Neural mechanism of acupuncture-modulated gastric motility显示文摘AIM: To investigate the acupuncture-modulated gastric motility and its underlying neural mechanism.METHODS: Intragastric pressure and/or waves of gastric contraction in rats were recorded by intrapyloric balloon and changes of gastric motility induced by acupuncture stimulation were compared with the background activity before any stimulation. Gastro-vagal or splanchnic-sympathetic nerves were recorded or cut respectively for investigating the involvement of autonomic nerve pathways. Spinalization experiment was also performed.RESULTS: Acupuncture-stimulation by exciting Aδ and/or C afferent fibers, could only modulate gastric motility. Acupuncture-stimulation on fore- and hind-limbs evoked a moderate gastric motility followed by increased vagus discharges with unchanged sympathetic activity, while the same stimulus to the acupoints in abdomen resulted in reversed effects on gastric motility and autonomic nervous activities. The inhibitory gastric response was completely abolished by splanchnic denervation, but the facilitative gastric response to stimulation of acupoints in limbs was not influenced, which was opposite to the effect when vagotomy was performed. The similar depressive effects were produced by the stimulation at the acupoints homo-segmental to the gastric innervation in the animals with or without spinalization. However, the facilitation induced by the stimulation at the acupoints hetero-segmental to the gastric innervation was not observed in the spinalized animals.CONCLUSION: Facilitative effects of stimulating hetero-segmental acupoints are involved in the intact preparation of vagal nerves and spinal cord, while the inhibitory response induced by stimulating homo-segmental acupoints is involved in the intact preparation of sympathetic nerves. Only the acupuncture-stimulation with intensity over the threshold of Aδ and/or C afferent fibers can markedly modulate gastrointestinal motility. | Yu-Qing Li Bing Zhu Pei-Jing Rong Hui Ben Yan-Hua Li | 2007 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,5: | 41
Standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection in China: A meta-analysis显示文摘AIM:To assess the efficacy and safety of standard triple therapy compared with other pre-existing and new therapies in China.METHODS:Literature searches were conducted in the following databases:PubMed,EMBASE,the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the VIP database, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, and the Chinese Biomedical Database.A meta-analysis of all randomized controlled trials(RCTs)comparing standard triple therapy for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori with pre-existing and new therapies in China was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 2.0.There were 49 studies that met our criteria and the qualities of these studies were assessed using the Jadad scale. The Mantel-Haenszel method was used for pooling dichotomous data.We also conducted subgroupanalyses according to age, duration of treatment and drug type.Sensitivity analyses and a cumulative metaanalysis were also performed with CMA 2.0.Publication bias was evaluated using Egger’s test,Begg’s test or a funnel plot.RESULTS:A total of 49 RCTs including 8332 patients were assessed. This meta-analysis showed that standard triple therapy with proton pump inhibitors(PPIs),amoxicillin(AMO)and clarithromycin(CLA)was inferior to sequential therapy[relative risk(RR)=0.863;95%confidence interval(CI):0.824-0.904],but was not superior to quadruple therapy(RR=1.073;95%CI:0.849-1.357)or other triple therapies(RR=1.01;95%CI:0.936-1.089).The meta-analysis also suggested that standard triple therapy is slightly more effective than dual therapy(RR=1.14;95%CI:0.99-1.31).However,the differences were not statistically significant. We removed the only trial with a regimen lasting14 d by sensitivity analysis and found that 7-d standard triple therapy was superior to 7-d dual therapy(RR=1.222;95%CI:1.021-1.461).Moreover,a sub-analysis based on the duration of quadruple therapy indicated that the 7-d and 10-d standard triple therapies were inferior to sequential therapy(RR=0.790;95%CI:0.718-0.868;RR=0.917;95%CI:0.839-1.002,respectively).Additionally,there were no significant differences in cure rate or adverse events among standard triple therapy, quadruple therapy, and other triple therapies(RR=0.940;95%CI:0.825-1.072;RR=1.081;95%CI:0.848-1.378,respectively).Standard triple therapy had a higher occurrence of side effects than sequential therapy(RR=1.283;95%CI:1.066-1.544).CONCLUSION:The eradication rates with a standard triple therapy consisting of PPI,AMO,and CLA are suboptimal in China, and new treatment agents need to be developed. | Ben Wang Zhi-Fa Lv You-Hua Wang Hui Wang Xiao-Qun Liu Yong Xie Xiao-Jiang Zhou | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,40: | 46
