1In vitro antibacterial effect of aqueous and ethanolic Moringa leaf extracts显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antibacterial effect of aqueous and ethanolic moringa leaf extracts (Moringa oleifera) on the growth of gram-positive and negative bacteria.Methods:Paper disks were soaked with 100,200,300 and 400μL of extract at 20 g/180mL and 10 g/190 mL.All extracts were tested against Escherichia coli(ATCC25922),Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC25923),Vibrio parahaemolyticus,Enterococcus faecalis(ATCC29212),Pseudomonas aeruginosa(ATCC27853), Salmonella enteritidis(IH) and Aeromonas caviae.The susceptibility tests were performed using the modified disk diffusion method.Results:The strains E.coli,P.aeruginosa and S.enteritidis (IH) were resistant to all treatments.In general,disks with 400μL extract were the most efficient against S.aureus,V.parahaemolyticus,E.faecalis and A.caviae.Conclusions:The study indicates a promising potential for aqueous and ethanolic Moringa leaf extracts as alternative treatment of infections caused by the tested strains.Jackson Rafael Oliveira Peixoto Giselle Cristina Silva Renata Albuquerque Costa Joseires Lira de Sousa Fontenelle Gustavo Hitzschky Fernandes Vieira Antonio Adauto Fonteles Filho Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes Vieira 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,3:7
2Siderophore-Producing Rhizobacteria as a Promising Tool for Empowering Plants to Cope with Iron Limitation in Saline Soils:A Review显示文摘Iron(Fe) bioavailability to plants is reduced in saline soils;however, the exact mechanisms underlying this effect are not yet completely understood. Siderophore-expressing rhizobacteria may represent a promising alternative to chemical fertilizers by simultaneously tackling salt-stress effects and Fe limitation in saline soils. In addition to draught, plants growing in arid soils face two other major challenges: high salinity and Fe deficiency. Salinity attenuates growth, affects plant physiology, and causes nutrient imbalance,which is, in fact, one of the major consequences of saline stress. Iron is a micronutrient essential for plant development, and it is required by several metalloenzymes involved in photosynthesis and respiration. Iron deficiency is associated with chlorosis and low crop productivity. The role of microbial siderophores in Fe supply to plants and the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) on the mitigation of saline stress in crop culture are well documented. However, the dual effect of siderophore-producing PGPR, both on salt stress and Fe limitation, is still poorly explored. This review provides a critical overview of the combined effects of Fe limitation and soil salinization as challenges to modern agriculture and intends to summarize some indirect evidence that argues in favour of siderophore-producing PGPR as biofertilization agents in salinized soils. 4From regenerative strategies to pharmacological approaches:can we fine-tune treatment for Parkinson's disease?显示文摘Parkinson's disease is the second most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder worldwide.Clinically,it is characterized by severe motor complications caused by progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons.Current treatment is focused on mitigating the symptoms through the administration of levodopa,rather than on preventing dopaminergic neuronal damage.Therefore,the use and development of neuroprotective/disease-modifying strategies is an absolute need that can lead to promising gains on translational research of Parkinson's disease.For instance,N-acetylcysteine,a natural compound with strong antioxidant effects,has been shown to modulate oxidative stress,preventing dopamine-induced cell death.Despite the evidence of neuroprotective and modulatory effects of this drug,as far as we know,it does not induce per se any regenerative process.Therefore,it would be of interest to combine the latter with innovative therapies that induce dopaminergic neurons repair or even differentiation,as stem cell-based strategies.Stem cells secretome has been proposed as a promising therapeutic approach for Parkinson's disease,given its ability to modulate cell viability/preservation of dopaminergic neurons.Such approach represents a shift in the paradigm,showing that cell-transplantation free therapies based on the use of stem cells secretome may represent a potential alternative for regenerative medicine of Parkinson's disease.Thus,in this review,we address the current understanding of the potential combination of stem cell free-based strategies and neuroprotective/disease-modifying strategies as a new paradigm for the treatment of central nervous system neurodegenerative diseases,like Parkinson's disease.Rita Caridade Silva Helena Sofia Domingues António J.Salgado Fábio G.Teixeira 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,5:2

16Bioactive extracts of red seaweeds Pterocladiella capillacea and Osmundaria obtusiloba(Floridophyceae:Rhodophyta) with antioxidant and bacterial agglutination potential显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the antioxidant,antibacterial and bacterial cell agglutination activities of the hexane(Hex) and 70%ethanol(70%EtOH) extracts of two species of red seaweeds Pterocladiella capillacea(P.capillacea) and Osmundaria obtusiloba.Methods:In vitro antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical scavenging assay,ferric-reducing antioxidant power assay,ferrous ion chelating assay,β-carotene bleaching assay and total phenolic content quantification.Antimicrobial activity was tested using the method of disc diffusion on Mueller-Hinton medium.The ability of algal extracts to agglutinate bacterial cells was also tested.Results:The 70%EtOH extract of the two algae showed the highest values of total phenolic content compared to the Hex extract.The results of DPPH for both extracts(Hex,70%EtOH) of Osmundaria obtusiloba(43.46%and 99.47%) were higher than those of P.capillacea(33.04%and 40.81%) at a concentration of 1 000 μg/mL.As for the ferrous ion chelating,there was an opposite behavior,extracts of P.capillacea had a higher activity.The extracts showed a low ferric-reducing antioxidant power,with optical density ranging from0.054 to 0.180.Antioxidant activities of all extracts evaluated for β-carotene bleaching were above 40%.There was no antibacterial activity against bacterial strains tested.However,the extracts of both species were able to agglutinate bacterial Gram positive cells of Staphylococcus aureus and Gram negative cells of Escherichia coli,multidrug-resistant Salmonella and Vibrio harveyi.Conclusions This is the first report of the interaction between these algal extracts,rich in natural compounds with antioxidant potential,and Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial cells.Daniel Barroso de Alencar Fátima Cristiane Teles de Carvalho Rosa Helena Rebouas Daniel Rodrigues dos Santos Kelma Maria dos Santos Pires-Cavalcante Rebeca Larangeira de Lima Bárbara Mendes Baracho Rayssa Mendes Bezerra Francisco Arnaldo Viana Regine Helena Silva dos Fernandes Vieira Alexandre Holanda Sampaio Oscarina Viana de Sousa Silvana Saker-Sampaio 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2016,9,4:1
