Responses of jointed rock masses subjected to impact loading显示文摘Impact-induced damage to jointed rock masses has important consequences in various mining and civil engineering applications. This paper reports a numerical investigation to address the responses of jointed rock masses subjected to impact loading. It also focuses on the static and dynamic properties of an intact rock derived from a series of laboratory tests on meta-sandstone samples from a quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada. A distinct element code(PFC2D) was used to generate a bonded particle model(BPM) to simulate both the static and dynamic properties of the intact rock. The calibrated BPM was then used to construct large-scale jointed rock mass samples by incorporating discrete joint networks of multiple joint intensities into the intact rock matrix represented by the BPM. Finally, the impact-induced damage inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples was determined through the use of the numerical model. The simulation results show that joints play an important role in the impactinduced rock mass damage where higher joint intensity results in more damage to the rock mass. This is mainly attributed to variations of stress wave propagation in jointed rock masses as compared to intact rock devoid of joints.Shabnam Aziznejad Kamran Esmaieli John Hadjigeorgiou Denis Labrie 2018Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2018,10,4:6
Styrene-containing Phosphine-sulfonate Ligands for Nickel-and Palladium-catalyzed Ethylene Polymerization显示文摘A series of phosphine-sulfonate ligands bearing 2-,3-and 4-vinylphenyl on the phosphorus atom were designed, synthesized, characterized and investigated in Ni-and Pd-catalyzed ethylene polymerization. The structure of the phosphine-sulfonate Pd complex bearing 2-vinylphenyl on the phosphorus atom showed 2,1-insertion for the 2-vinyl group. The phosphine-sulfonate Ni complex bearing 2-vinylphenyl resulted in significantly increased thermal stability and polyethylene molecular weights(Mn=3.69×10^(4)g·mol^(-1) at 80℃)versus the counterparts bearing 3-/4-vinyl groups as well as previously reported phosphine-sulfonate Ni complexes bearing bulky biaryl substituents.Shabnam Behzadi Chen Zou Bang-Pei Yang Chen Tan Chang-Le Chen 2021Chinese Journal of Polymer Science2021,39,4:4
Autophagy and the nutritional signaling pathway显示文摘During their growth and development, animals adapt to tremendous changes in order to survive. These include responses to both environmental and physiological changes and autophagy is one of most important adaptive and regulatory mechanisms. Autophagy is defined as an autolytic process to clear damaged cellular organelles and recycle the nutrients via lysosomic degradation. The process of autophagy responds to special conditions such as nutrient withdrawal. Once autophagy is induced, phagophores form and then elongate and curve to form autophagosomes. Autophagosomes then engulf cargo, fuse with endosomes, and finally fuse with lysosomes for maturation. During the initiation process, the ATG1/ULK1(unc-51-like kinase 1) and VPS34(which encodes a class III phosphatidylinositol(Ptd Ins) 3-kinase) complexes are critical in recruitment and assembly of other complexes required for autophagy. The process of autophagy is regulated by autophagy related genes(ATGs). Amino acid and energy starvation mediate autophagy by activating m TORC1(mammalian target of rapamycin) and AMPactivated protein kinase(AMPK). AMPK is the energy status sensor, the core nutrient signaling component and the metabolic kinase of cells. This review mainly focuses on the mechanism of autophagy regulated by nutrient signaling especially for the two important complexes,ULK1 and VPS34.Long HE Shabnam ESLAMFAM Xi MA Defa LI 2016Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering2016,3,3:4
Inequalities in care in patients with acute myocardial infarction显示文摘Coronary heart disease is the single largest cause of death in developed countries. Guidelines exist for the management of acute myocardial infarction(AMI),yet despite these, significant inequalities exist in the care of these patients. The elderly, deprived socioeconomic groups, females and non-caucasians are the patient populations where practice tends to deviate more frequently from the evidence base. Elderly patients often had higher mortality rates after having an AMI compared to younger patients. They also tended to present with symptoms that were not entirely consistent with an AMI,thus partially contributing to the inequalities in care that is seen between younger and older patients. Furthermore the lack of guidelines in the elderly age group presenting with AMI can often make decision making challenging and may account for the discrepancies in care that are prevalent between younger and older patients. Other patients such as those from a lower socioeconomic group,i.e.,low income and less than high school education often had poorer health and reduced life expectancy compared to patients from a higher socioeconomic group after an AMI. Lower socioeconomic status was also seen to be contributing to racial and geographical variation is the care in AMI patients. Females with an AMI were treated less aggressively and had poorer outcomes when compared to males. However even when females were treated in the same way they continued to have higher in hospital mortality which suggests that gender may well account for differences in outcomes. The purpose of this review is to identify the inequalities in care for patients who present with an AMI and explore potential reasons for why these occur. Greater attention to the management and a better understanding of the root causes of these inequalities in care may help to reduce morbidity and mortality rates associated with AMI.Shabnam Rashid Alexander Simms Phillip Batin John Kurian Chris P Gale 2015World Journal of Cardiology2015,7,12:4

