resulted from changes in moisture sources in this region. In contrast, the authors attribute high-frequency (centennial timescale) C28 δD and ice core δ18O variability dominantly to a temperature effect. The multi- proxy records provide a coherent picture in that many aspects of this regional climate (temperature, dryness, and moisture source) are strongly linked to the EASM variability.Zhonghui LIU Andrew C. 4Disentangling multiple scattering with deep learning:application to strain mapping from electron diffraction patterns显示文摘A fast,robust pipeline for strain mapping of crystalline materials is important for many technological applications.Scanning electron nanodiffraction allows us to calculate strain maps with high accuracy and spatial resolutions,but this technique is limited when the electron beam undergoes multiple scattering.Deep-learning methods have the potential to invert these complex signals,but require a large number of training examples.We implement a Fourier space,complex-valued deep-neural network,FCU-Net,to invert highly nonlinear electron diffraction patterns into the corresponding quantitative structure factor images.FCU-Net was trained using over 200,000 unique simulated dynamical diffraction patterns from different combinations of crystal structures,orientations,thicknesses,and microscope parameters,which are augmented with experimental artifacts.We evaluated FCU-Net against simulated and experimental datasets,where it substantially outperforms conventional analysis methods.Our code,models,and training library are open-source and may be adapted to different diffraction measurement problems.Joydeep Munshi Alexander Rakowski Benjamin H.Savitzky Steven E.Zeltmann Jim Ciston Matthew Henderson Shreyas Cholia Andrew M.Minor Maria K.Y.Chan Colin Ophus 2022npj Computational Materials2022,,1:2