Effective regularity in modulation on gastric motility induced by different acupoint stimulation显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether manual acupuncture at representative acupoints in different parts of the body can modulate responses of gastric motility in rats and regular effects in different acupoint stimulation.METHODS: The gastric motor activity of rats was recorded by the intrapyloric balloon. The changes of gastric motility induced by the stimulation were compared with the background activity in intragastric pressure and/or waves of gastric contraction recorded before any stimulation. Morphological study was also conducted by observing the Evans dye extravasation in the skin after mustard oil injection into the intragastric mucous membrane to certify cutaneous innervations of blue dots related to gastric segmental innervations. RESULTS: In all six rats that received mustard oil injections into intragastric mucosa, small blue dots appeared in the skin over the whole abdomen, but mainly in peri-midline upper- and middle- abdomen and middle-back, a few in thigh and groin. It may speculate that cutaneous innervations of blue dots have the same distribution as gastric segmental innervations. Acu-stimulation in acupoints of head-neck, four limbs, upper chest-dorsum and lower-dorsum induced markedly augmentation of gastric motility (acupoints on head-neck such as St-2: n = 16, 105.19 ± 1.36 vs 112.25 ± 2.02 and St-3: n = 14, 101.5 ± 1.75 vs 109.36 ± 1.8; acupoints on limbs such as Sp-6: n = 19, 100.74 ± 1.54 vs 110.26 ± 3.88; St-32: n = 17, 103.59 ± 1.64 vs 108.24 ± 2.41; St-36: n = 16, 104.81 ± 1.72 vs 110.81 ± 2.74 and Li-11: n = 17, 106.47 ± 2.61 vs 114.77 ±3.77, P < 0.05-0.001). Vigorous inhibitory regulations of gastric motility induced by acu-stimulation applied in acupoints on whole abdomen and middle-dorsum were significantly different as compared with the controls before acu-stimulation (abdomen acupoints such as Cv-12: n = 11, 109.36 ± 2.09 vs 101 ± 2.21; Cv-6: n = 18, 104.39 ± 1.42 vs 91.83 ± 3.22 and St-21: n = 12, 107 ± 2.97 vs 98.58 ± 2.81; acupoints on middle-dorsum such as Bl-17: n = 19, 100.63 ± 1.4 vs 92.21 ± 2.07 and Bl-21: n = 19, 103.84 ± 1.48 vs 97.58 ± 2.16, P < 0.05-0.001).CONCLUSION: Regular regulatory effects of facilitation and inhibition on gastric motility appear to be somatotopically organized in the acupoints of whole body, and the effective regularity of site-special acupoints on gastric motility is involved in segmental innervations between stomach and acupoints. | Yu-Qing Li Bing Zhu Pei-Jing Rong Hui Ben Yan-Hua Li | 2006 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,47: | 25
Privacy Computing: Concept, Computing Framework, and Future Development Trends显示文摘With the rapid development of information technology and the continuous evolution of personalized ser- vices, huge amounts of data are accumulated by large internet companies in the process of serving users. Moreover, dynamic data interactions increase the intentional/unintentional persistence of private infor- mation in different information systems. However, problems such as the cask principle of preserving pri- vate information among different information systems and the dif culty of tracing the source of privacy violations are becoming increasingly serious. Therefore, existing privacy-preserving schemes cannot pro- vide systematic privacy preservation. In this paper, we examine the links of the information life-cycle, such as information collection, storage, processing, distribution, and destruction. We then propose a the- ory of privacy computing and a key technology system that includes a privacy computing framework, a formal de nition of privacy computing, four principles that should be followed in privacy computing, ffect algorithm design criteria, evaluation of the privacy-preserving effect, and a privacy computing language. Finally, we employ four application scenarios to describe the universal application of privacy computing, and discuss the prospect of future research trends. This work is expected to guide theoretical research on user privacy preservation within open environments. | Fenghua Li Hui Li Ben Niu Jinjun Chen | 2019 | Engineering2019,5,6: | 21

