Interactions between hotspots and the Southwest Indian Ridge during the last 90 Ma:Implications on the formation of oceanic plateaus and intra-plate seamounts显示文摘This study investigates the relationship between the hotspot-ridge interaction and the formation of oceanic plateaus and seamounts in the Southwest Indian Ocean. We first calculated the relative distance between the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) and relevant hotspots on the basis of models of plate reconstruction, and then calculated the corresponding excess magmatic anomalies of the hotspots on the basis of residual bathymetry and Airy isostasy. The results reveal that the activities of the Marion hotspot can be divided into three main phases:interaction with the paleo-Rodrigues triple junction (73.6-68.5 Ma),interaction with the SWIR (68.5-42.7 Ma),and intra-plate volcanism (42.7-0 Ma).These three phases correspond to the formation of the eastern, central, and western parts of the Del Cano Rise, respectively. The magnitude and apparent periodicity of the magmatic volume flux of the Marion hotspot appear to be dominated by the hotspot-ridge distance. The periodicity of the Marion hotspot is about 25 Ma,which is much longer than that of the Hawaii and Iceland hotspots (about 15 Ma).ZHANG Tao 1,2,3,4,LIN Jian 5 & GAO JinYao 3,4 1 Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Wuhan 430077,China 2 Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100049,China 3 The Second Institute of Oceanography,State Oceanic Administrator,Hangzhou 310012,China 4 Key Laboratory of Submarine Geosciences,State Oceanic Administrator,Hangzhou 310012,China 5 Department of Geology and Geophysics,Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution,Woods Hole,MA 02543,USA 2011Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,8:16
Magmatism and tectonic processes in Area A hydrothermal vent on the Southwest Indian Ridge显示文摘The hydrothermal vent in Area A(37.78°S,49.65°E)is the first active hydrothermal vent discovered on the Southwest Indian Ridge(SWIR).Heat source and adequate bulk permeability are two necessary factors for the formation of a hydrothermal vent.Along the SWIR 49.3°E to 51.2°E,the gravity-derived crustal thickness is up to 9.0 km,much thicker than the average thickness of the global oceanic crust. This characteristic indicates that the magma supply in this area is robust, which is possibly affected by a hotspot. The large-scale residual mantle Bouguer anomalies(RMBA)reveal prominent negative-gravity anomalies between the first-order ridge segment(from Indomed to Gallieni,46.0°E to 52.0°E)and the Marion-Del Cano-Crozet region. These anomalies indicate the channel of the hotspot-ridge interaction. The tomography data corrected with theoretical thermal model indicate that the low-velocity anomalies corresponding to this channel can reach the base of the lithosphere.Near the hydrothermal vent area, the topography and crustal thickness at the off-axis area are extremely asymmetrical.South of the SWIR,the high topography corresponds to the thinning crustal thickness. The residual isostatic topography anomalies indicate that Area A is a deviation from the local isostatic equilibrium, similar to the characteristics of the transform fault inside corner. The forward profiles of the magnetic data indicate that the thinning magnetic layer at the south side of Area A corresponds to the shallow,high-velocity area revealed by the OBS,which is the result of tectonic extension of a detachment fault. The active tectonic processes in Area A can provide sufficient crustal permeability to the hydrothermal circulation and may form massive sulfide deposits.ZHANG Tao LIN Jian GAO JinYao 2013Science China Earth Sciences2013,56,12:14
