| 2 | Timing of the Wudangshan, Yaolinghe volcanic sequences and mafic sills in South Qinling: U-Pb zircon geochronology and tectonic implication显示文摘The Wudangshan, Yaolinghe volcanic-sedimentary sequences and doleritic-gabbroic sills comprise the largest exposed Precambrian basement in South Qinling. Zircons separated from 5 volcanic-pyroclas- tic samples of the Wudangshan Group, 2 volcanic samples of the Yaolinghe Group and one sample for the mafic sills were used for U-Pb dating by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spec- trometry (LA-ICPMS). The results reveal that the Wudangshan volcanic sequence was formed at (755±3) Ma (a weighted mean from the 5 samples, MSWD=0.47), whereas the Yaolinghe volcanic suite and the mafic sill were crystallized at (685±5) (2 samples, MSWD=0.36) and (679±3) Ma (MSWD=1.6), respectively, which are equal to each other within analysis errors. These ages are markedly younger than those previously documented for the rocks. The newly obtained ages for the Wudangshan and Yaolinghe Groups are identical to those of the bottom Liantuo and slightly older than those of the Nantuo Forma- tions, respectively, lower strata of the Nanhua (middle to late Neoproterozoic) stratotype section in eastern Three Gorges, Yangtze craton. A range of inherited magmatic zircons was recognized with ages of 830 to 780 Ma, which are typical of Neoprotzrozoic magmatisms recorded along the margins and interior of the Yangtze craton. Thus, there is Neoproterozoic basement comprising 830―780 Ma igne- ous suites in South Qinling; the inherited zircons were detrital sediments derived from the northern margin of the Yangtze craton. | 5 | Exotic origin of the Chinese continental shelf: new insights into the tectonic evolution of the western Pacific and eastern China since the Mesozoic显示文摘The effect of paleo-Pacific subduction on the geological evolution of the western Pacific and continental China is likely complex. Nevertheless, our analysis of the distribution of Mesozoic granitoids in the eastern continental China in space and time has led us to an interesting conclusion: The basement of the continental shelf beneath East and South China Seas may actually be of exotic origin geologically unrelated to the continental lithosphere of eastern China. By accepting the notion that the Jurassic–Cretaceous granitoids in the region are genetically associated with western Pacific subduction and the concept that subduction may cease to continue only if the trench is being jammed, then the termination of the granitoidmagmatism throughout the vast region at *88 ± 2 Ma manifests the likelihood of ‘‘sudden'', or shortly beforehand(*100 Ma), trench jam of the Mesozoic western Pacific subduction. Trench jam happens if the incoming‘‘plate'' or portion of the plate contains a sizeable mass that is too buoyant to subduct. The best candidate for such a buoyant and unsubductable mass is either an oceanic plateau or a micro-continent. We hypothesize that the basement of the Chinese continental shelf represents such an exotic, buoyant and unsubductable mass, rather than seaward extension of the continental lithosphere of eastern China. The locus of the jammed trench(i.e., the suture) is predictably located on the shelf in the vicinity of, and parallel to, the arc-curved coastal line of the southeast continental China. It is not straightforward to locate the locus in the northern section of the East China Sea shelf because of the more recent(\20 Ma) tectonic re-organization associated with the opening of the Sea of Japan. We predict that the trench jam at *100 Ma led to the re-orientation of the Pacific plate motion in the course of NNW direction as inferred from the age-progressive Emperor Seamount Chain of Hawaiian hotspot origin(its oldest unsubdued Meiji and Detroit seamounts are *82 Ma),making the boundary between the Pacific plate and the newly accreted plate of eastern Asia a transform fault at the location east of the continental shelf of exotic origin. This explains the apparent *40 Myr magmatic gap from *88to *50 Ma prior to present-day western Pacific subduction initiation. We propose that basement penetration drilling on well-chosen sites is needed to test the hypothesis in order to reveal the true nature of the Chinese continental shelf basement. This testing becomes critical and cannot longer be neglected in order to genuinely understand the tectonic evolution of the western Pacific and its effect on the geology of eastern China since the Mesozoic, includingthe cratonic lithosphere thinning, related magmatism/mineralization, and the mechanism of the subsequent South China Sea opening, while also offering novel perspectives on aspects of the plate tectonics theory. We also suggest the importance of future plate tectonic reconstruction of the western Pacific to consider the nature and histories of the