Potassium-induced bifurcations and chaos of firing patterns observed from biological experiment on a neural pacemaker显示文摘Changes of neural firing patterns and transitions between firing patterns induced by the introduction of external stimulation or adjustment of biological parameter have been demonstrated to play key roles in information coding. In this paper, bifurcation processes of bursting patterns were observed from an experimental neural pacemaker, through the adjustment of potassium parameter including ion concentration and calcium-dependent channel conductance. The adjustment of calcium-dependent potassium channel conductance was achieved by changing the extracellular tetraethylammonium concentration. The deterministic dynamics of chaotic bursting patterns induced by period-doubling bifurcation and intermittency, and lying between two periodic bursting patterns in a period-adding bifurcation process was investigated with a nonlinear prediction method. The bifurcations included period-doubling and period-adding bifurcations of bursting patterns. The experimental bifurcations and chaos closely matched those previously simulated in the theoretical neuronal model by adjusting potassium parameter, which demonstrated the simulation results of the theoretical model. The experimental results indicate that the potassium concentration and conductance of calcium-dependent potassium channel can induce bifurcations of the neural firing patterns. The potential role of these bifurcation structures in neural information coding mechanism is discussed.GU HuaGuang CHEN ShengGen 2014Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,5:11
Analytical solutions of hard roof's bending moment, deflection and energy under the front abutment pressure before periodic weighting显示文摘The distribution of front abutment pressure is closely related to the force, deformation and energy distribution of hard roof before periodic weighting. So it is necessary to carry out research on the relationship between them. According to front abutment pressure distribution feature, using the location of peak front abutment pressure as the dividing point, coal seam is divided into two parts along the direction of mining: the yield zone that is the area between the faceline and the point where the maximum front abutment pressure occurs, and the elastic zone that is the part before the point of peak front abutment pressure. The proposed mechanical model of unit width hard roof at the panel center before periodic weighting consists of five parts including the yield zone. All parameters of the deflection equations for each of the five parts that satisfy the continuity conditions and natural boundary conditions are obtained by using the Matlab software. The continuous curves of front abutment pressure, deflection, bending moment and bending strain energy density distribution of hard roof are obtained by iterative approximation method, and the relationship between the yield zone width and the above curves are analyzed in detailed.Jiang Haijun Cao Shenggen Zhang Yun Wang Chen 2016International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2016,26,1:9
Modelling the Emerging COVID-19 Epidemic and Estimating Intervention Effectiveness—Taiwan,China,2021显示文摘Introduction:The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic recently affected Taiwan,China. This study aimed to calculate the transmissibility of COVID-19 to predict trends and evaluate the effects of interventions. Methods:The data of reported COVID-19 cases was collected from April 20 to May 26,2021,which included daily reported data(Scenario I)and reported data after adjustment(Scenario II).A susceptibleexposed-symptomatic-asymptomatic-recovered model was developed to fit the data. The effective reproductive number(Reff)was used to estimate the transmissibility of COVID-19.Results:A total of 4,854 cases were collected for the modelling. In Scenario I,the intervention has already taken some effects from May 17 to May 26(the Reff reduced to 2.1).When the Reff was set as 0.1,the epidemic was projected to end on July 4,and a total of 1,997 cases and 855 asymptomatic individuals would have been reported. In Scenario II,the interventions were projected as having been effective from May 24 to May 26(the Reff reduced to 0.4).When the Reff was set as 0.1,the epidemic was projected to end on July 1,and a total of 1,482 cases and 635 asymptomatic individuals would have been reported. Conclusion:The epidemic of COVID-19 was projected to end after at least one month, even if the most effective interventions were applied in Taiwan,China.Although there were some positive effects of intervention in Taiwan,China.Weikang Liu Wenjing Ye Zeyu Zhao Chan Liu Bin Deng Li Luo Jiefeng Huang Yao Wang Jia Rui Benhua Zhao Yanhua Su Shenggen Wu Kun Chen Jianming Ou Tianmu Chen 2021China CDC weekly2021,3,34:1