Faulting, magmatism and crustal oceanization of the Okinawa Trough显示文摘The paper focuses on the characteristics of faulting and magmatism of the Okinawa Trough and the relation between them. En-echelon grabens are ranked oblique to the continental shelf edge uplift, and the Longwang uplift, the rifting block ridge in the northern segment and the 'Mianhua uplift' in the southern segment have possibly preserved characteristics of volcanism and magmatism occurring with those rifting phases. The clockwise rotation of the southern Ryukyu Islands, driven by collision between Luzon and Taiwan, has played a key role in the crustal oceanization, enhancing the crustal extension of the southern segment and inducing volcanic magmatism in those grabens, among which the Yaeyama graben is a typical example of the presence of oceanic crust. Faulting and magmatism were mainly migrating towards the island arc asymmetrically. The crustal oceanization of the Okinawa Trough is diffcultly interpreted by the linear magnetic anomaly model, which is fit for the symmetric spreading of the mid-oceanic ridges.GAO Jinyao ZHANG Tao FANG Yinxia YANG Chuanguo MEI Sai 2009Acta Oceanologica Sinica2009,28,3:5
On tectonic movement in the South China Sea during the Cenozoic显示文摘The tectonic movement taking place at the end of Cretaceous and the beginning of Cenozoic had opened the Cenozoic phase of polycyclic tectonic movements, then the whole crust of the South China Sea had been mainly subjected to the regional stress field of tectonic tension, which was characterized by rifting depression.Seven times of regional tectonic movement and sedimentation had been assembled into a geological development history of polycyclic oscillation.Especially, the tectonic movements were strongly intensified at the end of Cretacious and the beginning of Paleagene, between Late Eocene and Mid-Oligocene,during Mid-and Late Miocene. These three times of tectonic movement had built the most important regional tectonic interfaces in the South China Sea.Crust movements of the South China Sea were the result and epitome of interaction of the Eurasia,Pacific and Indo-Australia plates, that is,they were introduced by polycyclic changes of directions, rates and strengths of lithospheric movements and asthenospheric flows across the Pacific and Indo-Australia plates.LIN Changsong CHU Fengyou GAO Jinyao TAN Yonghua 2009Acta Oceanologica Sinica2009,28,1:4
Mantle melting factors and amagmatic crustal accretion of the Gakkel ridge, Arctic Ocean显示文摘Spreading rate is a primary factor of mantle melting and tectonic behavior of the global mid-ocean ridges. The spreading rate of the Gakkel ridge decreases gradually from west to east. However, the Gakkel ridge can be divided into four thick-and-thin zones with varying crustal thicknesses along ridge axis. This phenomenon indicates that mantle melting of the Gakkel ridge is not a simple function of spreading rate. Mantle temperature, water content, mantle composition, and other factors are important in crustal accretion processes. Based on gravity-derived crustal thickness and wet melting model, we estimate that the mantle potential temperatures of the four zones are1 270, 1 220, 1 280, and 1 280°C(assuming that mantle water content equals to global average value), with corresponding mantle water contents of 210, 0, 340, and 280 mg/kg(assuming that mantle potential temperature is 1 260°C), respectivly. The western thinned crust zone is best modeled with low mantle temperature, whereas the other zones are mainly controlled by the enhanced conduction caused by the slower spreading rate. Along the Gakkel ridge, the crustal thickness is consistent with rock samples types. Predominated serpentinized peridotite and basalt are found in the area with crustal thickness <1.5 km and >2.5 km, respectively. The rock samples are including from basalt to peridotite in the area with crustal thickness between 1.5 and 2.5 km. Based on this consistency, the traditional magmatic accretion zone accounted for only 44% and amagmatic accretion accounted for 29% of the Gakkel ridge. The amagmatic accretion is a significant characteristic of the ultra-slow spreading ridge.ZHANG Tao GAO Jinyao CHEN Mei YANG Chunguo SHEN Zhongyan ZHOU Zhiyuan WU Zhaocai SUN Yunfan 2015Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,6:3
