摘　　要：This paper reports a pilot study, which examines culture differences in a social function of language, i.e., the function of promise making using Searle’s constitutive rules. It is to argue that different cultures may have the same type of speech-act such as promise, which, however, represents different cultural concepts. Evidence supporting the argument was drawn from a comparison of performance of Americans and Orientals concerning their respective concepts of promise making. 关键词：演讲艺术社会语言文化差异英语