Chinese continental shelf of exotic origin as well as the probable transform plate boundary from *100 to*50 Ma. | 6 | U-Pb dating of detrital zircons from the Wudangshan Group in the South Qinling and its geological significance显示文摘U-Pb dating was made by the LA-ICP-MS method for detrital zircons from the Wudangshan volcanic-sedimentary succession in the South Qinling. Samples comprise quartz sandstones of the Wudangshan Group collected from the base of the Yangping For-mation and an upper layer of the Shuangtai Formation overlain its volcanic sequence, and two river-sand collections from the drainage systems cutting across the two formations, respectively. The results show that the Yangping detrital zircons are domi-nated by 830–780 Ma grains with a minor population of ~1.0–0.84 Ga and sporadic grains of ~2.6, ~2.4 and 2.0 Ga, whereas the Shuangtai zircons yield an upper intercept age of 763±33 Ma, identical to the timing of the Wudangshan volcanism within error, with few concordant grains of 1.9 and 0.86 Ga. Age spectra for the two river-sand samples are similar to those of the Yangping and Shuangtai Formations, respectively. It thus suggests that the Wudangshan strata are less than 780 Ma, whereas their major detrital zircon populations of 1.0–0.85 Ga and 830–780 Ma are consistent with timing of the Hannan magmatic activities along the northwestern margin of the South China Block. This suggests a Hannan or adjacent area provenance for the Wudangshan strata. The Wudang area is characterized by rift-related igneous events at ~755 and ~680 Ma, respectively, pointing to a tectono-magmatic history different from the Hannan area. | 7 | Zircon U-Pb dating on the Mesozoic volcanic suite from the Qingshan Group stratotype section in eastern Shandong Province and its tectonic significance显示文摘A geochronological study of zircon U-Pb on the volcanic rocks from the stratotype section of the Qingshan Group within the Jiaozhou Basin, eastern Shandong Province, is presented. The zircons were analyzed using the method of in situ ablation of a 193 nm excimer laser system coupled with an up to date ICP-MS system. Among the three formations of the Qingshan Group, zircons recovered from the lowest part of the Houkuang Fm. were dated at 106±2 Ma (95% confidence, the same below), whereas those from the lower and upper parts of the Shiqianzhuang Fm. were given ages of 105±4 Ma and 98±1 Ma, respectively. A spatially decreasing trend for the Mesozoic magmatic timing from west to east in the province is observed through comparing the data of this study with those by previous works on the Qingshan volcanic lavas occurring at western Shandong and within the Yishu fault zone. The Qingshan volcanic rocks are constituent of the 'Shoshonite Province' in East China. Exposed at most provinces of central East China along the Tan-Lu fault and the Yangtze fault zones, these volcanic suites are characterized by shoshonite and high-K calcalkalic rocks in lithology and thought to be correlated with the partial melting of continental mantle in genesis. It is also shown that the Qingshan potassic volcanic suite from eastern Shandong basins is distinctly younger than those from other ar-eas of the shoshonite province. By contrary, ages of the Mesozoic to Cenozoic alkaline basalts, sourced by asthenospheric mantle, from both northern Huaiyan basin and northern Dabie belt along the Tan-Lu fault zone and from the Ningwu, Lishui and Luzong basins along the Yangtze fault zone are observably older than those occurring within eastern Shandong. | 9 | Degradation of Nitrobenzene-Containing Wastewater with O_3 and H_2O_2 by High Gravity Technology显示文摘Nitrobenzene-containing industrial wastewater was degraded in the presence of ozonecoupled with H2O2 by high gravity technology. The effect of high gravity factor, H2O2 concentration, pH value, liquid flow-rate, and reaction time on the efficiency for removal of nitrobenzene was investigated. The experimental results show that the high gravity technology enhances the ozone utilization efficiency with O3 /H2O2 showing synergistic effect. The degradation efficiency in terms of the COD removal rate and nitrobenzene removal rate reached 45.8% and 50.4%, respectively, under the following reaction conditions, viz.: a high gravity factor of 66.54, a pH value of 9, a H2O2 /O3 molar ratio of 1:1, a liquid flow rate of 140L/h, an ozone concentration of 40mg/L, a H2O2 multiple dosing mode of 6mL/h, and a reaction time of 4h. | 11 | Genetic and biological characteristics of the globally circulating H5N8 avian influenza viruses and the protective efficacy offered by the poultry vaccine currently used in China显示文摘The H5N8 avian influenza viruses have been widely circulating in wild birds and are responsible for the loss of over 33 million domestic poultry in Europe, Russia, Middle East, and Asia since January 2020. To