Polyaniline Nanofiber Composites with Amines:Novel Materials for Phosgene Detection显示文摘Several orders of magnitude of change in resistance are observed upon chemical doping and dedoping of the conducting polymer polyaniline. This large conductivity range can be utilized to make sensitive chemical sensors.Polyaniline,in its nanofiber form, has even greater sensing capabilities due to the small fiber diameters, high surface area, and porous nanofiber network that enhances gas diffusion into the fibers.Polyaniline nanofibers have been synthesized using a rapid mixing method and dispersed in water allowing them to be easily modified with water soluble agents, making new composite materials.Polyaniline nanofiber composite materials can be used to enhance detection of analytes that unmodified polyaniline would not otherwise be able to detect. The detection mechanism involves the reaction of an additive with the analyte to generate a strong acid that is easily detected by polyaniline, resulting in orders of magnitude changes in resistance. The reaction of the additive alone with the analyte produces no electrical response, however. In this paper,an array of amine-polyaniline nanofiber composite materials is investigated for the detection of phosgene gas.The influence of environmental conditions such as humidity and temperature are examined and a detection mechanism is presented.Shabnam Virji Robert Kojima Jesse D.Fowler Joey G.Villanueva Richard B.Kaner Bruce H.Weiller 2009Nano Research2009,2,2:2
源自水稻壳的高比表面纳米二氧化硅负载12-磷钨酸:一种高效纳米催化剂用于几种有机反应(英文)显示文摘Nano silica was prepared from rice husk with high surface area.X-ray diffraction(XRD) pattern showed that the amorphous form of silica was produced.Chemical composition of the nano silica was estimated by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and CHN analysis. The nano silica was used as a support for H3PW12O40.The nano silica and nano silica supported H3PW12O40 were characterized by inductively coupled plasma,XRD,transmission electron microscopy(TEM),N2 adsorption-desorption,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.TEM images of nano silica as well as the supported catalyst displayed average size of 6 and 7 nm,respectively. The catalyst showed excellent activity in some important organic reactions including Biginelli,Hantzsch,Mannich, and Claisen-Schmidt reactions with good reusability.Catalytic activity of this nano catalyst is an improvement over the commercially available silica that is used to support H3PW12O40.Ezzat RAFIEE Shabnam SHAHEBRAHIMI 2012催化学报2012,33,8:2
An evaluation of central Iran’s protected areas under different climate change scenarios (A Case on Markazi and Hamedan provinces)显示文摘Global climate change poses a new challenge for species and can even push some species toward an extinction vortex. The most affected organisms are those with narrow tolerance to the climatic factors but many large mammals such as ungulates with a wider ecological niche are also being affected indirectly. Our research mainly used wild sheep in central Iran as a model species to explore how the suitable habitats will change under different climatic scenarios and to determine if current borders of protected areas will adequately protect habitat requirements. To create habitat models we used animal-vehicle collision points as an input for species presence data. We ran habitat models using Max Ent modeling approach under different climatic scenarios of the past, present and future(under the climatic scenarios for minimum(RCP2.6) and maximum(RCP8.5) CO2 concentration trajectories). We tried to estimate the overlap and the width of the ecological niche using relevant metrics. In order to analyze the effectiveness of the protected areas, suitable maps were concerted to binary maps using True Skill Statistic(TSS) threshold and measured the similarity of the binary maps for each scenario using Kappa index. In order to assess the competence of the present protected areas boundary in covering the distribution of species, two different scenarios were employed, which are ensemble scenario 1: an ensemble of the binary maps of the species distribution in Mid-Holocene, present, and RCP2.6;and ensemble scenario 2: an ensemble of binary suitability maps in Mid-Holocene, present, and RCP8.5. Then, the borders of modeled habitats with the boundaries of 23 existing protected areas in two central provinces in Iran were compared. The predicted species distribution under scenario 1(RCP2.6) was mostly similar to its current distribution(Kappa = 0.53) while the output model under scenario 2(RCP8.5) indicated a decline in the species distribution range. Under the first ensemble scenario, current borders of the protected areas in Hamedan province showed better efficiency to cover the model species distribution range. Analyzing Max Ent spatial models under the second climatic scenario suggested that protected areas in both Markazi and Hamedan provinces will not cover 'high suitability' areas in the future. Modeling the efficiency of the current protected areas under predicted future climatic scenarios can help the related authorities to plan conservation activities more efficiently.Peyman KARAMI Sahar REZAEI Shabnam SHADLOO Morteza NADERI 2020Journal of Mountain Science2020,17,1:2
