A male-ABCD algorithm for hepatocellular carcinoma risk prediction in HBs Ag carriers显示文摘Objective: Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) development among hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag) carriers shows gender disparity, influenced by underlying liver diseases that display variations in laboratory tests. We aimed to construct a risk-stratified HCC prediction model for HBs Ag-positive male adults. Methods: HBs Ag-positive males of 35-69 years old(N=6,153) were included from a multi-center populationbased liver cancer screening study. Randomly, three centers were set as training, the other three centers as validation. Within 2 years since initiation, we administrated at least two rounds of HCC screening using Bultrasonography and α-fetoprotein(AFP). We used logistic regression models to determine potential risk factors, built and examined the operating characteristics of a point-based algorithm for HCC risk prediction. Results: With 2 years of follow-up, 302 HCC cases were diagnosed. A male-ABCD algorithm was constructed including participant's age, blood levels of GGT(γ-glutamyl-transpeptidase), counts of platelets, white cells, concentration of DCP(des-γ-carboxy-prothrombin) and AFP, with scores ranging from 0 to 18.3. The area under receiver operating characteristic was 0.91(0.90-0.93), larger than existing models. At 1.5 points of risk score,26.10% of the participants in training cohort and 14.94% in validation cohort were recognized at low risk, with sensitivity of identifying HCC remained 100%. At 2.5 points, 46.51% of the participants in training cohort and 33.68% in validation cohort were recognized at low risk with 99.06% and 97.78% of sensitivity, respectively. At 4.5 points, only 20.86% of participants in training cohort and 23.73% in validation cohort were recognized at high risk, with positive prediction value of 22.85% and 12.35%, respectively. Conclusions: Male-ABCD algorithm identified individual's risk for HCC occurrence within short term for their HCC precision surveillance.Yuting Wang Minjie Wang He Li Kun Chen Hongmei Zeng Xinyu Bi Zheng Zhu Yuchen Jiao Yong Wang Jian Zhu Hui Zhao Xiang Liu Chunyun Dai Chunsun Fan Can Zhao Deyin Guo Hong Zhao Jianguo Zhou Dongmei Wang Zhiyuan Wu Xinming Zhao Wei Cui Xuehong Zhang Jianqiang Cai Wanqing Chen Chunfeng Qu 2021Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2021,33,3:3
Clinical and prognostic significance of expression of phosphoglycerate mutase family member 5 and Parkin in advanced colorectal cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND Drugs targeting mitochondria can induce mitophagy and restrain proliferation in colorectal cancer(CRC)cells.Phosphoglycerate mutase family member 5(PGAM5)activates serine/threonine PTEN-induced putative kinase 1/Parkin pathway-mediated mitophagy. However, there are few studies on the clinical and prognostic significance of expression of PGAM5 protein and mitophagy-related protein Parkin in patients.AIM To assess the clinical significance of PGAM5 and Parkin proteins,as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of CRC,by studying their expression in advanced CRC tissues and their association with clinicopathological parameters.METHODS The expression of PGAM5 and Parkin in CRC tissues from 100 patients was determined by immunohistochemistry. Each case was evaluated by using a combined scoring method based on signal intensity staining(scored 0-3)and the proportion of positively stained cancer cells(scored 0-4).The final staining score was calculated as the intensity score multiplied by the proportion score.Specimens were categorized as either high or low expression according to the Youden index, and the association between the expression of PGAM5 or Parkin and clinicopathological factors was ascertained.Additionally,we employed western blot to measure PGAM5 and Parkin protein expression in six matched pairs of CRC and adjacent non-tumor tissues.RESULTS Immunohistochemical and western blot findings showed that both PGAM5 and Parkin protein expression in tumor tissues was significantly higher than that in the adjacent tissues:PGAM5 and Parkin were mainly expressed in the cytoplasm of colonic epithelial cells.PGAM5 and Parkin protein levels were significantly positively correlated in advanced CRC tissues. Moreover, reduced Parkin protein expression was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival and progression-free survival in CRC patients as evinced by multivariate analysis.CONCLUSION The expression of PGAM5 protein and mitophagy-related protein Parkin has diagnostic significance for CRC and may become new biomarkers.Parkin may be a potential marker for the survival of CRC patients. Can Wu Ming-Liang Feng Tai-Wei Jiao Ming-Jun Sun 2022World Journal of Clinical Cases2022,10,14:1