Continuous video electroencephalogram for herpes simplex encephalitis:a case report and literature review显示文摘Background:Electroencephalogram(EEG)is an important tool for the diagnosis of herpes simplex virus encephalitis(HSE).However, the diagnosis of non-convulsive status epilepticus(NCSE)in HSE is challenging without the help of continuous video EEG(CVEEG),and whether EEG is a predictor of outcome remains controversial.Case presentation:A 63-year-old woman presented with a 5 day history of fever, coma and seizures. Results of EEG,magnetic resonance imaging and polymerase chain reaction(PCR)in cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)were suggestive of herpes simplex encephalitis-1(HSE-1).Preliminary EEG showed periodic discharges at the prefrontal and temporal lobes, which were particularly synchronized with intermittent lip smacking movements, and the discharges were terminated by diazepam. After 2-week treatment with acyclovir,high-dose hormone pulse therapy and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy, the CSF was improved, but the patient’s consciousness became worsen, consistent with the diffuse slow waves in the delta range and low voltage of EEG activity. In the following 1 month, the patient had non-responsiveness to pain and sound as shown by CVEEG with diffuse slow waves.Sometimes paroxysmal very slow waves(0.5–1 Hz)were synchronized with intermittent paroxysmal eye movements, pupil abnormality, and sweating in the frontal area. After 2 months of treatment, the EEG abnormalities improved to have alpha rhythm. Conclusion:The CVEEG not only helps identify NCSE but can also be used to monitor HSE progression.Wanhui Lin Shenggen Chen Hanbin Lin Changyun Liu Huapin Huang 2020Acta Epileptologica2020,2,1:0
Chaotic electrical stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus-mossy fiber sprouting, epileptic seizures, and brain electrical activity in pentylenetetrazol-kindled rats显示文摘BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that appropriate interventions can alter brain electrical activity of epileptic patients prior to and during a seizure, leading to maintenance of a highly chaotic state, thereby inhibiting abnormal epileptic discharges, and eventually controlling epileptic seizure. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to observe the effects of chaotic electrical stimulation to the subthalamic nucleus on mossy fiber sprouting, epileptic seizures, and electrical discharges, and to summarize the most suitable intervention. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: This randomized grouping, neuroelectrophysiological study was performed at the Laboratory of Neurology, Union Hospital Affiliated to Fujian Medical University in September 2007. MATERIALS: Fifty-five healthy, male, Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to an epileptic model by an intraperitoneal injection of pentylenetetrazol. The YC-2 programmed electrical stimulator was provided by Chengdu Instrument Factory, China; the video electroencephalographic system (KT-88-2400) and 24-hour active electroencephalographic system were products of Contec Medical System Co., Ltd., China; pentylenetetrazol was purchased from Sigma, USA. METHODS: The present interventional method consisted of electrical stimulation to the subthalamic nucleus with an intensity of 500 μA, pulse width 0.05 ms, frequency 30 Hz, and a duration of 20 minutes for 14 successive days. Fifty-five rats were divided into 6 groups: (1) pre-stimulation (n = 10), pentylenetetrazol was administered and 30 minutes later, chaotic electrical stimulation was performed; (2) synchronous stimulation (n = 10), rats received pentylenetetrazol and chaotic electrical stimulation concurrently; (3) post-administration stimulation (n = 10), after pentylenetetrazol administration, chaotic electrical stimulation was performed immediately after cessation of a seizure; (4) sham-stimulation (n = 10), following pentylenetetrazol administration, an electrode was connected to the stimulator, but electrical stimulation was not performed; (5) control (n = 10), pentylenetetrazol administration, but no electrode was implanted; (6) blank control (n = 50), administration of the same amount of physiological saline and chaotic electrical stimulation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Timm-stained granule change was scored. Simultaneously, electroencephalography was performed to acquire seizure counts and time course of epileptic discharge within 24 hours. RESULTS: Timm scores were lower in the electrically stimulated rats than in the non-stimulated rats (P < 0.01). Timm scores were lowest in the synchronous stimulation group. When the rats suffered from tonic clonic seizure, the electroencephalogram primarily showed a persistent spike-slow wave and sharp wave. For the electrically stimulated rats, the mean values of seizure counts and time course of epileptic discharge during each hour were noticeably decreased compared with the non-stimulated rats. The synchronous stimulation group, however, had the lowest seizure counts and the shortest time course, followed by the pre-stimulation group, and lastly the post-administration stimulation group. Significant differences existed among the groups (P < 0.01). Compared with the pre-stimulation group and the post-administration stimulation group, the latent period of grades Ⅰ and Ⅳ epileptic seizures was significantly prolonged, and the time course of tonic clonic seizure, as well as total time course, were significantly shortened in the synchronous stimulation group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Simultaneous administration of pentylenetetrazol together with chaotic electrical stimulation produced the greatest inhibitory effects on epileptic seizures. This is possibly related to inhibition of abnormal mossy fiber spouting in the hippocampus.Shenggen Chen Chunhui Che Huapin Huang Changyun Liu Xiaoyun Zhuang Fang Jiang 2008Neural Regeneration Research2008,3,6:0
