| 1 | Biological activities of Solanum pseudocapsicum(Solanaceae)against cotton bollworm,Helicoverpa armigera Hübner and armyworm,Spodoptera litura Fabricius(Lepidotera:Noctuidae)显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibition activities of Solanum pseudocapsicum(S.pseudocapsicum)seed extracts against Spodoptera litura(S.litura)and Helicotverpa armigera(H.armigera).Methods:Hcxane,diethyl cther,dichloromethanc and ethyl acetate seed extracts were prepared and tested for autifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibitory activities against fourth instar larvae of&litura and H.armigera.Results:Ethyl acetate extract showed promising antifeedant and insecticidal activities against S.litura and H.armigera.Percentage of deformed larvae,pupae and adults were maximum in treatment of ethyl acetate extract.Percentage of successful adult emergence was deteriorated by seeds on extract treated larvae.Conclusions:Ethyl acetate extracts of S.pseudocapsicum,showed higher efficiency of antifeedant,insecticidal and growth inhibition activities.Hence,it can be used to controll agricultural insect pests,S.litura and H.armigera. | Alagarmalai Jeyasankar Selvaraj Premalatha Kuppusamy Elumalai | 2012 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,12: | 4 |
| 2 | Cellular metabolic energy modulation by tangeretin in 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene-induced breast cancer显示文摘Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women worldwide.Chemoprevention and chemotherapy play beneficial roles in reducing the incidence and mortality of cancer.Epidemiological and experimental studies showed that naturally-occurring antioxidants present in the diet may act as anticancer agents.Identifying the abnormalities of cellular energy metabolism facilitates early detection and management of breast cancer.The present study evaluated the effect of tangeretin on cellular metabolic energy fluxes in 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene(DMBA)-induced proliferative breast cancer.The results showed that the activities of glycolytic enzymes significantly increased in mammary tissues of DMBA-induced breast cancer bearing rats.The gluconeogenic tricarboxylic acid(TCA) cycle and respiratory chain enzyme activities significantly decreased in breast cancer-bearing rats.In addition,proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) was highly expressed in breast cancer tissues.However,the activities of glycolytic enzymes were significantly normalized in the tangeretin pre- and post-treated rats and the TCA cycle and respiratory chain enzyme activities were significantly increased in tangeretin treated rats.Furthermore,tangeretin down-regulated PCNA expression on breast cancerbearing rats.Our study demonstrates that tangeretin specifically regulates cellular metabolic energy fluxes in DMBA-induced breast cancer-bearing rats. | Kuppusamy Periyasamy Venkatachalam Sivabalan Kuppusamy Baskaran Kannayiram Kasthuri Dhanapal Sakthisekaran | 2016 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2016,30,2: | 3 |
| 3 | Intracellular biosynthesis of Au and Ag nanoparticles using ethanolic extract of Brassica oleracea L. and studies on their physicochemical and biological properties显示文摘In this present study, we reported broccoli(Brassica oleracea L.) as a potential candidate for the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles(NPs) in green chemistry method. The synthesized metal nanoparticles are evaluated their antimicrobial efficacy against different human pathogenic organisms. The physico-chemical properties of gold nanoparticles were analyzed using different analytical techniques such as a UV–Vis spectrophotometer, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and a Fourier Transform Infrared spectrophotometer. In addition, gold and silver NP antimicrobial efficacy was checked by disc diffusion assay. UV–Vis color intensity of the nanoparticles was shown at 540 and 450 nm for gold and silver nanoparticles respectively. Higher magnification of the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy image shows the variable morphology of the gold nanoparticles such as spherical, rod and triangular shapes and silver nanoparticles were seen in spherical shapes. The average spherical size of the particles was observed in 24–38 nm for gold and 30–45 nm for silver NPs. X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the presence of gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles which were crystalline in nature. Additionally,the functional metabolites were identified by the Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. IR spectra revealed phenols, alcohols, aldehydes(sugar moieties), vitamins and proteins are present in the broccoli extract which are accountable to synthesize the nanoparticles. The synthesized gold and silver NPs inhibited the growth of the tested bacterial and fungal pathogens at the concentration of 50 μg/m L respectively. | 4 | Rapunzel syndrome:A rare presentation with multiple small intestinal intussusceptions显示文摘Bezoars are usually confined to the stomach which is seen in individuals with psychiatric illness like trichotillomania,trichophagia and gastric dysmotility.Long standing bezoars may extend into the small intestine leading to a condition known as Rapunzel syndrome.Diagnosis can be established by endoscopy,ultrasonography and computed tomography scan.Treatment includes improvement of general condition and removal of bezoar by laparoscopic approach or laparotomy.Psychiatric consultation is necessary to treat and prevent relapse.We report a case of Rapunzel syndrome in a 16-yearold girl with trichotillomania.She presented with history of epigastric mass for three months and recent onset of pain abdomen,vomiting and early satiety.Skiagram of abdomen was showing distended stomach and endoscopy revealed trichobezoar.At laparotomy,stomach was distended with trichobezoar and there were multiple small intestinal intussusceptions.Gastrotomy and manual reduction of intussusceptions with the removal of trichobezoar with its tail was done.Patient recovered completely after the procedure. | Bidarahalli Krishna Prasanna Kuppusamy Sasikumar Uppinakudru Gurunandan Gubbi Shamanna Sreenath Vikram Kate | 2013 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2013,5,10: | 2 |

| 7 | Larvicidal,ovicidal and pupicidal activities of Gliricidia sepium(Jacq.)(Leguminosae) against the malarial vector,Anopheles stephensi Liston(Culicidae:Diptera)显示文摘Objective:To investigate the potentiality of mosquitocidal activity of Gliricidia sepium(C.sepium) (Jacq.)(Leguminosae).Methods:Twenty five early third instar larvae of Anopheles stephensi (An.stephensi) were exposed to various concentrations(50-250 ppm) and the 24 h LC50 values of the G.sepium extract was determined by probit analysis.The ovicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm under laboratory conditions.The eggs hatchabilily was assessed 48 h post treatment.The pupicidal activity was determined against An.stephensi to various concentrations ranging from 25-100 ppm.Mortality of each pupa was recorded after 24 h of exposure to the extract.Results:Results pertaining to the experiment clearly revealed that ethanol extract showed significant larvicidal,ovicidal and pupicidal activity against the An.stephensi.Larvicidal activity of ethanol extracts of G.sepium showed maximum mortality in 250 ppm concentration(96.0±2.4)%.Furthermore,the LC50 was found to be 121.79 and the LC50 value was recorded to be 231.98 ppm.Ovicidal activity of ethanol extract was assessed by assessing the egg hatchabilily.Highest concentration of both solvent extracts exhibited 100%ovicidal activity.Similarly,pupae exposed to different concentratioiLs of ethanol extract were found dead with 58.10%adult emergence when it was treated with 25 ppm concentration.Similarly,18.36(n=30;61.20%);21.28(70.93) and 27.33(91.10) pupal mortality was recorded from the experimental pupae treated with 50,75 and 100 ppm concentration of extracts.