Sexual and spatio-temporal variation of Lake Erie Walleye growth and maturity:A consequence of multiple impacting factors显示文摘Sexual and spatio-temporal variations have been observed in the life history parameters of many aquatic species and their causes have been related to harvesting pressure and environmental changes. This study aims to explore sexual, spatial and temporal variation in the growth and maturity through weight-at-length,length-at-age,and maturity-at-length relationships for Lake Erie Walleye(Sander vitreus)as a case to test some hypotheses.Hypotheses on whether harvest pressure and environmental changes(both local and global scale)caused the temporal changes of these life history traits were further diagnosed.Sexual and spatio-temporal variations in these life history traits were formulated using mixed-effects models. Our study found that geographic basin, sex, year and cohort all have substantial effects on the growth and maturity of Walleye based on survey data from 1989 to 2015.Multiple factors including water supply of Lake Erie, temperature, fishing pressure of Walleye, and global climate factors were found to correlate with the temporal variations of growth and maturity of Walleye significantly. Our findings should contribute to the future interpretation of Walleye life history variations and population dynamics. The methodology constructed in this study could be applied to explore the heterogeneity and impacting factors for other species in aquatic ecosystems.Qiuyun Ma Yan Jiao Can Zhou Yiping Ren 2021Aquaculture and Fisheries2021,6,4:0
Reprogrammed siTNFα/neutrophil cytopharmaceuticals targeting inflamed joints for rheumatoid arthritis therapy显示文摘Rheumatoid arthritis(RA)is an autoimmune disease characterized by severe synovial inflammation and cartilage damage.Despite great progress in RA therapy, there still lacks the drugs to completely cure RA patients.Herein,we propose a reprogrammed neutrophil cytopharmaceuticals loading with TNFα-targeting-siRNA(siTNFα)as an alternative anti-inflammatory approach for RA treatment. The loaded siTNFαact as not only the gene therapeutics to inhibit TNFαproduction by macrophages in inflamed synovium, but also the editors to reprogram neutrophils to anti-inflammatory phenotypes.Leveraging the active tendency of neutrophils to inflammation, the reprogrammed siTNFα/neutrophil cytopharmaceuticals(siTNFα/TP/NEs)can rapidly migrate to the inflamed synovium, transfer the loaded siTNFαto macrophages followed by the significant reduction of TNFαexpression, and circumvent the pro-inflammatory activity of neutrophils, thus leading to the alleviated synovial inflammation and improved cartilage protection. Our work provides a promising cytopharmaceutical for RA treatment, and puts forward a living neutrophil-based gene delivery platform.Yijun Chen Kaiming Li Mengying Jiao Yingshuang Huang Zihao Zhang Lingjing Xue Caoyun Ju Can Zhang 2023Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2023,13,2:0
An Artificial Neural Network Model Combined with Dietary Retinol Intake from Different Sources to Predict the Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease显示文摘Objective This study aimed to develop an artificial neural network(ANN) model combined with dietary retinol intake from different sources to predict the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in American adults. Methods Data from the 2007 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES)2007–2014 were analyzed. Eligible subjects(n = 6,613) were randomly divided into a training set(n1 =4,609) and a validation set(n2 = 2,004) at a ratio of 7:3. The training set was used to identify predictors of NAFLD risk using logistic regression analysis. An ANN was established to predict the NAFLD risk using a training set. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the model using the training and validation sets. Results Our study found that the odds ratios(ORs) and 95% confidence intervals(CIs) of NAFLD for the highest quartile of plant-derived dietary retinol intake(i.e., provitamin A carotenoids, such as β-carotene)(OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.57 to 0.99) were inversely associated with NAFLD risk, compared to the lowest quartile of intake, after adjusting for potential confounders. The areas under the ROC curves were 0.874 and 0.883 for the training and validation sets, respectively. NAFLD occurs when its incidence probability is greater than 0.388.Conclusion The ANN model combined with plant-derived dietary retinol intake showed a significant effect on NAFLD. This could be applied to predict NAFLD risk in the American adult population when government departments formulate future health plans.LIU Can ZHOU Shi Hui SU Hong YANG Wen Qin LU Jiao 2023Biomedical and Environmental Sciences2023,36,12:0
Malnutrition predicts poor outcomes in diabetic COVID-19 patients in Huangshi,Hubei显示文摘Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection has spread throughout the world, which becomes a global public health emergency.Undernourishment prolongs its convalescence and has an adverse effect on its prognosis, especially in diabetic patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of undernourishment and to determine how it is related to the prognostic outcomes in the diabetic patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).A retrospective, multicenter study was conducted in 85 diabetic COVID-19 patients from three hospitals in Hubei Province. All patients were assessed using the European Nutritional Risk Screening 2002(NRS-2002)and other nutritional assessments when admitted.Of them,35(41.18%)were at risk of malnutrition(NRS score≥3).Severe COVID-19 patients had a significantly lower level of serum albumin and prealbumin and higher NRS score than non-severe patients.Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that serum prealbumin and NRS score increased the likelihood of progression into severe status(P<0.05).Meanwhile,single factor and multivariate analysis determined that grade of illness severity was an independent predictor for malnutrition.Furthermore, prealbumin and NRS score could well predict severe status for COVID-19 patients. The malnutrition group(NRS score≥3)had more severe illness than the normal nutritional(NRS score<3)group(P<0.001),and had a longer length of in-hospital stay and higher mortality.Malnutrition is highly prevalent among COVID-19 patients with diabetes. It is associated with severely ill status and poor prognosis.Evaluation of nutritional status should be strengthened, especially the indicators of NRS-2002 and the level of serum prealbumin.Jiao Chen Can Zhao Yingzi Huang Hao Wang Xiang Lu Wei Zhao Wei Gao 2022The Journal of Biomedical Research2022,36,1:0
Fabrication of ZnO with tunable morphology through a facile treatment of Zn-based coordination polymers显示文摘The morphology and structure of zinc oxide(ZnO), one of the important semiconductors, are relevant to its properties and applications. The preparation of ZnO with tunable morphology and desired structure is an attractive topic in the field of material synthesis. This work reports a facile method for the synthesis of Zn O with controllable morphology and crystal orientation using Zn-based coordination polymer particles(Zn-CPP) as precursors. Using hydrothermal method, Zn-CPP with morphologies of microrod, nanoplate, flower-like, arrow-tipped microsheet, and square cylinder were successfully synthesized via the coordination between metal ions Zn2+ and organic ligand 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride in aqueous solution. Subsequent thermal treatment of the Zn-CPP successfully resulted in the formation of porous Zn O with similar morphology to Zn-CPP. It is also found that the Zn O with enhanced(002) orientation could be obtained from Zn-CPP with preferred(002) orientation. This strategy could be extended for the preparation of other metal oxides with desired shape and structure.Panpan Su Jiao Zhao Feng Rong Can Li Qihua Yang 2015Science China Chemistry2015,58,3:0