Extracellular vesicles from human urine-derived stem cells prevent osteoporosis by transferring CTHRC1 and OPG显示文摘Osteoporosis is a debilitating bone disease affecting millions of people. Here, we used human urine-derived stem cells(USCs),which were noninvasively harvested from unlimited and easily available urine, as a 'factory' to obtain extracellular vesicles(USCEVs) and demonstrated that the systemic injection of USC-EVs effectively alleviates bone loss and maintains bone strength in osteoporotic mice by enhancing osteoblastic bone formation and suppressing osteoclastic bone resorption. More importantly, the anti-osteoporotic properties of USC-EVs are not notably disrupted by the age, gender, or health condition(with or without osteoporosis) of the USC donor. Mechanistic studies determined that collagen triple-helix repeat containing 1(CTHRC1) and osteoprotegerin(OPG) proteins are enriched in USC-EVs and required for USC-EV-induced pro-osteogenic and anti-osteoclastic effects. Our results suggest that autologous USC-EVs represent a promising novel therapeutic agent for osteoporosis by promoting osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis by transferring CTHRC1 and OPG. | Chun-Yuan Chen Shan-Shan Rao Yi-Juan Tan Ming-Jie Luo Xiong-Ke Hu Hao Yin Jie Huang Yin Hu Zhong-Wei Luo Zheng-Zhao Liu Zhen-Xing Wang Jia Cao Yi-Wei Liu Hong-Ming Li Yang Chen Wei Du Jiang-Hua Liu Yan Zhang Tuan-Hui Chen Hao-Ming Liu Ben Wu Tao Yue Yi-Yi Wang Kun Xia Peng-Fei Lei Si-Yuan Tang Hui Xie | 2019 | Bone Research2019,7,3: | 14
Class A scavenger receptor activation inhibits endoplasmic reticulum stress-induced autophagy in macrophage显示文摘Macrophage death in advanced atherosclerosis promotes plaque necrosis and destabilization.Involvement of autophagy in bulk degradation of cellular components has been recognized recently as an important mechanism for cell survival under endoplasmic reticulum(ER) stress. We previously found that the engagement of class A scavenger receptor(SR-A) triggered JNK-dependent apoptosis in ER-stressed macrophages.However,pro-apoptotic mechanisms mediated by SR-A are not fully understood. Therefore,we sought to see if SR-A mediated apoptosis was associated with autophagy in macrophages. Here,we showed that fucoidan inhibited microtubule-associated protein light chain 3-phospholipid conjugates(LC3-Ⅱ) formation as well as the number of autophagosomes under ER stress. The inhibition of LC3-Ⅱ formation was paralleled by the activation of the mTOR pathway, and the inhibition of mTOR allowed LC3-Ⅱ induction in macrophages treated with thapsigargin plus fucoidan.Furthermore, apoptosis induced by fucoidan was prevented under ER stress by the mTOR inhibitor. We propose that fucoidan,a SR-A agonist, may contribute to macrophage apoptosis during ER stress by inhibiting autophagy. | Hanpeng Huang Xiaoyu Li Yan Zhuang Nan Li Xudong Zhu Jin Hu Jingjing Ben Qing Yang Hui Bai Qi Chen | 2014 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2014,28,3: | 9
Mechanism of acupuncture regulating visceral sensation and mobility显示文摘Chinese ancient medical scientists have long focused on the internal and external contacts between acupoints on the surface of the body and the viscera. The Miraculous Pivot(it is one of the earliest medical classics in China)stated,“Twelve regular channels belong to the zang-fu organs internally, and connect to the extremities and joints externally.”Traditional Chinese medicine considers acupoints as defined areas where the Qi of viscera and meridians are transfused. These include the reaction points of visceral diseases on the body surface as well as the acupuncture trigger points that promote the flow of Qi and blood, and regulate visceral function.Chinese ancient medical scientists classified the specificity of the main acupoints in the body based on the meridian doctrine, which has been instructing clinical application for about 2000 years.Laws on the domino effect of acupoints have mainly focused on conclusions to clinical experiences.Indications of some acupoints exceed the practical paradigm since the excessive extension occurred during theory derivation. The current research direction on acupuncture focuses on three aspects:the effectiveness of acupuncture and moxibustion;the relevances and associations between meridians and viscera;and the physical and chemical properties and relevant physical basis of acupoints. The relevance between meridians and viscera is the central theory in the meridian doctrine, and acupoints are regarded as an important link in the relationship between meridians and viscera.Specific relationships between acupoints and target organs exist.Stimulating different acupoints on the body surface can help deal with different diseases, especially visceral diseases. In addition, acupoints have a dual function of reflecting and treating visceral diseases. There is no systemic research available on acupoint specificity, despite current knowledge and clinical experiences, which results in a weak foundation for acupuncture theory. This study focuses on the relevance and associations between meridians and viscera.A summary of the mechanisms of acupuncture regulating visceral sensation and mobility and the specific relationships between acupoints and their target organs are presented in this review. | Peijing Rong Bing Zhu Yuqing Li Xinyan Gao Hui Ben Yanhua Li Liang Li Wei He Rupeng Liu Lingling Yu | 2011 | Frontiers of Medicine2011,5,2: | 8
