| 1 | Modulatory effects of acupuncture on brain networks in mild cognitive impairment patients显示文摘Functional magnetic resonance imaging has been widely used to investigate the effects of acupuncture on neural activity. However, most functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have focused on acute changes in brain activation induced by acupuncture. Thus, the time course of the therapeutic effects of acupuncture remains unclear. In this study, 32 patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment were randomly divided into two groups, where they received either Tiaoshen Yizhi acupuncture or sham acupoint acupuncture. The needles were either twirled at Tiaoshen Yizhi acupoints, including Sishencong(EX-HN1), Yintang(EX-HN3), Neiguan(PC6), Taixi(KI3), Fenglong(ST40), and Taichong(LR3), or at related sham acupoints at a depth of approximately 15 mm, an angle of ± 60°, and a rate of approximately 120 times per minute. Acupuncture was conducted for 4 consecutive weeks, five times per week, on weekdays. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging indicated that connections between cognition-related regions such as the insula, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, inferior parietal lobule, and anterior cingulate cortex increased after acupuncture at Tiaoshen Yizhi acupoints. The insula, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus acted as central brain hubs. Patients in the Tiaoshen Yizhi group exhibited improved cognitive performance after acupuncture. In the sham acupoint acupuncture group, connections between brain regions were dispersed, and we found no differences in cognitive function following the treatment. | 3 | Oral health status in Sichuan Province: findings from the oral health survey of Sichuan, 2015–2016显示文摘To investigate oral health status in the residents of Sichuan Province, southwest China, a cross-sectional study was performed using the latest Oral Health Survey Basic Methods recommended by the World Health Organization. A multistage stratified random cluster-sampling method was used to enroll participants from the following three groups: children aged 3–5 years,adolescents aged 12 years, and people aged 65–74 years. In these three groups, the mean numbers of teeth that were affected by caries were 3.28, 0.86 and 5.13, respectively, resulting in a prevalence of 63.47%, 37.20% and 83.20%, respectively.Relative to the high rate of decayed teeth, the prevalence of fillings was very low in all age groups(0.97%, 7.24% and 5.43%,respectively). In the 12-year-old adolescent group, only 3.61% had good pit and fissure sealing. In addition, the rate of dental fluorosis was 24.80%, and the Community Fluorosis Index value was 0.39. In the elder group, the community periodontal index was2.92. The prevalence in the elderly of having lost at least one tooth was 75.54%. Additionally, 4.44% of these participants were edentulous. The incidence of dental prosthesis was 51.75%, the proportion with a removable partial denture, a fixed denture, full dentures, dental implants and an informal fixed bridge was 21.59%, 11.45%, 4.64%, 0 and 16.67%, respectively. In this study,8.2% of the elderly participants were affected by different types of oral mucosal lesions. Among such lesions, recurrent aphthous ulcers were most prevalent(2.69%) and oral lichen planuses were second(1.6%). The conclusion presented in this survey is that oral diseases, especially dental caries and periodontal disease, are frequent and common in Sichuan province, China. | 7 | Sex-influenced association of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps显示文摘AIM To investigate the relationship between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) and colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps.METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 3686 individuals undergoing health checkups(2430 males and 1256 females). All subjects underwent laboratory testing,abdominal ultrasonography,colonoscopy,and an interview to ascertain the baseline characteristics and general state of health. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between NAFLD and the prevalence of colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps.Furthermore,the relationship was analyzed in different sex groups. Subgroup analysis was performed based on number,size,and location of colorectal polyps.RESULTS The prevalence of colorectal polyps was 38.8% in males(16.2% for adenomatous polyps and 9.8% for hyperplastic polyps) and 19.3% in females(8.4% for adenomatous polyps and 3.9% for hyperplastic polyps). When adjusting for confounding variables,NAFLD was significantly associated with the prevalence of adenomatous polyps(OR = 1.28,95%CI: 1.05-1.51,P < 0.05) and hyperplastic polyps(OR = 1.35,95%CI: 1.01-1.82,P < 0.05). However,upon analyzing adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps in different sex groups,the significant association remained in males(OR = 1.53,95%CI: 1.18-2.00,P < 0.05; OR = 1.42,95%CI: 1.04-1.95,P < 0.05) but not in females(OR = 0.44,95%CI: 0.18-1.04,P > 0.05; OR = 1.18,95%CI: 0.50-2.78,P > 0.05). CONCLUSION NAFLD is specifically associated with an increased risk of colorectal adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps in men. | 11 | Effects of electroacupuncture and Chinese kidney-nourishing medicine on polycystic ovary syndrome in obese patients显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of electroacupuncture and Chinese kidney-nourishing medicine on insulin (INS), adiponectin (APN), leptin (LEP), and glucolipid metabolism of obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: Sixty-seven obese PCOS patients were randomly divided into two groups. Thirty-three patients in the acupuncture-medicine group were treated three times a week with electroacupuncture at the Tianshu (ST 25), Zhongwan (CV 12), Qihai (CV 6), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Geshu (BL 17), and Cil-iao (BL 32) acupoints. They also took the Chinese drug, Tiankui capsule, for 3 months as a course of treatment. Point-taking and treatment in the electroacupuncture group of 34 patients was the same as those in the acupuncture-medicine group. We observed and compared the changes in the obesity-related indexes of body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip ratio (WHR), as well as fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting insulin (FINS), APN, and LEP. RESULTS: BW, BMI, WHR, and FINS decreased and insulin sensitivity index (ISI) and APN were higher in the acupuncture-medicine group than in the electroacupuncture group (P<0.01). There was no obvious difference in LEP between the two groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture combined with medicine is better than just electroacupuncture for obese PCOS patients by improving obesity-related indexes, insulin sensitivity, and APN level. | 12 | Transmission of climate change impacts from temperature change to grain harvests, famines and peasant uprisings in the historical China显示文摘Because of the complexity of social responses to climate change,as well as limitations of proxy data concerning interactions between climate change and human responses,the social impacts of past climate change and associated response mechanisms,thus,require further investigation.To shed light on the transmission of climate change impacts within historical Chinese society,we selected 30-year resolution sequences of temperature anomalies in eastern China and 10-year resolution sequences of grain harvest grades,famine indices,and frequencies of peasant uprisings in China over the past 2000 years.Using a food security perspective,we analyzed the impacts of temperature changes historically transmitted through Chinese production,population,and social subsystems,and differences in transmission characteristics between cold and warm units.Our results were as follows.(1)From 210 BC to 1910 AD,temperature changes in China were significantly positively correlated with grain harvest grades(correlation coefficient,0.338),and significantly negatively correlated with famine indices,and frequencies of peasant uprisings(correlation coefficients,-0.301 and-0.277,respectively).The correlation coefficients between famine indices and grain harvest grades or frequencies of peasant uprisings were very low.(2)There was a higher proportion of bumper or normal harvests(86.5%of the total decades),more moderate and mild famines(76%),and a lower proportion of peasant uprisings(33.3%)in the 30-year warm units.Conversely,there was a higher proportion of poor or normal harvests(70.7%),a greater proportion of moderate and severe famines(77.6%),and more peasant uprisings(51.7%)in the 30-year cold units.(3)Of the 23 main transmission pathways extending from temperature change to the social subsystem,13 occurred in cold units,of which 7 had an endpoint of peasant uprisings,and 10 occurred in warm units of which 3 had an endpoint of peasant uprisings.The main transmission pathways that were more likely to be associated with the impacts of temperature change were:Cold→poor harvests→severe famines→more uprisings;cold→poor harvests→moderate famines→more uprisings;warm→bumper harvests→mild famines→no uprisings;warm→bumper harvests→moderate harvests→no uprisings;warm→normal harvests→mild famines→no uprisings;and warm→normal harvests→moderate famines→no uprisings.(4)The transmission of the impacts of temperature change was a complex process.Within this process,famine was most prone to being modulated by human society.In the transmission pathways from the production to the social subsystem,there was a stepwise decrease in the occurrence rate of decades that were probably affected by climate change.In all cold units,10.4%of decades ending in more uprisings were most likely to be associated with the impacts of temperature change.In all warm units,47.9%of decades ending in no uprisings were most likely to be associated with the impacts of temperature change.This research can contribute a better understanding on the past interaction mechanisms and processes within the human-climate-ecosystem complex,as well as a better response to the impacts of the ongoing climate change. | FANG XiuQi SU Yun YIN Jun TENG JingChao | 2015 | Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,8: | 15 |
| 13 | Multiple hypointense vessels on susceptibility-weighted imaging predict early neurological deterioration in acute ischaemic stroke patients with severe intracranial large artery stenosis or occlusion receiving intravenous thrombolysis显示文摘background and purpose Early neurological deterioration(END)is a common feature in patients with acute ischaemic stroke(AIS)receiving thrombolysis.This study aimed to investigate whether the presence of multiple hypointense vessels(MHVs)on susceptibility-weighted imaging(SWI)could predict END in patients with the anterior circulation AIS treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator(r-tPA).Methods This was a retrospective study focusing on AIS patients suffering from symptomatic stenosis or occlusion of the middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery with r-tPA treatment.We collected