Variations in the Lower Level of the PBL Associated with the Yellow Sea Fog-New Observations by L-Band Radar显示文摘The Chinese east coastal areas and marginal seas are foggy regions. The development of effective forecasting methods rests upon a comprehensive knowledge of the fog phenomena. This study provides new observations associated with the sea fogs over the northwestern Yellow Sea by means of L-band radar soundings with a high vertical resolution of 30 m. The monthly temperature lapse rate, the Richardson Numbers, and the humidity show obvious seasonal variations in the lower level of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) that are related to the onset, peak and end of the Yellow Sea fog season. The typical pattern of stratification for the sea fog season in the northwestern Yellow Sea is that a stable layer of about 400 m thick caps a 150 m conditionally unstable layer. Besides, the differences between fogs and stratus clouds in terms of humidity, turbulence and temperature are analyzed, which is of significance for sea fog forecast and detection by satellites. The thickness of the sea fogs varies in different stages of the fog season, and is associated with the temperature inversion. The numerical simulation proves that the seasonal variations obtained by the radar well represent the situations over the Yellow Sea. | ZHANG Suping REN Zhaopeng LIU Jingwu YANG Yuqiang WANG Xingong | 2008 | Journal of Ocean University of China2008,7,4: | 10

Coupling of Hierarchical Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) Nanofibers into 3D Photothermal Aerogels Toward Simultaneous Water Evaporation and Purification显示文摘Serious freshwater shortage and environmental pollution boost the rapid development of solar-driven water production.Although improved evaporation rate has achieved in recent years, undesirable impurity(e.g.,pollutant components)can also be inevitably evaporated and collected as impurity in produced freshwater. This work reports new ultra-light three-dimensional(3D)aerogels assembled by hierarchical Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) nanofibers and reduced graphene oxide(RGO)for excit-ing synchronized solar-driven evaporation and water purification.Hydrophilic Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) fibrous channels linked up the graphene hot-spots and water body for sufficient water supply and bulk water insulation.Meanwhile, featured with thermal insulation effect, the Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) nanofibers effectively locked the converted heat with less energy loss from sunlight. The introducing of Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) nanofibers into RGO aerogel led to the effective interfacial evaporation for a more rapid water evaporation rate(2.19 kg·m−2·h−1,normalized to evaporation area including both top and side surface),which was 36%higher than that of pristine RGO aerogel. Moreover, simultaneous with the strong steam generation,Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) nanofibers in situ removed the pollutants within steam by photodegradation, achieving polluted wastewater purification with high con-taminant removal ratio of 91.3%.Our work on coupling Al_(2)O_(3)/TiO_(2) nanofibers into photothermal aerogel provides attractive solutions for the challenges of clean water scarcity and serious environmental pollution. | Xiangyu Meng Wanlin Xu Zhihui Li Jianhui Yang Jingwu Zhao Xixi Zou Yueming Sun Yunqian Dai | 2020 | Advanced Fiber Materials2020,2,2: | 4

Distribution,Seismic Characteristics and Controlling Factors of Carbonate Platforms on the Northwestern Margin of the South China Sea显示文摘Newly-acquired seismic data reveal widespread carbonate deposits covering a large part of the northwestern South China Sea margin.Three carbonate platforms are identified to have developed on the topographic highs inherited from tectonic deformation and volcanic accretion.Across the carbonate platforms, the Miocene strata are characterized by high-amplitude seismic reflections and distinct platform architecture that overlaps older strata. The Guangle and Xisha carbonate platforms grew on faulted blocks due to South China Sea continental rifting, while the Zhongjian carbonate platform developed on a structural high induced by early Miocene volcanism.During the late Miocene, partial drowning resulted in the inhibition of platform growth, eventual platform drowning and termination of most carbonate deposition. The drowning of the Guangle and Zhongjian carbonate platforms is shown by the supply of siliciclastic sediments during the late Miocene and seems to be closely linked to late Neogene volcanic activity, whilst the drowning of the Xisha carbonate platform is primarily related to relative eustatic changes. Our results imply that tectonic activity, volcanism and eustasy are the dominant controls on the evolution of carbonate platforms on the northwestern margin of the South China Sea. | LI Lin WANG Bin YANG Taotao YANG Zhili LI Li LU Yintao WANG Xuefeng WU Jingwu SUN Guozhong | 2021 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2021,95,1: | 1

Impact of the Pacific–Japan Teleconnection Pattern on July Sea Fog over the Northwestern Pacific: Interannual Variations and Global Warming Effect显示文摘The northwestern Pacific(NWP) is a fog-prone area, especially the ocean east of the Kuril Islands. The present study analyzes how the Pacific–Japan(PJ) teleconnection pattern influences July sea fog in the fog-prone area using independent datasets. The covariation between the PJ index and sea fog frequency(SFF) index in July indicates a close correlation, with a coefficient of 0.62 exceeding the 99% confidence level. Composite analysis based on the PJ index, a case study, and model analysis based on GFDL-ESM2 M, show that in high PJ index years the convection over the east of the Philippines strengthens and then triggers a Rossby wave, which propagates northward to maintain an anticyclonic anomaly in the midlatitudes, indicating a northeastward shift of the NWP subtropical high. The anticyclonic anomaly facilitates the formation of relatively stable atmospheric stratification or even an inversion layer in the lower level of the troposphere, and strengthens the horizontal southerly moisture transportation from the tropical–subtropical oceans to the fog-prone area. On the other hand, a greater meridional SST gradient over the cold flank of the Kuroshio Extension, due to ocean downwelling, is produced by the anticyclonic wind stress anomaly. Both of these two aspects are favorable for the warm and humid air to cool, condense, and form fog droplets, when air masses cross the SST front. The opposite circumstances occur in low PJ index years, which are not conducive to the formation of sea fog. Finally, a multi-model ensemble mean projection reveals a prominent downward trend of the PJ index after the 2030 s, implying a possible decline of the SFF in this period. | Jingchao LONG Suping ZHANG Yang CHEN Jingwu LIU Geng HAN | 2016 | Advances in Atmospheric Sciences2016,33,4: | 1