New insights into the dispersion history and adaptive evolution of taxon Aegilops tauschii in China显示文摘Aegilops tauschii, the wild progenitor of wheat D-genome and a valuable germplasm for wheat improvement, has a wide natural distribution from eastern Turkey to China. However, the phylogenetic relationship and dispersion history of Ae.tauschii in China has not been scientifically clarified. In this study,we genotyped 208 accessions(with 104 in China)using dd RAD sequencing and 55K SNP array, and classified the population into six sublineages.Three possible spreading routes or events were identified, resulting in specific distribution patterns, with four sublineages found in Xinjiang, one in Qinghai, two in Shaanxi and one in Henan. We also established the correlation of SNP-based,karyotypebased and spike-morphology-based techniques to demonstrate the internal classification of Ae.tauschii, and developed consensus dataset with 1245 putative accessions by merging data previously published. Our analysis suggested that eight inter-lineage accessions could be assigned to the putative Lineage 3and these accessions would help to conserve the genetic diversity of the species.By developing the consensus phylogenetic relationships of Ae.tauschii, our work validated the hypothesis on the dispersal history of Ae.tauschii in China, and contributed to the efficient and comprehensive germplasm-mining of the species.Hao Li Fang Nie Lele Zhu Menghua Mu Ruixiao Fan Jingyao Li Aaqib Shaheen Yifan Liu Can Li Wenjuan Liu Huihui Liang Xinpeng Zhao Shenglong Bai Guanghui Guo Zheng Li Yiheng Hu Yuannian Jiao Jonathan Adams Assaf Distelfeld Guiling Sun Suoping Li Yun Zhou Chun-Peng Song 2022Journal of Genetics and Genomics2022,49,3:0
Self-compassion and resilience mediate the relationship between childhood exposure to domestic violence and posttraumatic growth/stress disorder during COVID-19 pandemic显示文摘BACKGROUND Studies have indicated that childhood exposure to domestic violence is a common factor in posttraumatic growth(PTG)and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD),but it is unclear whether PTG and PTSD share a common/different underlying mechanism.AIM To explore the common/different underlying mechanism of PTG and PTSD.METHODS Between February 12 and 17,2020,a nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted in China among 2038 university students, and a self-administered questionnaire was used for the data collection. The data included demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, and subjective social economic status, and childhood exposure to domestic violence scale that was selected from the Chinese version of revised Adverse Childhood Experiences Question,Self-compassion Scale,Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale,Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, and the Abbreviated PTSD Checklist-Civilian version.A structural equation model was used to test the hypotheses.RESULTS Exposure to domestic violence was significantly associated with PTG and PTSD via a 1-step indirect path of self-compassion(PTG:β=-0.023,95%CI:-0.44 to-0.007;PTSD:β=0.008,95%CI:0.002,0.014)and via a 2-step indirect path from self-compassion to resilience(PTG:β=-0.008,95%CI:-0.018 to-0.002;PTSD:β=0.013,95%CI:0.004-0.024).However,resilience did not mediate the relationship between exposure to domestic violence and PTG and PTSD.CONCLUSION PTG and PTSD are common results of childhood exposure to domestic violence, which may be influenced by self-compassion and resilience.Xin-Li Chi Qiao-Min Huang Xiao-Feng Liu Liu-Yue Huang Meng-Jian Hu Zhi-Jing Chen Can Jiao Brendon Stubbs M Mahbub Hossain Li-Ye Zou 2021World Journal of Psychiatry2021,11,11:0
Association between Active School Travel and Depressive Symptoms among 51,702 Adolescents in 26 Low- and Middle-Income Countries显示文摘Little is known about the role of active school travel(AST)on mental health among adolescents. Thus, this study aimed to explore the AST-depression association among adolescents aged 12–15 years from 26 low-and middle-income countries(LMICs).Data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey were analyzed in 51,702 adolescents[mean(SD)age 13.8(1.0)years;49.3%boys).Both depressive symptoms and AST were assessed by a single question self-reported measure, respectively.Participants who reported having 5 days or above were considered as AST.Multivariable logistic regression analysis(accounting for sampling