Detection of the critical micelle concentration of cationic and anionic surfactants based on aggregation-induced emission property of hexaphenylsilole derivatives显示文摘We report a fluorescence 'turn-on' method to detect the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of surfactants. This method works well for both cationic and anionic surfactants. It employs an unprecedented mechanism (aggregation-induced emission, or AIE) to determine the CMC values, and the results are consistent with the data obtained by the classical techniques. In addition, this method renders the convenient detection of the CMC values. Any large and professional instruments are unnecessary, instead, a portable UV lamp and an ultrasonic generator are enough to carry out the detection in an ordinary laboratory. Considering that micelles are interesting entities and have found applications in many important fields such as emulsion polymerization, template of nanosized materials synthesis, controllable drug delivery and macromolecular self-assembling. Our experimental results may offer a facile, sensitive and promising method to detect the formation of micelles constructed by the new amphiphilic molecules and macromolecules. | TANG Li JIN JiaKe ZHANG Shuang MAO Yu SUN JingZhi YUAN WangZhang ZHAO Hui XU HaiPeng QIN AnJun TANG Ben Zhong | 2009 | Science China Chemistry2009,52,6: | 6
Effect of manual acupuncture on bowel motility in normal kunming mouse显示文摘OBJECTIVE:To observe the effects of acupuncture on motility of jejunum and distal colon at different acupoints on normal Kunming mice.METHODS:The jejunal and colorectal motor activity of forty Kunming mice were recorded by the intra-intestinal capsule. The capsules contained with distilled water were placed into the cavities of jejunum and distal colon. The changes of bowel were compared with the background activity recorded before any stimulation. The chosen acupoints were as follows:Zusanli(ST 36) on the lower legs,Tianshu(ST 25) on the mid-lower abdomen.RESULTS:Manual acupuncture(MA) at Zusanli(ST36) significantly promoted the motility of jejunum and distal colon(manifested as increased change rate of average amplitude and increased change rate of mean area under the contractile curve) of normal Kunming mice(P < 0.01).MA atTianshu(ST25) significantly inhibited the motility of jejunum(manifested as decreased change rate of average amplitude, decreased change rate of mean area under the contractile curve, and the reduced frequency) of normal Kunming mice(P < 0.01),while significantly increased the distal colonic motility(manifested as increased amplitude and increased mean area under the contractile curve) of normal Kunming mice(P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:MA at specific acupoints[Zusanli(ST 36),Tianshu(ST 25)]has different effects on the motility of jejunum and distal colon, which might involve the segmental innervations of the related nerve. | Zhao Yuxue Cui Changxiang Qin Qingguang Ben Hui Gao Junhong Yu Xiaochun Zhu Bing | 2015 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2015,35,2: | 5
Effect of industrial microwave irradiation on the physicochemical properties and pyrolysis characteristics of lignite显示文摘The surface functional groups and pyrolysis characteristics of lignite irradiated by microwave were comparatively studied to evaluate the feasibility of using industrial 915 MHz for lignite drying. The drying kinetics, micro structure, chemical functional groups, re-adsorption properties, and pyrolysis characteristics of the dried coal were respectively analyzed. Results indicated that for typical Chinese lignite studied in this paper, 915 MHz microwave drying was 7.8 times faster than that of the hot air drying. After industrial microwave drying, the sample possessed much higher total specific surface area and specific pore volume than that of air dried sample. The oxygen functional groups and re-adsorption ratio of microwave irradiated coal decreased, showing weakened hydrophilicity. Moreover, during the pyrolysis of the coal dried by hot air and microwave, the yield of tar largely increased from 1.3% to 8.5% and the gas production increased correspondingly. The composition of the tar was also furtherly analyzed, results indicated that Miscellaneous hydrocarbons(HCs) were the main component of the tar, and microwave irradiation can reduce the fraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) from 26.4% to 22.7%. | Guoshun Zhou Qunxing Huang Ben Yu Hui Tong Yong Chi Jianhua Yan | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,5: | 4
