| 1 | Development of hepatorenal syndrome in bile duct ligated rats显示文摘AIM: To evaluate in bile duct ligated rats whether there were progressive alterations of renal function without changes in histopathology. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were submitted to sham-surgery or bile duct ligation (BDL) and divided according to the post-procedure time (2, 4 and 6-wk). To determine renal function parameters, rats wereplaced in metabolic cages and, at the end of the experiment, blood and urine samples were obtained. Histology and hydroxyproline content were analyzed in liver and renal tissue. RESULTS: Rats with 2 wk of BDL increased free water clearance (P = 0.02), reduced urinary osmolality (P = 0.03) and serum creatinine (P = 0.01) in comparison to the sham group. In contrast, rats at 6 wk of BDL showed features of HRS, including signif icant increase in serum creatinine and reductions in creatinine clearance, water excretion and urinary sodium concentration. Rats with 4 wk of BDL exhibited an intermediate stage of renal dysfunction. Progressive hepatic f ibrosis according to post-procedure time was confirmed by histology. The increased levels of liver hydroxyproline contrasted with the absence of structural changes in the kidney, as assessed by histology and unchanged hydroxyproline content in renal tissue. CONCLUSION: Our data show that BDL produced progressive renal dysfunction without structural changes in the kidney, characterizing HRS. | 5 | Actinic prurigo of the lip: Two case reports显示文摘Actinic prurigo is a photodermatosis that can affect the skin, conjunctiva and lips. It is caused by an abnormal reaction to sunlight and is more common in high-altitude living people, mainly in indigenous descendants. The diagnosis of actinic prurigo can be challenging, mainly when lip lesions are the only manifestation, which is not a common clinical presentation. The aim of this article is to report two cases of actinic prurigo showing only lip lesions. The patients were Afro-American and were unaware of possible Indian ancestry. Clinical exam, photographs, videoroscopy examination and biopsy were performed, and the diagnosis of actinic prurigo was established. Topical corticosteroid and lip balm with ultraviolet protection were prescribed with excellent results. | 18 | ^(222)Rn calibration procedure for water analyses by liquid scintillation counting显示文摘Purpose Among the several methods to measure ^(222)Rn in water,the liquid scintillation counting(LSC)technique is one of the most sensitive and widely used when analysing non-saline waters by liquid extraction,providing excellent accuracy,precision and low-level detection limits.When using the liquid scintillation counter Tri-Carb 3170 TR/SL(Perkin-Elmer)it is not possible to make an automatic determination of the alpha/beta discrimination parameter,being necessary to evaluate the pulse decay discriminator(PDD)value manually to the ^(222)Rn determination.In this work,we describe the steps to perform the calibration of that type of equipment.Methods The method consists in the preparation of standard samples from a ^(226)Ra certified standard solution and the adjustment of the PDD value by hand until the percentage of alpha events reaches a plateau of a near-constant fraction of total events.The process consists in taking several measures between PDD 80 and 200 with 15 min counting time each.Within the plateau,the alpha/beta ratio was used to determine the plateau final range as well as the optimum PDD value.After that,the calibration standards and blanks were measured and the region of interest(ROI)was established by finding the maximum value for the figure of merit(FOM)in the upper and lower limits.Results The optimal PDD value of 148 was established by the alpha/beta ratio,and after that,it was possible to measure ^(226)Ra standards to perform the calibration.An efficiency of(9.758±0.035)×1^(0-1) was obtained.In routine measurements,a detection limit of about 0.50 Bq L^(-1) is achieved for a 120 min counting time.To evaluate the uncertainty budget,the uncertainties of the net count rate,the efficiency,the sample amount and the decay correction factor were considered.Conclusions A method was developed for the calibration of LSC Tri-Carb 3170 TR/SL with the optimization of the PDD using a ^(226)Ra standard solution.The acquisition to obtain the plot of the variation of the events fraction in each window(alpha and beta)in function of PDD allowed to evaluate a plateau where the fraction of events was at a minimum.Afterwards,it was possible to measure the set of ^(226)Ra standards after the equilibrium with ^(222)Rn and determine the efficiency for ^(222)Rn with a detection limit of about 0.50 Bq L^(-1) in routine analyses. | Ana Rita Gomes Sérgio Dias Anabela Mourato Joao Abrantes Mário Reis | 2023 | Radiation Detection Technology and Methods2023,7,2: | 0 |
| 19 | Hospitalizations and in-hospital mortality for inflammatory bowel disease in Brazil显示文摘BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is associated with complications,frequent hospitalizations,surgery and death.The introduction of biologic drugs into the therapeutic arsenal in the last two decades,combined with an expansion of immunosuppressant therapy,has changed IBD management and may have altered the profile of hospitalizations and in-hospital mortality(IHM)due to IBD.AIM To describe hospitalizations from 2008 to 2018 and to analyze IHM from 1998 to 2017 for IBD in Brazil.METHODS This observational,retrospective,ecological study used secondary data on hospitalizations for IBD in Brazil for 2008-2018 to describe hospitalizations and for 1998-2017 to analyze IHM.Hospitalization data were obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Brazilian Unified Health System and population data from demographic censuses.The following variables were analyzed:Number of deaths and hospitalizations,length of hospital stay,financial costs of hospitalization,sex,age,ethnicity and type of hospital admission.RESULTS There was a reduction in the number of IBD hospitalizations,from 6975 admissions in 1998 to 4113 in 2017(trend:y=-0.1682x+342.8;R^(2)=0.8197;P<0.0001).The hospitalization rate also decreased,from 3.60/100000 in 2000 to 2.17 in 2010.IHM rates varied during the 20-year period,between 2.06 in 2017 and 3.64 in 2007,and did not follow a linear trend(y=-0.0005049x+2.617;R^(2)=0,00006;P=0.9741).IHM rates also varied between regions,increasing in all but the southeast,which showed a decreasing trend(y=-0.1122x+4.427;R^(2)=0,728;P<0.0001).The Southeast region accounted for 44.29%of all hospitalizations.The Northeast region had the highest IHM rate(2.86 deaths/100 admissions),with an increasing trend(y=0.1105x+1.110;R^(2)=0.6265;P<0.0001),but the lowest hospitalization rate(1.15).The Midwest and South regions had the highest hospitalization rates(3.27 and 3.17,respectively).A higher IHM rate was observed for nonelective admissions(2.88),which accounted for 81%of IBD hospitalizations.The total cost of IBD hospitalizations in 2017 exhibited an increase of 37.5%compared to 2008.CONCLUSION There has been a notable reduction in the number of hospitalizations for IBD in Brazil over 20 years.IHM rates varied and did not follow a linear trend. | Ana Luiza Vilar Guedes Amanda Lopes Lorentz Larissa Fernandes de Almeida Rios Rios Beatriz Camara Freitas Adriano Gutemberg Neves Dias Ana Luísa Eckhard Uhlein Felipe Oliveira Vieira Neto Jobson Felipe Soares Jesus Túlio de SáNovaes Torres Raquel Rocha Vitor D Andrade Genoile Oliveira Santana | 2022 | World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics2022,13,1: | 0 |