Rifting characteristics of eastern subbasin of South China Sea and its spreading pattern显示文摘With processing and interpretation of 25 000 km full-coverage multibeam swath data from the eastern South China Sea, it is found that NE-trending and NW-trending linear morphological featuressuch as scarps, horsts and grabens, govem the central part (14°~ 17° N) of eastern subbasin.Compared with reflection seismic profiles, these NE-trending linear morpho-structures are considered to be the representation of basement structures on seabed and can be divided into three linear structural zones. The trend of the central zone is NE45°~50° occurring around extinct spreading center, the trend of the second zone is NE70°~78° on both sides of the central one and the trend of the third zone is about NE60° just on the north of the second one. These three NE-trending linear zones are formed in late-stage NW-SE-trending seafloor spreading of the eastern subbasin along NW-trending linear faults, and respectively correspond to three spreading episodes: 17.0~19.0 Ma (5d-5e), 19.0~21.0 Ma (5e-6a) and 21.0~24.2 Ma (6a-6c) based on the contrast of morpho-structures to magnetic lineation anomalies.Li Jiabiao Jin Xianglong Gao Jinyao 2002Acta Oceanologica Sinica2002,21,1:3
Estimation of annual variation of water vapor in the Arctic Ocean between 80°–87°N using shipborne GPS data based on kinematic precise point positioning显示文摘The measurement of atmospheric water vapor(WV) content and variability is important for meteorological and climatological research. A technique for the remote sensing of atmospheric WV content using ground-based Global Positioning System(GPS) has become available, which can routinely achieve accuracies for integrated WV content of 1–2 kg/m2. Some experimental work has shown that the accuracy of WV measurements from a moving platform is comparable to that of(static) land-based receivers. Extending this technique into the marine environment on a moving platform would be greatly beneficial for many aspects of meteorological research, such as the calibration of satellite data, investigation of the air-sea interface, as well as forecasting and climatological studies. In this study, kinematic precise point positioning has been developed to investigate WV in the Arctic Ocean(80°–87°N) and annual variations are obtained for 2008 and 2012 that are identical to those related to the enhanced greenhouse effect.LUO Xiaowen ZHANG Tao GAO Jinyao YANG Chunguo WU Zaocai 2015Acta Oceanologica Sinica2015,34,6:1
Light hybrid micro/nano-robots:From propulsion to functional signals显示文摘Untethered motile micro/nanorobots(MNRs)that can operate in hard-to-reach small space and perform noninvasive tasks in cellular level hold bright future in healthcare, nanomanufacturing, biosensing, and environmental remediation.Light,as a flexible encoding method with tunable freedom of intensity, wavelength, polarization, and propagation direction, endows unique spatialtemporal precision and dexterity to the manipulation of MNRs.Meanwhile, light has been extensively investigated as functional signals in bioimaging, phototherapy,as well as photoelectrochemical reactions. The hybridization of light and other actuation method ushers in novel MNRs with broadened design space, improved controllability, and advanced functionality. In this review, the fundamental mechanisms of light-driven MNRs will be revisited. On top of it,light hybrid systems, coupling with magnetic, electric, chemical,or ultrasound field, will be reviewed, with light for propulsion or as functional signal. The rational hybridization of multiple stimulus in MNRs not only promises simple combination of two driving forces, but more importantly, motivates rethinking of light-driven MNRs for unprecedented applications.Yuxin Gao Ze Xiong Jizhuang Wang Jinyao Tang Dan Li 2022Nano Research2022,15,6:1
Progress in Antarctic marine geophysical research by the Chinese Polar Program显示文摘Marine geophysical survey by the Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE) began with the first science expedition in 1984/1985, although only four cruises were performed in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula between then and 1991/1992. After a 20 year hiatus, Antarctic marine geophysical research was relaunched by the Chinese Polar Environmental Comprehensive Investigation and Assessment Programs(known simply as the Chinese Polar Program) in 2011/2012. Integrated geophysical surveys have been carried out annually since, in Prydz Bay and the Ross Sea. During the last 5 years, we have acquired about 5500 km of bathymetric, gravimetric, and magnetic lines; more than 1800 km of seismic reflection lines; and data from several heat flow and Ocean Bottom Seismometer(OBS) stations. This work has deepened understandings of geophysical features and their implications for geological tectonics and glacial history in Antarctica and