clinical variables and initial haematological and neuroimaging findings.MHVs were measured on SWI performed after intravenous thrombosis and were defined as the presence of a greater number of veins or veins of a larger diameter with greater signal loss on SWI than those of the contralesional haemisphere.The degree of hyperintensity of MHVs was classified into four grades:none,subtle,moderate and extensive.END was defined as an increase in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score by 2 points during the first 48 hours after the onset of symptoms.Multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to investigate the predictors of END.results The study included 61 patients(51 males and 10 females)with a mean age of 62.4±12.6 years.Thirty-five(57.4%)patients presented with MHVs:8(13.1%)were graded as subtle MHVs,while 23(37.7%)and 4(6.6%)were graded as moderate or extensive MHVs,respectively.Twenty patients(32.8%)presented with END.Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with patients without MHVs,moderate MHVs(adjusted OR 5.446,95%CI 1.360 to 21.800;p=0.017)and extensive MHVs(adjusted OR 15.240,95%CI 1.200 to 193.544;p=0.036)were significantly associated with END.Conclusions MHVs might be a useful predictor of END in AIS patients with symptomatic large artery stenosis or occlusion after r-tPA treatment. | Yong-Lin Liu Han-Peng Yin Dong-Hai Qiu Jian-Feng Qu Huo-Hua Zhong Zhi-Hao Lu Fang Wang Man-Qiu Liang Yang-Kun Chen | 2020 | Stroke & Vascular Neurology2020,5,4: | 14 |
| 14 | Impact of climate change on fluctuations of grain harvests in China from the Western Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties(206 BC–960 AD)显示文摘The occurrence of bumper or poor grain harvests in ancient China plays an important role in explaining how past climate changes affected the economy.Because of the lack of long-term continuous and high-resolution quantitative data for reconstructing the series of grain harvests in ancient China,understanding of the impacts and mechanisms involved in climate change is limited.This study presents a method designed for reconstructing grain harvest series by quantifying grain output levels based on the descriptions in historical documents.The method involves setting the grain output level for each year based on very specific meanings of different words,calculating a yield index based on the structure of each level and assessing grain yields(bumper or poor harvests)every 10 years.First,1636 records related to grain yields(including crop yields,food security,agricultural disasters,grain prices,grain storage and people's livelihoods)for each year were retrieved from history books called the Twenty-Four Histories.Second,using this method,a 10-year resolution graded grain harvest series from the Western Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties(206 BC–960 AD)is reconstructed.Finally,the relationship between the variations in temperature and precipitation and the fluctuation of grain yields is examined.The results show that from the Western Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties,bumper,average and poor harvest decades accounted for 33.3%,39.3%and 27.4%of the 1,166-year period,respectively.The grain yields during 206 BC–960 AD can be divided into three stages:a period of bumper harvests during 206–51 BC,poor harvests during 50 BC–590 AD and bumper harvests during 591–960 AD.Bumper harvest decades typically experienced a warm climate with normal or high levels of precipitation,while poor harvest decades had a cold and dry climate.A positive correlation was found between temperature and grain yield because a warm climate allows a full use of resources.The observed relationship between precipitation and grain yield indicated that both flooding and droughts cause poor harvests,which confirms that agricultural production in the monsoon climate of eastern China is greatly impacted by conditions of limited heat and extreme precipitation. | SU Yun FANG XiuQi YIN Jun | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,7: | 13 |
| 15 | Endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium promotes angiogenesis and is neuroprotective after spinal cord injury显示文摘Endothelial progenitor cells secrete a variety of growth factors that inhibit inflammation, promote angiogenesis and exert neuroprotective effects. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium might have therapeutic effectiveness for the treatment of spinal cord injury using both in vitro and in vivo experiments. After primary culture of bone marrow-derived macrophages, lipopolysaccharide stimulation was used to classically activate macrophages to their proinflammatory phenotype. These cells were then treated with endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium or control medium. Polymerase chain reaction was used to determine mR NA expression levels of related inflammatory factors. Afterwards, primary cultures of rat spinal cord neuronal cells were prepared and treated with H_2O_2 and either endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium or control medium. Hoechst 33258 and propidium iodide staining were used to calculate the proportion of neurons undergoing apoptosis. Aortic ring assay was performed to assess the effect of endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium on angiogenesis. Compared with control medium, endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium mitigated the macrophage inflammatory response at the spinal cord injury site, suppressed apoptosis, and promoted angiogenesis. Next, we used a rat model of spinal cord injury to examine the effects of the endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium in vivo. The rats were randomly administered intraperitoneal injection of PBS, control medium or endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium, once a day, for 6 consecutive weeks. Immunohistochemistry was used to observe neuronal morphology. Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated d UTP nick-end labeling assay was performed to detect the proportion of apoptotic neurons in the gray matter. The Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan Locomotor Rating Scale was used to evaluate the recovery of motor function of the bilateral hind limbs after spinal cord injury. Compared with the other two groups, the number of axons was increased, cavities in the spinal cord were decreased, the proportion of apoptotic neurons in the gray matter was reduced, and the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan score was higher in the endothelial progenitor cell-conditioned medium group. | 16 | Major advances in studies of the physical geography and living environment of China during the past 70 years and future prospects显示文摘The natural environment provides material essentials for human survival and development. The characteristics,processes, regional differentiation and forcing mechanisms of the elements of the natural environment(e.g. geomorphology,climate, hydrology, soil, etc.) are the main objects of research in physical geography. China has a complex natural environment and huge regional differentiation and therefore it provides outstanding reserach opportunities in physical geography. This review summarizes the most important developments and the main contributions of research in the physical geography and human living environment in China during the past 70 years. The major topics addressed are the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the evolution of its cryosphere, the development of fluvial systems, the acidification of the vast arid region of the Asian interior, variations in the monsoon and westerly climate systems on multiple timescales, the development of lakes and wetlands, the watershed system model, soil erosion, past human-environment interactions, biogeography, and physical geographic zonality. After briefly introducing international research developments, we review the history of research in physical geography in China, focusing on the major achievements and major academic debates, and finally we summarize the status of current research and the future prospects. | 18 | Characteristics of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Women Aged 15-49 Years from 2005 to 2012 in China显示文摘Objective To describe the characteristics of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in women aged 15-49 years in China. Methods HIV/AIDS cases from 2005 to 2012 that fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified on the Chinese HIV/AIDS case reporting system. Descriptive and spatial analyses were performed. Results A total of 103,559 female HIV/AIDS cases were included in our study. Based on the descriptive analysis, between 2005 and 2012, the proportion of heterosexually acquired HIV infection among women(15-49 years) increased rapidly from 35.8% to 87.4%. Approximately 60% of these cases were infected through non-marital heterosexual contact. Among older women(40-49 years), a slightly increasing trend was identified. The spatial analysis detected ‘hot spots' in the Xinjiang, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, and Chongqing provinces. The epidemic trends in these areas were predominately driven by heterosexual transmission. Conclusion Non-marital heterosexual contact is a very important factor in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in women aged 15-49 years, and the HIV infection rate in older women is increasing. Several epidemic hot spots were detected in northwestern and southwestern China. | 19 | Effect of Shen-Fu Injection(参附注射液)on Hemodynamics in Early Volume Resuscitation Treated Septic Shock Patients显示文摘Objective: To investigate the hemodynamic effect of Shen-Fu Injection(参附注射液, SFI) in early volume resuscitation treated septic shock patients by monitoring pulse indicator continuous cardiac output(PICCO). Methods: All septic shock patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of the Affiliated Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from January 1 st, 2014 to December 31 th, 2015, were reviewed, and totally 65 were enrolled in this study. They were assigned to SFI group(33 cases) and control group(32 cases). All 65 patients underwent conventional treatment mainly including volume resuscitation, antibiotics and vasoactive drugs therapy. The patients of the SFI group received additional 100 mL of SFI intravenously every 12 h. In all 65 patients, the PICCO arterial catheter and vein catheter were implanted within 1 h after the diagnosis of septic shock. In the course of early volume resuscitation, hemodynamic data of patients were recorded by PICCO monitor at 0, 12, and 24 h after the catheter implantation. Results: The hemodynamic indices of the two groups showed no significant differences at the beginning of 0 h(P>0.05). At 12 and 24 h, the hemodynamic indices of SFI group were significantly improved in comparison with the control group(P<0.05), including cardiac index(CI), global end diastolic volume index(GEDI), mean arterial pressure(MAP) and heart rate(HR). In addition, there was no significant change of extra-vascular lung water index between the two groups(P>0.05).
