Anatomy of composition and nature of plate convergence: Insights for alternative thoughts for terminal India-Eurasia collision显示文摘The pattern and timing of collision between India and Eurasia have long been a major concern of the international community. However, no consensus has been reached hitherto. To explore and resolve the disagreements in the Himalayan study,in this paper we begin with the methodology and basic principles for the anatomy of composition and nature of convergent margins, then followed by an effort to conduct a similar anatomy for the India-Eurasia collision. One of the most common patterns of plate convergence involves a passive continental margin, an active continental margin and intra-oceanic basins together with accreted terranes in between. The ultimate configuration and location of the terminal suture zone are controlled by the basal surface of the accretionary wedge, which may show fairly complex morphology with Z-shape and fluctuant geometry. One plausible method to determine the terminal suture zone is to dissect the compositions and structures of active continental margins. It requires a focus on various tectonic elements belonging to the upper plate, such as accretionary wedges, high-pressure(HP)-ultra-high-pressure(UHP) metamorphic rocks, Barrovian-type metamorphic rocks and basement nappes, together with superimposed forearc basins.Such geological records can define the extreme limits and the intervening surface separating active margin from the passive one, thus offering a general sketch for the surface trace of the terminal suture zone often with a cryptic feature. Furthermore, the occurrence of the cryptic suture zone in depth may be constrained by geophysical data, which, in combination with outcrop studies of HP-UHP metamorphic rocks, enables us to outline the terminal suture zone. The southern part of the Himalayan orogen records complicated temporal and spatial features, which are hard to be fully explained by the classic 'two-plate-one-ocean' template, therefore re-anatomy of the compositions and nature for this region is necessitated. Taking advantage of the methodology and basic principles of plate convergence anatomy and synthesizing previous studies together with our recent research, we may gain new insights into the evolution of the Himalayan orogeny.(1) The Yarlung-Zangbo ophiolite is composed of multiple tectonic units rather than a single terminal suture zone, and a group of different tectonic units were juxtaposed against each other in the backstop of the Gangdese forearc.(2) The Tethyan Himalayan Sequence(THS) contains mélanges with typical block-in-matrix structures, uniform southwards paleocurrents and age spectra of detrital zircons typical of Eurasia continent. All of these facts indicate that the THS belonged to Eurasia plate before the terminal collision, emplaced in the forearc of the Gangdese arc.(3) The Greater Himalayan Crystalline Complex(GHC) and Lesser Himalayan Sequence(LHS) comprise complex components including eclogites emplaced into the GHC and the upper part of the LHS. Judging from the fact that HP-UHP metamorphic rocks are exhumed and emplaced in the upper plate, the GHC and the upper part of the LHS where eclogite occur should be assigned to the upper plate, lying above the terminal subduction zone surface. It is the very surface along which the continuous subduction of the India subcontinent occurred, therefore acting as the terminal, cryptic suture. From the suture further southward, the bulk rock associations of the LHS and Sub-Himalayan Sequence(Siwalik) show little affinity of mélange, probably belonging to the foreland system of the India plate. By the anatomy of tectonic features of all the tectonic units in the Himalayan orogen as well as the ages of the subduction-accretion related deformation, we conclude that the terminal India-Eurasia collision occurred after 14 Ma, the timing of the metamorphism of the eclogites emplaced into the upper plate. The development of rifts stretching in N-S direction in Tibet and tectonic events with the transition from sinistral to dextral movements in shear zones, such as the Ailaoshan fault in East Tibet, can coordinately reflect the scale and geodynamic influence of the India-Eurasia convergence zone.By conducting a detailed anatomy of the southern Himalayas, we propose a new model for the final collision-accretion of the Himalayan orogeny. Our study indicates that the anatomy of structures, composition, and tectonic nature is the key to a better understanding of orogenic belts, which may apply to all the orogenic belts around the world. We also point out that several important issues regarding the detailed anatomy of the structures, compositions and tectonic nature of the Himalayan orogeny in future.XIAO WenJiao AO SongJian YANG Lei HAN ChunMing WAN Bo ZHANG Ji'En ZHANG ZhiYong LI Rui CHEN ZhenYu SONG ShuaiHua 2017Science China Earth Sciences2017,60,6:20
Dating of the Karakorum Strike-slip Fault显示文摘This paper mainly discusses the timing of the Karakorum strike-slip fault, and gives a brief introduction of its structures, offset, and deformational style. This fault strikes NNW-SSE. Asymmetrical folds, stretching lineation, S-C fabrics, feldspar and quartz (-porphyroclasts, domino structure, shear cleavages and faults in the fault zone are products of tectonic movements. They all indicate a dextral slip sense of faulting. Mylonitic bands are widely developed along this fault. Phengite appears, indicating rather high deformational pressure. Geochronological data indicate that the Karakorum strike-slip faulting occurred from 6.88(0.36 to 8.75(0.25 Ma. The cumulative displacement from Muztag Ata to Muji is about 135 km.ZHOU Yong, XU Ronghua, YAN Yuehua, PAN Yusheng,Tsanyao Frank YANG, Wei LO and WU Chunming Laboratory of Lithosphere Tectonic Evolution, Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100029Department of Geology, National Taiwan University, 245 Choushan Road, Taipei 106-17, TaiwanDepartment of Geology, Chinese Culture University, Hwa-kang, Yang-Ming-Shan, Taipei, Taiwan Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037 2001Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2001,75,1:12