its surrounding seas. Compiled Antarctic Bouguer and Airy isostatic gravity anomalies show different features of tectonics between the East Antarctic stability and West Antarctic activity. Calculated magnetic anomalies, heat flow anomalies and lithospheric anisotropy offshore of Prydz Bay may imply high heat capacity of mantle shielded by the continental shelf lithosphere, but high heat dissipation of mantle due to the Cretaceous breakup of Gondwana along the continent and ocean transition(COT), where large sediment ridges would be brought about by the Oligocene ice sheet retreat and would enlarge free-air gravity anomalies. In the western Ross Sea, CHINARE seismic profiles indicate northern termination of the Terror Rift and deposition time of the grounding zone wedge in the northern JOIDES Basin.GAO Jinyao SHEN Zhongyan YANG Chunguo WANG Wei JI Fei WU Zhaocai NIU Xiongwei DING Weifeng LI Dongxu ZHANG Qiao 2017Advances in Polar Science2017,28,4:1
Glacial bedforms in the Northwind Abyssal Plain,Chukchi Borderland显示文摘A series of sub-parallel linear glacial scours are identified on the crest of the Baoshi Seamount in the Northwind Abyssal Plain by compiling new multibeam data acquired during the 9 th Chinese Arctic Research Expedition(CHINARE-Arc9)in 2018 and previously published data. The new data reveal scours that developed at water depths of 850–1030 m with an orientation of about 75°/255°.The maximum water depth occurs in the southernmost scour and is deeper than that from previous investigations, which showed a maximum scouring depth of about 900 m on the seamount. The topographic and geomorphological characteristics suggest that these scours resulted from erosion by the ice shelf extending from the Chukchi margin and/or Laurentide Ice Sheet that grounded on the crest of the seamount and moved in a NE–SW direction.Other possibilities of their genesis include armadas of large icebergs/multi-keel icebergs calved from the Chukchi Shelf or the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The new data provide new constraints for assessing the extent and volume of the ice sheet in the Chukchi area during glacial maxima.Zhongyan Shen Tao Zhang Jinyao Gao Chunguo Yang Qingsheng Guan 2021Acta Oceanologica Sinica2021,40,5:1

Bedrock samples from the Chukchi Borderland, Arctic Ocean——First Chinese dredge in the polar regions显示文摘The Chukchi Borderland is a relict continental block in the Arctic Ocean. Its origin and tectonic processes are of great significance for understanding the formation model of the Amerasia Basin and the configurations of the Mesozoic Arctic regions.Due to the harsh environment and rare geological and geophysical data, the evolution of the Chukchi Borderland is still unclear(e.g.,Grantz et al.,1998,2011).We conducted two rock dredges and a multibeam full coverage survey of 830 km2 in the Northwind Abyssal Plain of the Chukchi Borderland during the Chinese ninth Arctic scientific expedition in 2018.This is the first rock dredge survey of China in the polar regions with floating ice,and is just after the HLY0905 dredge at the Northwind Abyssal Plain in 2009(Mayer and Armstrong,2011).The retrieved samples will provide new information for understanding the origin and tectonic evolution of the Chukchi Borderland.Tao Zhang Yanhui Dong Chunguo Yang Qingsheng Guan Jinyao Gao 2019Acta Oceanologica Sinica2019,38,11:0
Heat flow measurements on the Lomonosov Ridge, Arctic Ocean显示文摘Heat flow was measured on the Lomonosov Ridge during the 5th Chinese National Arctic Expedition in 2012.To derive the time-temperature curve, resistivity data were transformed to temperature by the resistivitytemperature program.Direct reading and linear regression methods were used to calculate the equilibrium temperature, which were regressed against the depth of the probes in sediment to derive the geothermal gradient. Then, heat flow was calculated as the product of geothermal gradient and thermal conductivity of sediments. The heat flow values on the basis of the two methods were similar(i.e.,67.27 mW/m2and 63.99mW/m2,respectively).The results are consistent with the measurements carried out at adjacent sites. The age of the Lomonosov Ridge predicted by the heat flow-age model was 62 Ma,which is in accordance with the inference that the ridge was separated from Eurasia at about 60 Ma.XIAO Wentao ZHANG Tao ZHENG Yulong GAO Jinyao 2013Acta Oceanologica Sinica2013,32,12:0