Potential Effects of Some Environmental Factors on a Dinoflagellate Red Tide Caused by Gymnodinium catenatum in Shenhu Bay in 2017显示文摘In this study, some environmental factors were investigated to assess the potential effects on the dynamics of a dinoflagellate red tide caused by Gymnodinium catenatum in Shenhu Bay coastal waters in June, 2017. The highest cell density of G. catenatum was 1.0×10 6 cells/L, so it was known as the predominant species of the red tide discovered in Fujian coastal waters for the first time. Continuous rainfall process brought many land-based pollutants into the coastal waters, providing abundant nutrients for plankton growth. Then the continuous sunny and hot weather, high temperature, high salinity and south wind conditions accelerated the formation and occurrence of the red tide. During the red tide, DO, pH and COD increased remarkably and had significant positive correlations with the cell density of the red tide organisms. The contents of various nutrients decreased obviously, and eutrophication index E became low before and after the red tide, indicating the oligotrophic status of Shenhu Bay coastal waters. It is also found that DIP was one of the determinant environmental factors that induced the red tide. The N/P ratio of water in the declining phase of the red tide was close to the Redfield ratio. As for DIN, NH + 4-N and NO - 3-N were the two main species of inorganic nitrogen needed for this red tide dinoflagellate. The study indicates the relationship between the occurrence of the red tide and environmental conditions, providing essential reference for monitoring and forecasting research of red tide in marine environment and ecosystem management. | Zheng Chongrong Li Guangyi Chen Jingwu Liu Baoqing Yang Fan Yao Rui | 2019 | Meteorological and Environmental Research2019,10,4: | 1
Underground Disease Detection Based on Cloud Computing and Attention Region Neural Network显示文摘Detecting the underground disease is very crucial for the roadbed health monitoring and maintenance of transport facilities, since it is very closely related to the structural health and reliability with the rapid development of road traffic.Ground penetrating radar(GPR)is widely used to detect road and underground diseases. However,it is still a challenging task due to data access anywhere, transmission security and data processing on cloud.Cloud computing can provide scalable and powerful technologies for large-scale storage, processing and dissemination of GPR data.Combined with cloud computing and radar detection technology,it is possible to locate the underground disease quickly and accurately. This paper deploys the framework of a ground disease detection system based on cloud computing and proposes an attention region convolution neural network for object detection in the GPR images.Experimental results of the precision and recall metrics show that the proposed approach is more efficient than traditional objection detection method in ground disease detection of cloud based system. | Pinjie Xu Ce Li Liguo Zhang Feng Yang Jing Zheng Jingwu Feng | 2019 | Journal on Artificial Intelligence2019,1,1: | 0
A buried submarine canyon in the northwest South China Sea:architecture, development processes and implications for hydrocarbon exploration显示文摘High-resolution multichannel seismic data enables the discovery of a previous, undocumented submarine canyon(Huaguang Canyon)in the Qiongdongnan Basin, northwest South China Sea.The Huaguang Canyon with a NW orientation is 140 km in length, and 2.5 km to 5 km in width in its upper reach and 4.6 km to 9.5 km in width in its lower reach. The head of the Huaguang Canyon is close to the Xisha carbonate platform and its tail is adjacent to the central canyon. This buried submarine canyon is formed by gravity flows from the Xisha carbonate platform when the sea level dropped in the early stage of the late Miocene(~10.5 Ma).The internal architecture of the Huaguang Canyon is mainly characterized by high amplitude reflections, indicating that this ancient submarine canyon was filled with coarse-grained sediments. The sediment was principally scourced from the Xisha carbonate platform. In contrast to other buried large-scale submarine canyons(central canyon and Zhongjian Canyon)in the Qiongdongnan Basin, the Huaguang Canyon displays later formation time, smaller width and length, and single sediment supply. The coarse-grained deposits within Huaguang Canyon provide a good environment for reserving oil and gas,and the muddy fillings in Huaguang Canyon have been identified as regional caps. Therefore,Huaguang Canyon is potential area for future hydrocarbon exploration in the northwest South China Sea.Our results may contribute to a better understanding of the evolution of submarine canyons formed in carbonate environment. | Bin Wang Fuliang Lyu Shuang Li Jian Li Zhili Yang Li Li Xuefeng Wang Yintao Lu Taotao Yang Jingwu Wu Guozhong Sun Hongxia Ma Xiaoyong Xu | 2021 | Acta Oceanologica Sinica2021,40,3: | 0