Effect of foundation flexibility on ductility reduction factors for R/C stack-like structures显示文摘The most important parameter used to determine force reduction factors in force-based design procedures adopted in the current seismic codes is the structural ductility. For a structure supported on a flexible foundation, the ductility factor could be affected by foundation compliances. The ductility factors given in the current codes are mostly assigned ignoring the effect of SSI and therefore the objective of this research is to assess the signifi cance of SSI phenomenon on ductility factors of stack-like structures. The deformed confi guration of stack-like structures is idealized as an assemblage of beam elements considering nonlinear moment-curvature relations, while a linear sway-rocking model was implemented to model the supporting soil. Using a set of artifi cial records, repeated linear and nonlinear analyses were performed by gradually increasing the intensity of acceleration to a level where the fi rst yielding of steel in linear and nonlinear analyses is observed and a level corresponding to the stack collapse in the nonlinear analysis. The difference between inelastic and elastic resistance in terms of displacement ductility factors has been quantifi ed. The results indicate that foundation flexibility can decrease the ductility of the system and neglecting this phenomenon may lead to erroneous conclusions in the prediction of the seismic performance of flexibly-supported R/C stack-like structures.Amir M.Halabian Shabnam Kabiri 2011Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2011,10,2:2

Regulation of antitumor immunity by inflammation-induced epigenetic alterations显示文摘Chronic inflammation promotes tumor development, progression, and metastatic dissemination and causes treatment resistance. The accumulation of genetic alterations and loss of normal cellular regulatory processes are not only associated with cancer growth and progression but also result in the expression of tumor-specific and tumor-associated antigens that may activate antitumor immunity. This antagonism between inflammation and immunity and the ability of cancer cells to avoid immune detection affect the course of cancer development and treatment outcomes. While inflammation, particularly acute inflammation, supports T-cell priming, activation, and infiltration into infected tissues, chronic inflammation is mostly immunosuppressive. However, the main mechanisms that dictate the outcome of the inflammation-immunity interplay are not well understood.Recent data suggest that inflammation triggers epigenetic alterations in cancer cells and components of the tumor microenvironment. These alterations can affect and modulate numerous aspects of cancer development, including tumor growth, the metabolic state, metastatic spread, immune escape, and immunosuppressive or immunosupportive leukocyte generation. In this review,we discuss the role of inflammation in initiating epigenetic alterations in immune cells,cancer-associated fibroblasts, and cancer cells and suggest how and when epigenetic interventions can be combined with immunotherapies to improve therapeutic outcomes.Michael Karin Shabnam Shalapour 2022Cellular & Molecular Immunology2022,19,1:2

Real-Time Assessment and Diagnosis of Process Operating Performance显示文摘Over time, the performance of processes may deviate from the initial design due to process variations anduncertainties, making it necessary to develop systematic methods for online optimality assessment basedon routine operating process data. Some processes have multiple operating modes caused by the set pointchange of the critical process variables to achieve different product specifications. On the other hand, theoperating region in each operating mode can alter, due to uncertainties. In this paper, we will establish anoptimality assessment framework for processes that typically have multi-mode, multi-region operations,as well as transitions between different modes. The kernel density approach for mode detection is adopt-ed and improved for operating mode detection. For online mode detection, the model-based clusteringdiscriminant analysis (MclustDA) approach is incorporated with some a priori knowledge of the system. Inaddition, multi-modal behavior of steady-state modes is tackled utilizing the mixture probabilistic principalcomponent regression (MPPCR) method, and dynamic principal component regression (DPCR) is used toinvestigate transitions between different modes. Moreover, a probabilistic causality detection method basedon the sequential forward floating search (SFFS) method is introduced for diagnosing poor or non-optimumbehavior. Finally, the proposed method is tested on the Tennessee Eastman (TE) benchmark simulation pro-cess in order to evaluate its performance.Shabnam Sedghi Biao Huang 2017Engineering2017,3,2:1