monitor the invasion and spread of the H5N8 virus in China, we performed active surveillance by analyzing 317 wild bird samples and swab samples collected from 41,172 poultry all over the country. We isolated 22 H5N8 viruses from wild birds and 14 H5N8 viruses from waterfowls. Genetic analysis indicated that the 36 viruses formed two different genotypes: one genotype viruses were widely detected from different wild birds and domestic waterfowls;the other genotype was isolated from a whopper swan. We further revealed the origin and spatiotemporal spread of these two distinct H5N8 virus genotypes in 2020 and 2021. Animal studies indicated that the H5N8 isolates are highly pathogenic to chickens, mildly pathogenic in ducks, but have distinct pathotypes in mice. Moreover, we found that vaccinated poultry in China could be completely protected against H5N8 virus challenge. | 18 | Establishment of an efficient transformation protocol and its application in marine-derived Bacillus strain显示文摘Marine-derived Bacillus strains have been proved to be a very promising source for natural product leads.However,transformation of environmental strains is much more difficult than that of domesticated strains.Here,we report the development of an efficient and robust electroporation-based transformation system for marine-derived Bacillus marinus B-9987,which is a macrolactin antibiotics producer and a very promising biological control agent against fungal plant diseases.The transformation efficiency was greatly enhanced 103-fold by using unmethylated plasmid to bypass modification-restriction barrier,and using glycine betaine to protect cells from electrical damages during electroporation.Addition of HEPES and 2 mmol L?1MgCl2 further improved the efficiency by additional 2-fold,with a maximum value of 7.1×104 cfu/μg pHT3101.To demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the protocol,a green fluorescent protein reporter system was constructed;furthermore,phosphopantetheinyl transferase gene sfp,which is essential to the biosynthesis of polyketides and nonribosomal peptides,was overexpressed in B-9987,leading to increased production of macrolactin A by about 1.6-fold.In addition,this protocol is also applicable to marine-derived Bacillus licheniforms EI-34-6,indicating it could be a reference for other undomesticated Bacillus strains.To our knowledge,this is the first report regarding the transformation of marine-derived Bacillus strain. | LIU Yang ZHENG Hua ZHAN GuiHua QIN Wen TIAN Li LI WenLi | 2014 | Science China(Life Sciences)2014,57,6: | 9 |

| 20 | Mesoproterozoic to Paleozoic Nd isotope stratigraphy of the South China continental nucleus and its geological significance显示文摘The Yangtze continental nucleus in South China is situated in the Huangling-Shennongjia area in western Hubei Province.It comprises the early Precambrian crystalline basement and generally successive Proterozoic to Phanerozoic sedimentary covers.This paper reports a comprehensive Nd isotope study of fine-grained sedimentary rocks from the regional Mesoproterozoic to early Paleozoic strata.The Nd model ages display a V-shaped variation from ~2.5-2.8 Ga during the late Mesoproterozoic through ~1.5-1.7 Ga during the Neoproterozoic Nanhua Period to ~1.8-2.1 Ga during the Paleozoic Ordovician,with corresponding Nd (t) ranges of 11 to 14,1.1 to 5.3,and 7.9 to 9.9,respectively.This evolutionary trend broadly resembles those documented in the sedimentary strata along the southeastern margin of the Yangtze Craton and within the Jiangnan orogenic belt,indicating that the whole South China block underwent a mantle-input related tectono-magmatic event at ~0.8 Ga or earlier.However,the Huangling-Shennongjia area is discriminated from the other two regions by highly variable model ages (~1.5-2.7 Ga) and Nd (t) values (1.38-12.0) of the early Mesoproterozoic strata.Combined with the Archean model ages of the late Mesoproterozoic strata,it is suggested that the Mesoproterozoic sedimentary provenance of the Yangtze continental nucleus was distinct from that of the southeastern Yangtze Craton,likely indicative of an intervening aulacogen (or rift zone) or oceanic basin.In addition,the high comparability in Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic Nd isotope stratigraphy between the Yangtze Craton and the Jiangnan orogenic belt infers that the whole South China block had shared the same sedimentary basin and provenance since the Yangtze-Cathaysia welding at ~0.9 Ga.Thus,it is proposed that the Yangtze Craton had comprised a collage of micro-continents during the pre-Neoproterozoic until the Rodinia assemblage when the primitive South China block was formed. | BAI Xiao LING WenLi DUAN RuiChun QIU XiaoFei LIU ChengXin KUANG Hua GAO YongJuan ZHOU Lian CHEN ZiWan LU Shah-Song | 2011 | Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,11: | 8 |