Neogene faulting and volcanism in the Victoria Land Basin of the Ross Sea, Antarctica显示文摘The Neogene Terror Rift in the Antarctic Victoria Land Basin(VLB)of the Ross Sea,Antarctica,is composed of the Discovery Graben and the Lee Arch. Many Neogene volcanoes are aligned in the north-south direction in the southern VLB,belonging to the McMurdo Volcanic Group. However, due to multiple glaciations and limited seismic data, the volcanic processes are still unclear in the northern VLB,especially in the Terror Rift.Multichannel seismic profiles were collected at the VLB from the 32nd Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition(CHINARE).We utilized four seismic profiles from the CHINARE and additional historical profiles, along with gravity and magnetic anomalies,to analyze faults and stratigraphic characteristics in the northern Terror Rift and volcanism in the VLB.Negative flower structures found in the northern Terror Rift suggest that the Terror Rift was affected by dextral strike-slip faults extending from the northern Victoria Land(NVL).After the initial orthogonal tension, the rift transited into an oblique extension, forming a set of downward concaving normal faults and accommodation zones in the Terror Rift.On the Lee Arch, several imbricated normal faults formed and converged into a detachment fault.Under gravitational forces, the strata bent upward and formed a rollover anticline. Many deep faults and thin strata subjected to erosion facilitated volcanic activity.A brittle volcanic region in the VLB was affected by dextral strike-slip movements and east-west extension, resulting in two Neogene volcanic chains that connect three igneous provinces in the VLB:the Hallett,Melbourne, and Erebus Provinces. These two chains contain mud volcanoes with magnetic nuclei, volcanic intrusions, and late-stage volcanic eruptions.Volcanisms have brought about opposite polarities of magnetic anomalies in Antarctica, indicating the occurrence of multiple volcanic activities.Mei Yue JinYao Gao ChunFeng Li Chao Zhu XinZhi Fan Guochao Wu ZhongYan Shen Han Shi XiaoXian Cai YiDong Guo 2022Earth and Planetary Physics2022,6,3:0
Preliminary Results of the Seismicity Monitoring Experiment around the 2019 Mw5.4 Earthquake Epicenter in the Central South China Sea Basin显示文摘On September 5,2019,a moderate earthquake of Mw5.4 unexpectedly occurred in the apparently quiescent central basin of the South China Sea.We immediately carried out a seismicity monitoring experiment around the epicenter by using broadband ocean bottom seismometers(OBS)for the following three scientific targets. The first is knowing the earthquake seismogenic mechanism, fault structure and further development. The second is finding the role of the residual spreading ridge playing in earthquake processes and further revealing the deep structures of the ridge directional turning area. The third is confirming the existence and significance of the so called“Zhongnan fault”.This paper reports the preliminary results of the first phase experiment.Five OBSs were deployed for seismicity monitoring with a duration of 288 days, but only three were recovered.Micro-earthquakes were firstly detected by an automatic seismic phase picking algorithm and then were verified by analyzing their seismic phases and time-frequency characteristics in detail.A total of 21,68 and 89 microearthquakes were picked out from the three OBSs respectively within the distance of 30 km.The dominant frequency of these micro-earthquakes is 12-15 Hz,indicating tectonic fracturing.During the first two months after the mainshock the seismicity was relatively stronger, and micro-earthquakes were still occurring occasionally till the end of observation, indicating the epicenter area is active. We used Match&Locate method to locate 57 micro-earthquakes preliminarily.Their spatial distribution shows that the seismicity is developed mainly along the NE direction roughly parallel to the residual ridge with depth variations between 10-20 km.Wenfei Gong Aiguo Ruan Xiongwei Niu Zhenjie Wang Pingchuan Tan Xiaodong Wei Wei Wang Zhengyi Tong Liqun Cheng Fansheng Kong Shaoping Lu Jianke Fan Weiwei Ding Jinyao Gao Chunguo Yang Jiabiao Li 2024Journal of Earth Science2024,35,1:0
