| 14 | Hotspot of Adult Cuban Treefrog and Cane Toad Multi-organ Abnormality in Suburban South-west Florida显示文摘This study represents a continuation of the Florida hotspot of tadpole abnormality found in the Southwest Florida suburban roadside drainage ditches in 2012 to determine if the adult frogs and toads frequenting the study sites were anatomically abnormal.The gross examination of all organs included 397 adult anurans and 40 metamorphs representing five anuran species:Osteopilus septentrionalis(N=364),Rhinella marina(N=60),Lithobates sphenocephala(N=7),Anaxyrus terrestris(N=5)and Anaxyrus americanus(N=1).The gonads,liver,kidney and intestines were abnormal at a frequency of 87.4%.The few normal anurans(12.6%)were females and young male adults.We found a significant difference in organ abnormality type and f requency between sexes.Almost all f rog and toad males had testicular abnormality(92%)with only 6%with normal testes,whereas the female gonad abnormality was lower,at 41.6%.Hermaphroditism was found in both sexes at a frequency of 26.2%.The toads had a significantly higher frequency of hermaphroditism than the frogs.The toad hermaphroditism frequency was found to be 40%,whereas the frog hermaphroditism 23.3%.A hermaphrodite Cane toad male with a female phenotype coexisted with the normal male phenotype hermaphrodite.The fertility of 27 in situ pairs was assessed.The fertile testicular abnormal male and hermaphrodite pairs produced offspring with abnormal larval morphology.This information adds new evidence of the effect of chemicals on wild populations and the effect on non-target species which has always been underestimated. | Sharon Pratt ANZALDUA Javier GOLDBERG | 2020 | Asian Herpetological Research2020,11,2: | 0 |

| 16 | Anti-cancer effects of aloe-emodin:a systematic review显示文摘Background:Anthraquinones are a possible treatment option for oncological patients due to their anti-cancer properties.Cancer patients often exhaust a plethora of resources that ultimately fail to provide fully curative measures.Alternative treatments are subsequently sought in the hope of finding a therapeutic remedy.Potential regimens include aloe-emodin and its related derivatives.This review therefore summarizes the effects of aloe-emodin and other aloe components in light of their anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic properties.Methods:A systematic search was performed in PubMed for aloe-emodin and cancer in humans.Sixty abstracts of in vitro studies were selected and reviewed with subsequent screening of the full text.Thirty-eight articles were summarized.Results:Aloe-emodin possesses multiple anti-proliferative and anti-carcinogenic properties in a host of human cancer cell lines,with often multiple vital pathways affected by the same molecule.The most notable effects include inhibition of cell proliferation,migration,and invasion;cycle arrest;induction of cell death;mitochondrial membrane and redox perturbations;and modulation of immune signaling.The effects of aloe-emodin are not ubiquitous across all cell lines but depend on cell type.Conclusions:On the basis of this systematic review,the multiple consistent effects of aloe-emodin in human-derived cancer cell lines suggest that aloe-emodin is a potential anti-cancer agent that acts on cancer cells in a pleiotropic manner.Relevance for patients:Cancer patients often utilize alternative therapies as a result of suboptimal efficacy of conventional treatments.Aloe-emodin might become a therapeutic option for cancer patients if the basic research is confirmed in clinical trials. | Brian Sanders Anna M.Ray Sharon Goldberg Tyler Clark H.Reginald McDaniel Steven E.Atlas Ashar Farooqi Janet Konefal Lucas C.Lages Johanna Lopez Ammar Rasul Eduard Tiozzo Judi M.Woolger John E.Lewis | 2017 | Journal of Clinical & Translational Research2017,3,3: | 0 |
