^(137)Cs Finger Printing Technique for Erosion and Sedimentation Studies显示文摘137 Cs is an artificial radionuclide with a half-life of 30.2 years, which was released into the environment as a byproduct of atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons during the period of 1950s to 1970s with a peak deposition in 1963.137 Cs fallout was strongly and rapidly adsorbed by soil particles when it deposited on the ground mostly with precipitation. Its following movements will associate with the adsorbed particles.137 Cs tracing technique has been widely used in soil erosion and sedimentation studies since 1980s.This paper introduces the basis of the technique and shows several case studies of assessment of soil erosion rates, investigation of sediment sources and dating of reservoir deposits by using the technique in the Loess Plateau and the Upper Yangtze River Basin.LONG Yi ZHANG Xinbao WEN Anbang HE Xiubin 2012Journal of Mountain Science2012,9,1:5
Fingerprinting the sources of water-mobilized sediment threatening agricultural and water resource sustainability:Progress, challenges and prospects in China显示文摘Sediment source fingerprinting apportions the sources of sediment produced by water erosion by linking sampled sediment mixtures and landscape source materials using diagnostic and conservative fingerprints.Using this approach, the nature and location of active sediment sources across the catchment can be elucidated, generating information which is a key prerequisite for the design and implementation of catchment management strategies. The science of sediment source fingerprinting continues to attract much research globally, but to date, there have been relatively few fingerprinting studies in China. Here, there remain major challenges for the fingerprinting approach arising from the uniqueness of Chinese landscapes, including for instance, the complex land use configuration with highly fragmented or mosaic patches and the highly dynamic land use conversion rates, generating a need to test the physical basis for the discriminatory power and environmental behavior of both traditional and novel tracers.Future research is needed to investigate the applicability of tracer properties in different physiographic settings and to evaluate the potential strategic utility of the approach for supporting the improved management of soil and water sustainability. Here, the strategic availability of independent observation data for different components of catchment sediment budgets and well-maintained research infrastructure for plots,micro-catchments and drainage basins provides immediate opportunity for testing the approach and refining procedures.Such detailed testing across scales would be invaluable for promoting sediment source fingerprinting as both a scientific and management tool for informing soil and water conservation practices in China.Qiang TANG Bojie FU Anbang WEN Xinbao ZHANG Xiubin HE Adrian LCOLLINS 2019Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,12:4
Developing a sustainable strategy to conserve reservoir marginal landscapes显示文摘China has accelerated its pace in building dams to meet growing demands in energy consumption,as well as to alleviate air pollution resulting from fossil fuel emissions and to mitigate global climate change impacts.Large rivers in southwestern China(i.e.the Jinsha,Yalong,Dadu,Wu,Nu,Lancang and upper Yangtze rivers)have primarily been targeted as major basins for hydropower development, where cascade dams have been constructed or are proposed.Among them, the Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydropowerqiang tang bojie fu adrian l.collins anbang wen xiubin he yuhai bao 2018National Science Review2018,5,1:2

A Preliminary Study on Traditional Level-trench Method to Prevent Rill Initiation in the Three Gorges Region,China显示文摘The level-trench method is a traditional tillage operation to develop a drainage system on slope land in the Three Gorges region. Before crops are planted, farmers prepare the land with level trenches spaced 3-10 m apart, depending on the slope gradient:steeper slopes require shorter distances.Little scientific analysis has been done on the use of traditional level trenches for soil conservation. We conducted a field investigation and simulation experiments, and present a comparison between the spacing of level trenches and the slope length required for rill initiation. The results indicate that the spacing of level trenches in farmland is close to the slope length required for rill initiation in the experimental plots, and regression models of trench spacing with the gradient and the slope length required for rill initiation with the gradient have similar formats;the coefficients of determination (R2) for the two equations are 0.99 and 0.88,respectively.There were some differences between the field survey and experiments, but we conclude that the traditional level-trench method has an important role in preventing rill initiation.YAN Dongchun WEN Anbang HE Xiubin SHI Zhonglin XIONG Donghong LONG Yi 2011Journal of Mountain Science2011,8,6:1
^(137)Cs and^(210)Pb_(ex) as Soil Erosion Tracers in the Hilly Sichuan Basin and the Three Gorges Area of China显示文摘Accelerated soil erosion and land degradation represent major environmental problems for agricultural lands.Reliable information on the rates of soil loss is urgently needed. The traditional techniques for documenting rates of soil loss may meet this need, but face many limitations. The fallout radionuclides, especially 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex,are increasingly used as effective tracers to quantify soil erosion rates, and they represent a valuable complement to the existing classical methods. This paper aims to introduce the basis for assessing soil erosion rates on cultivated and uncultivated slopes by using 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex measurements,to compare the 137 Cs and 210 Pb ex reference inventories, and to report several case studies undertaken in the hilly area of Sichuan Basin and the Three Gorges area of China.SHI Zhonglin WEN Anbang ZHANG Xinbao HE Xiubin LI Hao YAN Dongchun 2012Journal of Mountain Science2012,9,1:0
