| 1 | On the combined effect of soil fertility and topography on tree growth in subtropical forest ecosystems—a study from SE China显示文摘Aims The aim of our research was to understand small-scale effects of topography and soil fertility on tree growth in a forest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning(BEF)experiment in subtropical SE China. Methods Geomorphometric terrain analyses were carried out at a spatial resolution of 5×5 m.Soil samples of different depth increments and data on tree height were collected from a total of 566 plots(667 m2 each). The soils were analyzed for carbon(soil organic carbon[SOC]),nitrogen, acidity, cation exchange capacity(CEC),exchangeable cations and base saturation as soil fertility attributes. All plots were classified into geomorphological units.Analyses of variance and linear regressions were applied to all terrain, soil fertility and tree growth attributes.Important Findings In general, young and shallow soils and relatively small differences in stable soil properties suggest that soil erosion has truncated the soils to a large extent over the whole area of the experiment. This explains the concurrently increasing CEC and SOC stocks downslope,in hollows and in valleys.However,colluvial,carbon-rich sediments are missing widely due to the convexity of the footslopes caused by uplift and removal of eroded sediments by adjacent waterways. The results showed that soil fertility is mainly influenced by topography.Monte-Carlo flow accumulation(MCCA),curvature, slope and aspect significantly affected soil fertility.Furthermore, soil fertility was affected by the different geomorphological positions on the experimental sites with ridge and spur positions showing lower exchangeable base cation contents, especially potassium(K),due to leaching. This geomorphological effect of soil fertility is most pronounced in the topsoil and decreases when considering the subsoil down to 50 cm depth.Few soil fertility attributes affect tree height after 1-2 years of growth, among which C stocks proved to be most important while pH_(KCl)and CEC only played minor roles.Nevertheless, soil acidity and a high proportion of Al on the exchange complex affected tree height even after only 1-2 years growth.Hence, our study showed that forest nutrition is coupled to a recycling of litter nutrients, and does not only depend on subsequent supply of nutrients from the mineral soil.Besides soil fertility, topography affected tree height. We found that especially MCCA as indicator of water availability affected tree growth at small-scale,as well as aspect.Overall, our synthesis on the interrelation between fertility, topography and tree growth in a subtropical forest ecosystem in SE China showed that topographic heterogeneity lead to ecological gradients across geomorphological positions. In this respect,small-scale soil-plant interactions in a young forest can serve as a driver for the future development of vegetation and biodiversity control on soil fertility. In addition,it shows that terrain attributes should be accounted for in ecological research. | Thomas Scholten Philipp Goebes Peter Kühn Steffen Seitz Thorsten Assmann Jürgen Bauhus Helge Bruelheide Francois Buscot Alexandra Erfmeier Markus Fischer Werner Härdtle Jin-Sheng He Keping Ma Pascal A.Niklaus Michael Scherer-Lorenzen Bernhard Schmid Xuezheng Shi Zhengshan Song Goddert von Oheimb Christian Wirth Tesfaye Wubet Karsten Schmidt | 2017 | Journal of Plant Ecology2017,10,1: | 22 |
| 2 | A C2-symmetric triple [5]helicene based on N-annulated triperylene hexaimide for chiroptical electronics显示文摘Two diastereoisomers(NTPH-P and NTPH-T1) as a C2-symmetric triple [5]helicene based on N-annulated triperylene hexaimide were synthesized.Aided by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy(NMR) and theoretical calculations,NTPH-P was assigned to three-blade propeller conformation while NTPH-T1 tended to exhibit twisted conformation with pyrrole ring fusing on a bowl-shaped PDI foil.Characterized by circular dichroism(CD) and circular polarized luminescence(CPL) measurements, the enantiomerically pure NTPH-P exhibited fairly good chiral activities both in the absorption and emission range with dissymmetry factors |gabs| of 4.1×10^-3 and |glum| of 1.2×10^-3.The diastereoisomers were further employed as acceptors for organic solar cells with distinct PCEs of 8.11% and 5.24% for NTPH-P and NTPH-T1 based devices, respectively, signifying the prospects in chiroptical electronics by designing molecularly defined aromatics. | Zetong Ma Thorsten Winands Ningning Liang Dong Meng Wei Jiang Nikos L.Doltsinis Zhaohui Wang | 2020 | Science China Chemistry2020,63,2: | 2 |

| 5 | Ultrastructure of Diophrys appendiculata and new systematic consideration of the euplotid family Uronychiidae(Protista,Ciliophora)显示文摘The ultrastructure of ciliates carries important cytological, taxonomical, and evolutionary signals for these single-celled eukaryotic organisms. However, little ultrastructural data have been accumulated for most ciliate groups with systematic problems. In the present work,a well-known marine uronychiid,Diophrys appendiculata, was investigated using electron microscopy and a comparison with, and a discussion considering, phylogenetic analyses were made. The new findings primarily show that:(i)this species lacks the typical alveolar plate, bears cortical ampule-like extrusomes, and has microtubular triads in the dorsal pellicle, and thus exhibits some ultrastructural features in common with most of its previously studied congeners;(ii)each adoral membranelle before the level of frontal cirrus II/2 contains three rows of kinetosomes and each membranelle after the level of frontal cirrus II/2 contains four rows, which might be related with morphogenesis and could be considered as a distinctive character of Diophrys;(iii)some structural details of the buccal field, such as the extra-pellicular fibrils, pellicle, pharyngeal disks and microtubular sheet, were documented. In addition, based on the ultrastructural comparison of representatives,we discuss the differentiation between the subfamilies Diophryinae and Uronychiinae.A hypothetical systematic relationship of members in the order Euplotida based on a wide range of data is also provided. | Jingyi Dong Yujie Liu Jiyang Ma Honggang Ma Thorsten Stoeck Xinpeng Fan | 2022 | Marine Life Science & Technology2022,4,4: | 0 |
| 6 | Report and Phylogeny of a Novel Euplotes Species from China:E.mazeii n.sp.,and Review of E.balteatus(Alveolata,Ciliophora)显示文摘The freshwater species,Euplotes mazeii n.sp.,and the marine species,E.balteatus(Dujardin,1841)Diesing,1850 were collected from China and investigated based on their living morphology, ciliary pattern, and small subunit ribosomal RNA(SSU rRNA)gene sequence data.Euplotes mazeii n.sp.was characterized by its small cell size((40-55)μm×(25-35)μm),nine frontoventral cirri, one marginal and two caudal cirri, seven dorsal kineties, and a double-eurystomus type of dorsal silverline system.Phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data confirmed the branching position of this new taxa within the genus Euplotes, with 5.01%(84 nucleotides)sequence variation, supporting the identification of a new species. We re-examined all described and supposedly conspecific populations and give a review of Euplotes balteatus.E.balteatus has been reported frequently;however,E.balteatus sensu Agamaliev,1968 is different from other populations in the number of marginal cirri or the type of silverline system, which suggests there might be a misidentification. The SSU rRNA gene sequences of two populations of E.balteatus from the studies of Chen et al.(2013)and Pan et al.(2012)differ from each other by more than 135 nucleotides, implying that the identity of the species currently associated with the SSU rRNA gene sequence in molecular databases requires further confirmation. | LIAN Chunyu JIANG Jiamei XI Muchen DONG Jingyi MA Honggang AL-FARRAJ Saleh A STOECK Thorsten WANG Chundi SHAO Chen | 2023 | Journal of Ocean University of China2023,22,3: | 0 |
