| 1 | Evolving paradigms in biological carbon cycling in the ocean显示文摘Carbon is a keystone element in global biogeochemical cycles. It plays a fundamental role in biotic andabiotic processes in the ocean, which intertwine to mediate the chemistry and redox status of carbon in the ocean and the atmosphere. The interactions between abiotic and biogenic carbon(e.g.CO_2,Ca CO_3,organic matter)in the ocean are complex, and there is a half-century-old enigma about the existence of a huge reservoir of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon(RDOC)that equates to the magnitude of the pool of atmospheric CO_2.The concepts of the biological carbon pump(BCP)and the microbial loop(ML)shaped our understanding of the marine carbon cycle. The more recent concept of the microbial carbon pump(MCP),which is closely connected to those of the BCP and the ML,explicitly considers thesignificance of the ocean’s RDOC reservoir and provides a mechanistic framework for the exploration of its formation and persistence.Understanding of the MCP has benefited from advanced‘omics’and novel research in biological oceanography and microbial biogeochemistry. The need to predict the ocean’sresponse to climate change makes an integrative understanding of the BCP,ML and MCP a high priority. In this review,we summarize and discuss progress since the proposal of the MCP in 2010 and formulate research questions for the future. | Chuanlun Zhang Hongyue Dang Farooq Azam Ronald Benner Louis Legendre Uta Passow Luca Polimene Carol Robinson Curtis A.Suttle Nianzhi Jiao | 2018 | National Science Review2018,5,4: | 12 |
| 2 | Bio-Organic Geochemistry research in China: Advances, opportunities and challenges显示文摘The discipline of 'Bio-Organic Geochemistry' is a cross research field between biogeochemistry and traditional organic geochemistry, which focuses on geochemical processes related to the biosynthesis of organic molecules(particularly lipids) by(micro) organisms, organic matter production by primary producers, degradation of organic matter by microbial processes recorded by retainable lipid biomarkers, and organic proxies for studies of paleo-climate, paleo-environments, paleoecology and Earth evolution. This field aims to go beyond the traditional petroleum-oriented Organic Geochemistry by integrating with biogeochemical concepts concerned mostly with biomolecules from cellular material such as DNA and lipids. A formal Chinese organization in Bio-Organic Geochemistry was established in 2012 when the first conference was held in Guangzhou. This organization has witnessed rapid growth over the past six years with focused research addressing organic proxies in paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental applications, with particular rapid development in glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers-derived proxies. Most progresses in China so far are made following or paralleling the international trend in biogeochemical studies. Things have begun to change with China's ambitious initiatives in several bio-geo programs such as the Ocean Deep Drilling Program of China, the Microbial Hydrosphere Program, the Deep Carbon Observatory, and the Microbiome Program. Looking forward in the 21 st Century, the growing Chinese research community in Bio-Organic Geochemistry faces grand opportunities and challenges as Chinese scientists propel themselves toward global research frontiers. | Chuanlun ZHANG Ping'an PENG Meixun ZHAO Shucheng XIE Jianfang CHEN Weiguo LIU | 2018 | Science China Earth Sciences2018,61,12: | 2 |
| 3 | Spectral characteristics of dissolved organic matter in sediment pore water from Pearl River Estuary显示文摘As key parts of land-sea transition zones, estuary ecosystems play a very important role in the ocean carbon cycle processes. The sources, degradation, and preservation of dissolved organic matter(DOM)in estuaries have long been the subject of intense study. To examine the aforementioned issues, this study examined three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy to determine the spatial distribution and sources of DOM in the pore water of three sedimentary cores from the Pearl River Estuary(S1,S2 and S3,with increasing salinity).Using the parallel factor analysis(PARAFAC)method to analyze the three-dimensional fluorescence spectrum data, five fluorescent components were obtained—three humic-like components(C1,C3,and C4),and two protein-like components(C2 and C5).C2 exhibited a significant positive correlation with the sediment microbial deoxyribose nucleic acid(DNA)concentration(R~2=0.69,P<0.01),indicating that the protein-like component C2 might be derived from the catabolism of in situ microbes.C5 displayed a relatively weak correlation with DNA concentration(R~2=0.40,P<0.05),presumably due to the incorporation of phenolic compounds, which have a fluorescence peak very similar to that of protein-like components. The source of humic-like fluorescent components is extremely complex. The content at station S1 was relatively high(1.45–8.83 R.U.),which implies that terrestrial inputs had a significant influence. The three humic-like components showed similar distributions at S2 and S3,and the fluorescence intensity was rather low;this result indicates that the DOM at these two stations was more likely affected by the metabolism of algae and microorganisms. The humification index(HIX)and the fluorescence intensity of protein-like components increased and decreased, respectively, with depth. There was a significant positive correlation between the relative content of protein-like components and the spectral slope ratio(SR),which indicates that DOM transitioned from low-molecular-weight protein-like components in the surface sediment to high-molecular-weight humic-like components in the subsurface. This study provides valuable information for understanding the pore water size/reactivity(PWSR)model of DOM and its biochemical processes occurring in estuary sediments. | Yang XU Penghui LI Chuanlun ZHANG Peng WANG | 2021 | Science China Earth Sciences2021,64,1: | 1 |
| 4 | Production of dissolved organic carbon in the South China Sea:A modeling study显示文摘The South China Sea(SCS)is the largest semi-enclosed marginal sea in the western Pacific. The alternation of East Asian monsoon causes a significant seasonal pattern of chlorophyll, primary productivity, and export flux of sinking particles. However, the source and sink of dissolved organic carbon(DOC)pools with different bioavailability are less studied. Here we evaluated the seasonal production of DOC in labile,semi-labile and refractory forms using a coupled physical-biogeochemical model. This study aims to understand the dynamics and budgets of organic matters in the SCS.Model results show that the production of labile,semi-labile and refractory DOC is highly correlated with the net primary productivity(NPP)which is higher in winter and lower in summer, reflecting a dependence of DOC on the NPP.The seasonal variation in Pearl River discharge dominates the DOC production in the northern coastal region. In the northeast, the Kuroshio intrusion associated frontal system is attributed to cause high winter production. The DOC production in the southwest is controlled by both winter mixing and summer upwelling. The production of refractory DOC with the least bioavailability favors carbon sequestration. Its annual mean production is 1.8±0.5 mg C m^(−2) d^(−1),equivalent to 26%of the export flux of particulate organic carbon at 1000 m. | Wentao MA Peng XIU Yi YU Yiling ZHENG Fei CHAI | 2022 | Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,2: | 0 |
