| 1 | A photothermal reservoir for highly efficient solar steam generation without bulk water显示文摘A solid photothermal reservoir is designed to implement solar-steam generation in the absence of bulk water.The photothermal reservoir is composed of a water absorbing core encapsulated by a photothermal reduced graphene oxide based aerogel sheet which absorbs light and converts it into heat thus evaporating the stored water.The photothermal reservoir is able to store 6.5 times its own weight in water,which is sufficient for one day solar evaporation,thus no external water supplement is required.During solar-steam generation,since no bulk water is involved,the photothermal reservoir minimizes heat conduction loss,and maximizes both of the exposed evaporation surface area and net energy gain from the environment,leading to an energy efficiency beyond the theoretical limit.An extremely high water evaporation rate of 4.0 kg m-2 h-1(normalized to projection area)is achieved in laboratory studies over a cylinder photothermal reservoir with a diameter of 5.2 cm and a height of 15 cm under 1.0 sun irradiation.Practical evaluation of the photothermal reservoir outdoors as part of a desalination device demonstrates a similar evaporation rate where the salinity of the clean water produced is lower than 24 ppb.Thus the photothermal reservoir shows great potential for real world applications in portable solarthermal desalination. | Xuan Wu Ting Gao Chenhui Han Jingsan Xu Gary Owens Haolan Xu | 2019 | Science Bulletin2019,64,21: | 9 |
| 2 | Dexamethasone-loaded ROS-responsive poly(thioketal)nanoparticles suppress inflammation and oxidative stress of acute lung injury显示文摘Acute lung injury(ALI)is associated with excessive inflammatory response,leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome(ARDS)without timely treatment.A fewer effective drugs are available currently to treat the ALI/ARDS.Herein,a therapeutic nanoplatform with reactive oxygen species(ROS)-responsiveness was developed for the regulation of inflammation.Dexamethasone acetate(Dex)was encapsulated into poly(thioketal)polymers to form polymeric nanoparticles(NPs)(PTKNPs@Dex).The NPs were composed of poly(1,4-phenyleneacetonedimethylene thioketal)(PPADT)and polythioketal urethane(PTKU),in which the thioketal bonds could be cleaved by the high level of ROS at the ALI site.The PTKNPs@Dex could accumulate in the pulmonary inflammatory sites and release the encapsulated payloads rapidly,leading to the decreased ROS level,less generation of pro-inflammatory cytokines,and reduced lung injury and mortality of mice.RNA sequencing(RNA-seq)analysis showed that the therapeutic efficacy of the NPs was associated with the modulation of many immune and inflammation-linked pathways.These findings provide a newly developed nanoplatform for the efficient treatment of ALI/ARDS. | Zihe Zhai Wei Ouyang Yuejun Yao Yuqi Zhang Haolan Zhang Feng Xu Changyou Gao | 2022 | Bioactive Materials2022,7,8: | 5 |
| 3 | Brain neural effects of the ’tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow’ method in the treatment of osteoporosis显示文摘In Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),the'tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow'(TKBM)method is based on the theory that kidney controls bones,while marrow moistens bones.There have been aboundant theoretical studies on kidney controlling bones since Huangdi's Internal Classics.Howev-er,there are too few ones about the marrow moistening the bones.Researchers generally use the tonifying kidney method instead of the TKBM method,which causes lack of a unified standard and theoretical basis in evaluating the TKBM method.Herein,we first proposed the hypothesis that deficiency of marrow sea causes osteoporosis.Next,we prove the scientific validity of this hypothesis from the side of the TCM theory on the relationship among kidney,bone and marrow sea physiologically and pathologically.Based on this,we find that the TCM theory provides theoretical basis for deficiency of marrow sea causing osteoporosis.On the other side,Western Medicine theory holds that(a)physiologically,the brain regulates the bone mass via three pathways:the neuro-osteogenic network,neuro-endocrine-bone network,and neuropeptide-bone network;(b)pathologically,brain impacts bone mass via three major passways including the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system,secreting hormones that directly act on bone cells and regulating the synthesis and secretion of hormones in the intermediary organs,and neuropeptides such as neuropeptide Y(NPY),substance P(SP),and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP).Evidences involving estrogen deficiency,sympatheticotonia,or neuropeptides imbalance prove that brain-bone mass regulation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis.Finally,we find that kidney invigoration method can change the concentrations of central neurotransmitters of norepinephrine and glutamate to regulate neuro-osteogenic network,and promote the recovery of ovarian function and have an estrogen-like effect by regulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis,which thus influences bone metabolism without clinically significant estro-gen-like side effects,and regulate NPY,CGRP and SP involved in the bone metabolism.These further support our hypothesis by revealing the brain neural mechanism of the TCM kidney invigoration method for preventing and treating osteoporosis.In the future,neuroimaging techniques may be useful in exploring its neural effects and also aid in developing new strategies for treating osteoporosis. | Xu Yunxiang Liu Xueqin Li Haolan Liu Hongyuan Pan Zhanxia Chen Guizhen | 2019 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2019,39,6: | 5 |

| 11 | Harvesting,sensing and regulating light based on photo-thermal effect of Cu@CuO mesh显示文摘A system of light harvesting, sensing and regulating was designed based on the photo-thermal and Seebeck effect of flexible CuO nanostructures. Cu@CuO meshes were prepared via self-oxidation of Cu mesh and utilized as the photo-thermal material. Upon irradiation by visible light, the temperature of the Cu@CuO mesh dramatically increases. The temperature difference between the irradiated and non-irradiated parts of the Cu@CuO mesh produced a measurable voltage output due to the Seebeck effect. The generated voltage was then converted into a digital signal to control a rotary neutral-density disc to filter the received light. This enabled regulation of the intensity of the incident light at a selected region. | 16 | Boosting extraction of Pb in contaminated soil via interfacial solar evaporation of multifunctional sponge显示文摘Interfacial solar water evaporation is a reliable way to accelerate water evaporation and contaminant remediation.Embracing the recent advance in photothermal technology,a functional sponge was prepared by coating a sodium alginate(SA)impregnated sponge with a surface layer of reduced graphene oxide(rGO)to act as a photothermal conversion medium and then subsequently evaluated for its ability to enhance Pb extraction from contaminated soil driven by interfacial solar evaporation.The SA loaded sponge had a Pb adsorption capacity of 107.4 mg g^(-1).Coating the top surface of the SA sponge with rGO increased water evaporation performance to 1.81 kg m^(-2)h^(-1)in soil media under one sun illumination and with a wind velocity of 2 m s^(-1).Over 12 continuous days of indoor evaporation testing,the Pb extraction efficiency was increased by 22.0%under 1 sun illumination relative to that observed without illumination.Subsequently,Pb extraction was further improved by 48.9%under outdoor evaporation conditions compared to indoor conditions.Overall,this initial work shows the significant potential of interfacial solar evaporation technologies for Pb contaminated soil remediation,which should also be applicable to a variety of other environmental contaminants. | Pan Wu Xuan Wu Yida Wang Jingyuan Zhao Haolan Xu Gary Owens | 2023 | Green Energy & Environment2023,8,5: | 0 |
