| 3 | Numerical investigation of particle saltation in the bed-load regime显示文摘This paper numerically investigates particle saltation in a turbulent channel flow having a rough bed consisting of 2–3 layers of densely packed spheres.In this study,we combined three the state-of-the-art technologies,i.e.,the direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow,the combined finite-discrete element modelling of the deformation,movement and collision of the particles,and the immersed boundary method for the fluid-solid interaction.Here we verify our code by comparing the flow and particle statistical features with the published data and then present the hydrodynamic forces acting on a particle together with the particle coordinates and velocities,during a typical saltation.We found strong correlation between the abruptly decreasing particle stream-wise velocity and the increasing vertical velocity at collision,which indicates that the continuous saltation of large grain-size particles is controlled by collision parameters such as particle incident angle,local rough bed packing arrangement,and particle density,etc.This physical process is different from that of particle entrainment in which turbulence coherence structures play an important role.Probability distribution functions of several important saltation parameters and the relationships between them are presented.The results show that the saltating particles hitting the windward side of the bed particles are more likely to bounce off the rough bed than those hitting the leeside.Based on the above findings,saltation mechanisms of large grain-size particles in turbulent channel flow are presented. | JI ChunNing ANTE Munjiza ELDAD Avital XU Dong JOHN Williams | 2014 | Science China(Technological Sciences)2014,57,8: | 10 |

| 6 | Trabecular Plate Loss and Deteriorating Elastic Modulus of Femoral Trabecular Bone in Intertrochanteric Hip Fractures显示文摘Osteoporotic hip fracture is associated with significant trabecular bone loss,which is typically characterized as low bone density by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DXA)and altered microstructure by micro-computed tomography(μCT).Emerging morphological analysis techniques,e.g.individual trabecula segmentation(ITS),can provide additional insights into changes in plate-like and rod-like trabeculae,two major micro-structural types serving different roles in determining bone strength.Using ITS,we evaluated trabecular microstructure of intertrochanteric bone cores obtained from 23 patients undergoing hip replacement surgery for intertrochanteric fracture and 22 cadaveric controls.Micro-finite element(μFE)analyses were performed to further understand how the abnormalities seen by ITS might translate into effects on bone strength.ITS analyses revealed that,near fracture site,plate-like trabeculae were seriously depleted in fracture patients,but trabecular rod volume was maintained.Besides,decreased plate area and rod length were observed in fracture patients.Fracture patients also showed decreased elastic moduli and shear moduli of trabecular bone.These results provided evidence that in intertrochanteric hip fracture,preferential loss of plate-like trabeculae led to more rod-like microstructure and deteriorated mechanical competence adjacent to the fracture site,which increased our understanding of the biomechanical pathogenesis of hip fracture in osteoporosis. | Ji Wang Bin Zhou Ian Parkinson C.David L.Thomas John G.Clement Nick Fazzalari X.Edward Guo | 2013 | Bone Research2013,1,4: | 4 |
| 7 | Cost-efficient Thermal Management for a 48V Li-ion Battery in a Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle显示文摘The 48V mild hybrid system is a cost-efficient solution for original equipment manufacturers to meet increasingly stringent fuel consumption requirements.However,hybrid functions such as auto-stop/start and brake regeneration are unavailablewhen a 48V battery is at very low temperature because of its limited charge and discharge capability.Therefore,it is important to develop cost-efficient thermal management to warm-up the battery of a 48V mild hybrid electric vehicle(HEV)to recover hybrid functions quickly in cold climate.Following the model-based“V”process,we first define the requirements and then design different mechanisms to heat a 48V battery.Afterward,we build a 48V battery model in LMS AMESim and conduct co-simulation with simplified battery management system and hybrid control unit algorithms in MATLAB Simulink for analysis.Finally,we carry out a series of vehicle experiments at low temperature and observe the effect of heating to validate the design.Both simulation results and experimental data show that a cold 48V battery placed in a cabin with hot air can be heated effectively in the developed“Enhanced Generator Mode with 48V Battery”mode.The entire design is in a newly developed software that cyclically charges and discharges a 48V battery for quick warm-up in cold temperature without needing any additional hardware such as a heater,making it a cost-efficient solution for HEVs. | Chao Yu Guangji Ji Chao Zhang John Abbott Mingshen Xu Pieter Ramaekers Jianxiang Lu | 2018 | Automotive Innovation2018,1,4: | 3 |

| 18 | Distribution characteristics of inertial sediment particles in the turbulent boundary layer of an open channel flow determined using Voronoi analysis显示文摘This paper presents the numerical investigation of the distribution of inertial sediment particles in the turbulent boundary layer of an open channel flow with the particle Stokes number ranging from 0.6 to 20.4. The methodology is a combination of three numerical approaches, i.e. direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow, the point-particle immersed boundary method, and the discrete particle method. By applying the Vorono analysis, the preferential concentration characteristics of sediment particles were investigated quantitatively. It was found that the normalized area of the Voronoi cells follows a lognormal particle distribution. The inertial sediment particles distributed unevenly in the turbulent boundary layer and the unevenness, governed by the particle Stokes number, was more significant as the particle Stokes number approaches unity.
