| 1 | Serum vitamin D and colonic vitamin D receptor in inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘AIM: To determine serum vitamin D levels and colonic vitamin D receptor(VDR) expression in inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) and non-IBD patients and correlate these with histopathology.METHODS: Puerto Rican IBD(n = 10) and non-IBD(n = 10) patients ≥ 21 years old scheduled for colonoscopy were recruited. Each patient completed a questionnaire and provided a serum sample and a colonic biopsy of normal-appearing mucosa. For IBD patients, an additional biopsy was collected from visually diseased mucosa. Serum vitamin D levels were measured by ultra-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Hematoxylin and eosin stained tissue sections from colonic biopsies were classified histologically as normal or colitis(active/inactive), and scored for the degree of inflammation present(0-3, inactive/absent to severe). Tissue sections from colonic biopsies were also stained by immunohistochemistry for VDR, for which representative diagnostic areas were photographed and scored for staining intensity using a 4-point scale.RESULTS: The IBD cohort was significantly younger(40.40 ± 5.27, P < 0.05) than the non-IBD cohort(56.70 ± 1.64) with a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency(40% vs 20%, respectively) and insufficiency(70% vs 50%, respectively). Histologic inflammation was significantly higher in visually diseased mucosa from IBD patients(1.95 ± 0.25) than in normalappearing mucosa from control patients(0.25 ± 0.08, P < 0.01) and from IBD patients(0.65 ± 0.36, P < 0.05) and correlated inversely with VDR expression in visually diseased colonic tissue from IBD patients(r =-0.44, P < 0.05) and from IBD patients with Crohn's disease(r =-0.69, P < 0.05), but not in normal-appearing colonic tissue from control patients or IBD patients. Control and IBD patient serum vitamin D levels correlated positively with VDR expression in normal colon from control and IBD patients(r = 0.38, P < 0.05) and with patient age(r = 0.54, P < 0.01). | 2 | Low-level laser therapy enhances the number of osteocytes in calvaria bone defects of ovariectomized rats显示文摘Background : Osteoporosis can make bone repair difficult. Low-level laser therapy( LLLT) has been shown to be a promising tool for bone neoformation. This study aimed to analyze the effect of LLLT on calvaria bone defects of ovariectomized rats using stereology. Methods : Fifty-four Wistar rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy, and bone defects were created in calvaria after 150 days. The animals were divided into nine groups(n = ?6 per group), and 24 hours after the bone defects were created they received three, six or 12 sessions of LLLT at 0, 20 or 30 J/cm 2, using a 780-nm low-intensity GaAlAs laser. One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey ' s post hoc test was used for data processing. A difference of P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The parameters evaluated were osteocyte density( Nv_(ost)), total osteocyte number( Nto ost), trabecular surface density( Sv_t), and trabecular surface area( Sa_t). Results : Data obtained showed that Nto ost, Sv t, and Sa t in group G2 rats were significantly different from G1(0 J/cm^2)( P < 0.05). Compared to group G4, G5 presented higher values for the parameters Sv t and Sa t, and G6 presented significantly higher values for almost all the analyzed parameters( Nv _(ost), Nto_(ost), Sv_t, and Sa t)( P < 0.05). Compared to group G7, G8 showed a higher value only for the parameter Sa t, and G9 showed significantly higher values for parameters Nv ost, Nto ost, Sv_t, and Sa_t. | 20 | Passive Heating Systems:A Case Study in a Brazilian Mountainous Region显示文摘The study of thermal comfort in the built environment is of great relevance since it stimulates the development of more sustainable buildings suited to the local climate and able to meet the human need for well-being.The objective of this research was to develop,construct and test a passive heating system adaptable to existing buildings,reducing the need for major interventions and increasing thermal comfort in the indoor environment.The adopted methodological approach was a case study in a single-family residence located in the Brazilian city of Petrópolis,a mountainous region with a humid subtropical climate and a rigorous winter.The proposed passive heating system is totally isolated,thus mitigating air infiltration and promoting increase of temperature in the internal environment through the absorption of solar energy and greenhouse effect.This kind of solution is especially interesting for residents of this region,since most of the city buildings are not adequately prepared to handle low temperatures.Thus,given local climatic conditions,residents need to spend a lot of money on the acquisition and operation of electric or gas heating systems.The results indicated that the developed system,in fact,increased the temperature of the studied room when compared to an adjacent room,which did not receive the device.The findings of this paper,therefore,provide a valuable reference for experts and practitioners in the selection of heating systems to be used in cold regions,and proved that passive systems can provide thermal comfort at the same time that optimize the interaction of the building with the local ecosystem. | Ana Clara L.Pereira Ana Lúcia T.S.da Motta Bruno B.F.da Costa Priscilla C.P.F.de Oliveira Thiago V.Miranda | 2019 | Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture2019，13，11： | 0 |