weights)was performed while controlling for gender, age, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and food insecurity, and a countrywide meta-analysis was undertaken. The prevalence of depressive symptoms and AST were 30.1%and 37.0%,respectively.Compared with those not having AST,adolescents with AST were less likely to have self-reported depressive symptoms(OR=0.88,95%CI:0.85-0.93)regardless of gender.Countrywide meta-analysis demonstrated that having AST versus not having AST was associated with 12%lower odds for depressive symptoms(OR=0.88;95%CI:0.82-0.94)but with a moderate between-country heterogeneity(I^(2)=59.0%).Based on large samples of adolescents from LMICs,it would be expected that AST may play a critical role in preventing adolescent depression worldwide. However,it is necessary to consider more country-specific factors when implementing AST-related mental health interventions.Future studies should adopt the solid study design to confirm or negate our researchfindings.Shuan Liu Sitong Chen Xiaohong Zhu Brendon Stubbs Qian Yu Mark D.Griffiths Can Jiao Aiguo Chen Md Mahbub Hossain Zsolt Demetrovics Albert S.Yeung Jinming Li Xingyu Zhang Liye Zou 2021International Journal of Mental Health Promotion2021,23,2:0
Electrochemical properties of high-loading sulfur–carbon materials prepared by in situ generation method显示文摘A high sulfur content sulfur–carbon composite was synthesized via in situ generation method in aqueous solution. When the sulfur loading is up to 90%,the electrode still exhibits good cycling performance with a reversible capacity of about 623 mAh·g^(-1)after 100 cycles. To further commercialize the Li–S battery, understanding the capacity degradation mechanism is very essential, especially with a high sulfur loading electrode. To achieve this goal, the electrochemical performance of the high sulfur loading electrode was studied, and the structure change of the electrode after cycling was also examined by ex situ scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and other techniques. The result shows that the Li_(2)S_(2)and Li_(2)S inhomogeneous precipitation contributes to the majority capacity fading of the high sulfur loading Li–S cells. Can Jiao Chun-Rong Zhao Li Zhang Shang-Qian Zhao Guo-Yao Pang Hao-Bo Sun Shi-Gang Lu 2023Rare Metals2023,42,11:0
Overexpression of ELL-associated factor 2 suppresses invasion, migration, and angiogenesis in colorectal cancer显示文摘BACKGROUND The androgen responsive gene,ELL-associated factor 2(EAF2),expressed in benign prostate tissues, has been shown to play an important role in tumor suppression in a variety of malignant tumors. In addition, some scholars found that EAF2 frameshift mutations are associated with intratumor heterogeneity in colorectal cancer(CRC)and inactivation of EAF2 in microsatellite instability-high CRC.However, the molecular mechanism by which EAF2 is involved in CRC invasion and metastasis remains unclear.AIM To determine the clinical value of expression of EAF2 protein in CRC,and to study the effects of EAF2 on the invasion, migration, and angiogenesis of CRC cells in vitro.METHODS In this study,we collected colorectal adenocarcinoma and corresponding adjacent tissues to investigate the clinical expression of EAF2 protein in patients with advanced CRC.Subsequently,we investigated the effect of EAF2 on the invasion, migration, and angiogenesis of CRC cells in vitro using plasmid transfection.RESULTS EAF2 protein was lowly expressed in cancer tissues of patients with advanced CRC.Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the survival rate of the high EAF2 level group was higher than that of the low EAF2 level group.CONCLUSION Our results demonstrated that EAF2,as a tumor suppressor, may inhibit the invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis of CRC cells by regulating the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3/transforming growth factor-β1 crosstalk pathway, and play a cancer suppressive and protective role in the occurrence and development of CRC.Our findings are of great significance to provide a new idea and theoretical basis for the targeted diagnosis and treatment of CRC.Ming-Liang Feng Can Wu Hui-Jing Zhang Huan Zhou Tai-Wei Jiao Meng-Yuan Liu Ming-Jun Sun 2022World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology2022,14,10:0