Excellent Electrochemical Performances of Intrinsic Polyaniline Nanofibers Fabricated by Electrochemical Deposition显示文摘A simple route to synthesize the polyaniline(PANI) nanofibers with diameter about 150 nm was reported. In this strategy, the PANI nanofibers were fabricated by electrochemical deposition by using two-electrode configuration in 0.01 M aniline and 0.01 M H_2SO_4 electrolytes. The as-prepared materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA). The electrochemical properties of the PANI nanofibers electrode as supercapacitor materials were investigated. The PANI nanofibers electrode showed high capacitance of 485 F·g^(-1)at 0.1 A·g^(-1), and the decrease in the specific capacitance is about 3.5% in 1 000 cycles. The results indicate that the PANI nanofibers electrode shows high stability and retains its electrochemical capacitance property over 1 000 cycles, suggesting PANI nanofibers have promising applications in high-performance supercapacitors. | 陈韶云 LIU Ben WANG Yuan CHENG Huan ZHANG Xingying XU Shaoqin LIU Hui LIU Wenfeng 胡成龙 | 2019 | Journal of Wuhan University of Technology(Materials Science)2019,34,1: | 2
Increased Expression of Colonic Mucosal Melatonin in Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome Correlated with Gut Dysbiosis显示文摘Dysregulation of the gut microbiota/gut hormone axis contributes to the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).Melatonin plays a beneficial role in gut motility and immunity. However, altered expression of local mucosal melatonin in IBS and its relationship with the gut microbiota remain unclear. Therefore,we aimed to detect the colonic melatonin levels and microbiota profiles in patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS(IBS-D)and explore their relationship in germ-free(GF)rats and BON-1 cells.Thirty-two IBS-D patients and twenty-eight healthy controls(HCs)were recruited.Fecal specimens from IBS-D patients and HCs were separately transplanted into GF rats by gavage. The levels of colon mucosal melatonin were assessed by immunohistochemical methods, and fecal microbiota communities were analyzed using 16S rDNA sequencing. The effect of butyrate on melatonin synthesis in BON-1 cells was evaluated by ELISA.Melatonin levels were significantly increased and negatively correlated with visceral hypersensitivity in IBS-D patients.GF rats inoculated with fecal microbiota from IBS-D patients had high colonic melatonin levels.Butyrate-producing Clostridium cluster XIVa species, such as Roseburia species and Lachnospira species, were positively related to colonic mucosal melatonin expression.Butyrate significantly increased melatonin secretion in BON-1 cells.Increased melatonin expression may be an adaptive protective mechanism in the development of IBS-D.Moreover,some Clostridium cluster XIVa species could increase melatonin expression via butyrate production.Modulation of the gut hormone/gut microbiota axis offers a promising target of interest for IBS in the future. | Ben Wang Shiwei Zhu Zuojing Liu Hui Wei Lu Zhang Meibo He Fei Pei Jindong Zhang Qinghua Sun Liping Duan | 2020 | Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics2020,18,6: | 2
GRP78 inhibits macrophage adhesion via SR-A显示文摘Class A scavenger receptor(SR-A)plays an important role in macrophage adhesion. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We previously found that 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein(GRP78)inhibited SRA-mediated ligand internalization into macrophage by binding to SR-A.The aim of the study was to investigate whether GRP78 could regulate SR-A-mediated cell adhesion. We demonstrated that GRP78 bound directly to SR-A by fluorescence resonance energy transfer(FRET)assay.Overexpression of GRP78 inhibited macrophage adhesion via SR-A.These results suggest that GRP78 may act as an inhibitor of macrophage adhesion via SR-A. | Hui Bai Nan Li Xiaodan Zhou Chenchen Wang Yan Zhang Xudong Zhu Min Huang Yaoyu Chen Xiaoyu Li Qing Yang Chaojun Li Jingjing Ben Qi Chen | 2014 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2014,28,4: | 2
