1Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and polycystic ovary syndrome显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in the Western world comprising a spectrum of liver damage from fatty liver infiltration to end-stage liver disease,in patients without significant alcohol consumption.Increased prevalence of NAFLD has been reported in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS),one of the most common endocrinopathies in premenopausal women,which has been redefined as a reproductive and metabolic disorder after the recognition of the important role of insulin resistance in the pathophysiology of the syndrome.Obesity,in particular central adiposity and insulin resistance are considered as the main factors related to NAFLD in PCOS.Moreover,existing data support that androgen excess,which is the main feature of PCOS and is interrelated to insulin resistance,may be an additional contributing factor to the development of NAFLD.Although the natural history of NAFLD remains unclear and hepatic steatosis seems to be a relatively benign condition in most patients,limited data imply that advanced stage of liver disease is possibly more frequent in obese PCOS patients with NAFLD.PCOS patients,particularly obese patients with features of the metabolic syndrome,should be submitted to screening for NAFLD comprising assessment of serum aminotransferase levels and of hepatic steatosis by abdominal ultrasound.Lifestyle modifications including diet,weight loss and exercise are the most appropriate initial therapeutic interventions for PCOS patients with NAFLD.When pharmacologic therapy is considered,metformin may be used,although currently there is no medical therapy of proven benefit for NAFLD.Long-term follow up studies are needed to clarify clinical implications and guide appropriate diagnostic evaluation,follow-up protocol and optimal treatment for PCOS patients with NAFLD.Evangeline Vassilatou 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,26:11
2Watershed Prioritization of Palar Sub-watershed Based on the Morphometric and Land Use Analysis显示文摘Morphometric analysis is an indispensable tool for hydrological investigation that involves the development and management of drainage basin. This study characterizes the micro watersheds in the Palar sub-watershed using morphometric analysis and assesses its risk by land use and land cover features in a particular micro watershed. Palar sub-watershed is divided into 6 micro watersheds for prioritization based on morphometric and land use analysis. Several morphometric parameters(linear, shape and relief)are determined from the drainage map; ranks are assigned based on their capacity to induce erodability and degradation. Final ranking is based on the composite index calculated from the sum of the ranks of each morphometric parameter. Morphometric analysis reveals micro watersheds 5 and 6 as most susceptible and 2 and 3 as low susceptible. Land use is mapped using IRS ID LISS III satellite data. The risk in terms of watershed degradation involved to each micro watershed is based on the ranks of each land use feature, obtained from a similar composite index as that of morphometric analysis. Land use analysis shows that micro watersheds 2 and 4 fall under high priority category while 5 and 6 under low priority category. Integration of the morphometric and land use analysis shows that only micro watershed 1 falls under the same category in both analyses. Control measures are suggested to contain degradation depending on its specific land use pattern and morphometric features. 4一种用于去除水中氟化物纳米吸附剂的研究进展(英文)显示文摘The study was designed to investigate the use of two sorbents namely(i) Fe3O4 nanoparticles immobilized in sodium alginate matrix(FNPSA) and(ii) Fe3O4 nanoparticles and saponified orange peel residue immobilized in sodium alginate matrix(FNPSOPR) as sorbents for fluoride removal from contaminated water. The synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed and characterized by dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform-infrared spectrometry. The sorbent matrices were prepared in the form of beads and surface functionalized to enable enhanced sorption of fluoride ions. Batch sorption studies were carried out and the sorption isotherm and reaction kinetics were analyzed. Both the sorbents followed Langmuir model of isotherm and fitted well with Pseudo first order reaction. The maximum sorption capacity exhibited by FNPSA and FNPSOPR was58.24 mg·g-1and 80.33 mg·g-1respectively. Five sorption–desorption cycles exhibited 100%, 97.56%, 94.53%,83.21%, and 76.53% of regeneration of FNPSOPR. Accordingly, it is demonstrated that FNSOPR could be used as a promising sorbent for easy and efficient removal of fluoride from contaminated water with good reusability.The current work suggests a simple and effective method to remove fluoride from contaminated water.Evangeline Christina Pragasam Viswanathan 2015Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2015,23,6:2

13A spatial model for the assessment of debris flow susceptibility along the Kodaikkanal-Palani traffic corridor显示文摘Debris flow is one of the most destructive water related mass movements that affects the development of mountain terrains.A reliable assessment of debris flow susceptibility requires adequate data,but in most developing countries like India,there is a dearth of such extensive scientific records.This study presents a novel approach for assessing debris flow using the analytical network process(ANP)in data insufficient regions.A stretch of hill road between Kumburvayal and Vadakaunchi along the Kodaikkanal-Palani Traffic Corridor(M171)was considered for this study.Five significant factors including the nature of slope forming materials,hydraulic conductivity,slope,vegetation,and drainage density were identified from intense field surveys and inspections in order to assess the susceptibility of the terrain to debris flow.This model endorsed the interdependencies between the selected factors.The resulting debris flow susceptibility map delineated regions highly prone to debris flow occurrences,which constituted nearly 23%of the selected road stretch.Evangelin Ramani SUJATHA 2020Frontiers of Earth Science2020,14,2:1
