1Community knowledge, attitude and practice towards cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic area Ochello,Gamo Gofa Zone,South Ethiopia显示文摘Objective: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of the community related to cutaneous leishmaniasis(CL) in an endemic area Ochello, Gamo Gofa Zone, South Ethiopia. Methods: We conducted community based cross-sectional survey among residents in Ochello from November to December 2014. The study area was purposely selected based on previous reports on endemicity of CL. Using simple random sampling technique, a total of 392 household participants were selected in the study area Ochello. Structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Regarding the responses given to knowledge, attitude and practice, a score of 1 was given for each right response and 0 for unsure responses. Data were double entered and analysis was conducted using SPSS version 20 statistical software.Descriptive statistics that include frequency and percentage were used to analyze the results. Results: In total, 392 individuals were participated in our study where 225(57.4%) of the participants were males and 167(42.6%) were females. Of all the total participants, 265(67.6%) had heard of the disease, and 127(32.4%) responded that they did not know CL.Based on the scoring results, 265(67.6%) participants were knowledgeable about CL. Out of 265 participants who heard about CL, most of them [215(54.8%)] had the attitude that CL was a problem in their area and had no positive attitude towards the treatment of CL.Approximately, 215(54.8%) replied that CL was preventable. Majority of the respondents did not sleep outdoors and did not practice sleeping near vegetation with or without bed net. Conclusions: The current finding indicated that the inhabitants of Ochello developed good awareness and encouraging attitude regarding CL. However, their prevention and control practice was very low. Hence, the result of this study calls for organized community awareness creation through various means.Nigatu Kebede Alemayehu Worku Ahmed Ali Abebe Animut Yohannes Negash Wondwossen Abebe Gebreyes Abhay Satoskar 2016Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2016,6,7:0
2Psychosocial impact of scars due to cutaneous leishmaniasis on high school students in Errachidia province,Morocco显示文摘Background:In Morocco, cutaneous leishmaniasis(CL)is usually known to be a slowly healing localized skin disease, but in some cases,it can lead to mutilating scars. The outbreak of CL due to Leishmania major in the Errachidia province in southeastern Morocco between 2008 and 2010 left many adolescents with permanent scar tissue on the face or other exposed body parts. We studied the psychosocial impact of CL on these young people. Methods:In 2015 we conducted a cross-sectional survey among high-school students living in boarding schools in two CL-endemic areas of Errachidia:Rissani and Tinejdad.A self-administered questionnaire elicited responses about general knowledge of CL and related scars. An open-ended question focused on the possible psychosocial effects associated with these scars. The quantitative data were analyzed with Epi Info^(TM)and the text data with NVivo software. Results:Almost 20%of 448 respondents reported they had experienced a CL lesion and 87%said it could possibly or definitely lead to psychological consequences. The text analysis showed that girls more often than boys expanded on the negative psychological effects of CL.The students considered CL as“dangerous”,“serious”,and“deathly”,and said it sometimes led to extreme suicidal ideations. Conclusions:The burden of CL in this age group is not negligible. The indelible CL scars lead to self-stigma and social stigma, and the emergence of negative psychological effects in this age group. While some students accepted their CL scars and related suffering as their“destiny”,others were eagerly demanding protective measures against CL and treatment for the scars.Issam Bennis Severine Thys Hind Filali Vincent De Brouwere Hamid Sahibi Marleen Boelaert 2017Infectious Diseases of Poverty2017,6,1:0