Study on Syntheses and Characterizations of Polymethylphenethylsilane, Polymethylcyclohexylsilane and their Copolymers显示文摘The effects of adding cosolvents of diglyme and 15 crown 5 to the reaction mixture of Wurtz type coupling of dichlorosilanes on the yield and relative molecular mass dispersity of polymethylphenethylsilane(PMPES) were discussed. The results show that addition of 10% (volume ratio of diglyme to toluene) diglyme as a cosolvent to the reaction mixture leads to the yield increase of PMPES with a monomodal distribution of relative molecular masses. Adding 10% diglyme to the reaction mixtures, the yields of polymethylcyclohexylsilane(PMCS) and copolymers (polymethylphenethylsilane co methylcyclohexylsilane), (the molar ratios of methylphenethyldichlorosilane to methylcyclohexyldichlorosilane were 2.0, 1.0 and 0.5, and the copolymers were abbreviated by Copolymers Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ, respectively) are 47%, 52%, 54%, 53%, respectively. | 16 | Revealing complex optical phenomena through vectorial metrics显示文摘Advances in vectorial polarization-resolved imaging are bringing new capabilities to applications ranging from fundamental physics through to clinical diagnosis.Imaging polarimetry requires determination of the Mueller matrix(MM)at every point, providing a complete description of an object’s vectorial properties.Despite forming a comprehensive representation, the MM does not usually provide easily interpretable information about the object’s internal structure.Certain simpler vectorial metrics are derived from subsets of the MM elements. These metrics permit extraction of signatures that provide direct indicators of hidden optical properties of complex systems, while featuring an intriguing asymmetry about what information can or cannot be inferred via these metrics. We harness such characteristics to reveal the spin Hall effect of light, infer microscopic structure within laser-written photonic waveguides, and conduct rapid pathological diagnosis through analysis of healthy and cancerous tissue. This provides new insight for the broader usage of such asymmetric inferred vectorial information. | Chao He Jintao Chang Patrick S.Salter Yuanxing Shen Ben Dai Pengcheng Li Yihan Jin Samlan Chandran Thodik Mengmeng Li Aziz Tariq Jingyu Wang Jacopo Antonello Yang Dong Ji Qi Jianyu Lin Daniel S.Elson Min Zhang Honghui He Hui Ma Martin J.Booth | 2022 | Advanced Photonics2022,4,2: | 2
Review of controlled clinical trials on acupuncture versus sham acupuncture in Germany显示文摘OBJECTIVE: To examine German controlled clinical trials on the therapeutic effects of acupuncture vs sham acupuncture, and to find whether there are problems with the conclusion that sham acupuncture has no significant deviation from acupuncture. METHODS: We focused on literature from the last ten years (2002-2011) included in PubMed about controlled clinical trials on acupuncture vs sham acupuncture carried out in Germany. The methods applied in sham acupuncture are summarized, and the difference between the acupuncture and sham groups were analyzed. We measured effects based on the following criteria: acupuncture is effective and superior to sham, acupuncture is effective but similar to sham, both of them have uncertainty regarding treatment effect, or no significant effect. Finally, we reviewed the hypotheses of different scholars on sham acupuncture and analyzed their results.RESULTS: Four types of controlled clinical trials including sham acupuncture on non-Traditional Chinese Medicine acupoints, minimal acupuncture on non-acupoints, placebo needle and sham laser acupuncture had varying results in the 57 articles analyzed. Some showed that acupuncture had a better effect than sham, while some suggest acupuncture and sham had similar effects. In all studies using sham acupuncture on non-therapeutic points, sham electrodes, and sham electro-acupuncture, the therapeutic effect was better than sham. Of the trials, 37 demonstrated that acupuncture had a better effect than sham acupuncture. Only nine trials found no significant difference between acupuncture and sham. Two controlled trials for the same condition (neck pain) conducted by two different German research institutes used the same control method, but reached contradictory conclusions. CONCLUSION: We found problems in conclusions based on results of controlled clinical trials of sham acupuncture in Germany. Therefore, there is still not enough evidence to support the statements that 'acupuncture and sham acupuncture have no difference in treatment effect' and 'acupuncture is just a placebo effect.' The control methods of sham acupuncture used in Germany may not be standardized and may not be suitable for acupuncture clinical trial research. We suggest that research on the methodology of sham acupuncture should be given priority in the design of acupuncture trials in the future. | Wei He Yuanyuan Tong Yingkai Zhao Li Zhang Hui Ben Qingguang Qin Feng Huang Peijing Rong | 2013 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2013,33,3: | 2