Identification and fine mapping of two blast resistance genes in rice cultivar 93-11显示文摘Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is a major disease of rice almost worldwide. The Chinese indica cultivar 93-11 is resistant to numerous isolates of the blast fungus in China, and can be used as broad-spectrum resistance resource, particularly in japonica rice breeding programs. In this study, we identified and mapped two blast resistance genes, Pi60(t) and Pi61(t), in cv. 93-11 using F2 and F3 populations derived from a cross between the susceptible cv. Lijiangxintuanheigu(LTH) and resistant cv. 93-11 and inoculated with M. oryzae isolates from different geographic origins. Pi60(t) was delimited to a 274 kb region on the short arm of chromosome 11, flanked by InDel markers K1-4 and E12 and cosegregated with InDel markers B1 and Y10. Pi61(t) was mapped to a 200 kb region on the short arm(near the centromere) of chromosome 12, flanked by InDel markers M2 and S29 and cosegregating with InDel marker M9. In the 274 kb region of Pi60(t), 93-11 contains six NBS-LRR genes including the two Pia/ PiCO39 alleles(BGIOSGA034263 and BGIOSGA035032) which are quite close to the two Pia/ PiCO39 alleles(SasRGA4 and SasRGA5) in Sasanishiki and CO39, with only nine amino acids differing in the protein sequences of BGIOSGA035032 and SasRGA5. In the 200 kb region of Pi61(t), 93-11 contains four NBS-LRR genes, all of which show high identities in protein sequence with their corresponding NBS-LRR alleles in susceptible cv. Nipponbare. Comparison of the response spectra and physical positions between the target genes and other R genes in the same chromosome regions indicated that Pi60(t) could be Pia/PiCO39 or its allele, whereas Pi61(t) appears to be different from Pita, Pita-2, Pi19(t), Pi39(t) and Pi42(t) in the same R gene cluster. DNA markers tightly linked to Pi60(t) and Pi61(t) will enable marker-assisted breeding and map-based cloning.Cailin Lei Kun Hao Yilong Yang Jian Ma Shuai Wang Jiulin Wang Zhijun Cheng Shasha Zhao Xin Zhang Xiuping Guo Chunming Wang Jianmin Wan 2013The Crop Journal2013,1,1:8
Induced drill-spray during hydraulic slotting of a coal seam and its influence on gas extraction显示文摘Hydraulic slotting can induce drill spray in a gassy, low permeability coal seam. This then influences subsequent gas extraction. This paper describes the drill spray phenomenon from a mechanical perspective and analyzes the effects of water jet damage during slotting.A simulation of the stresses around the drill hole and slot was prepared using FLAC-3D code.It helps explain the induction of drill spray during hydraulic slotting. The stress concentration around the bore increases as the diameter of the hole increases. As the hole enlarges the variation in stress also increases, which introduces an instability into the coal. This allows easy breaking and removal of the coal.Destruction of the coal structure by the water jet is the major factor causing drill spray.Energy stored as either strain or gas pressure is released by the water jet and this causes the coal to fracture and be expelled from the hole.Field tests showed the effect on gas extraction after slotting with drill spray. The concentration of gas increases after drilling.Compared to conventional techniques, the hydraulic slotted bore gives a gas concentration three times higher and has an effective range twice as far. This makes the gas extraction process more efficient and allows reduced construction effort.Shen Chunming Lin Baiquan Zhang Qizhi Yang Wei Zhang Lianjun 2012International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2012,22,6:7
Effects of Mo on the Precipitation Behaviors in High-Nitrogen Austenitic Stainless Steels显示文摘Precipitation behaviors of Fe-18Cr-18Mn-0.63N and Fe-18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.69N high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steels during isothermally aging at 850℃ have been investigated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The experimental results show that precipitation displays a discontinuous cellular way and the precipitates are identified as Cr2N in Fe-18Cr-18Mn-0.63N steel. The addition of Mo makes precipitation occur not only at the grain boundary but also inside the grain and precipitation also displays discontinuous cellular way. The precipitates at the grain boundary and in the cell are both identified as Cr2N phase and χ phase and the precipitates inside the grain are identified as χ phase in Fe-18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.69N steel. The nucleations of χ phase and Cr2N phase at the grain boundary are both governed by the diffusion of Cr atoms. The formation and growth of χ phase inside the grain are induced by the impoverishment of N atoms with increasing aging time.Feng Shi Yang Qi Chunming Liu 2011Journal of Materials Science & Technology2011,27,12:7
Separation and characterization of petroleum asphaltene fractions by ESI FT-ICR MS and UV-vis spectrometer显示文摘Using heptane, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran (THF) as eluant, asphaltenes were fractionated into five fractions based on their polarity and solubility. The molecular composition of polar heteroatom species in both asphaltene and its fractions were analyzed by negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS). The application of UV-vis spectrometer in characterizing asphaltene composition and measuring asphaltene concentration was discussed. About 11.9 wt% asphaltene components adsorbed permanently on silica gel in the extrography column after excessive elution with various solvents. In negative FT-ICR MS, the mass spectra show that acidic and neutral nitrogen-containing compounds such as N1 and N1S1 mainly existe in the first three less polar fractions, while oxygen-containing compounds such as O2 , O2S, O2S2 , O3 , and O4 show high relative abundance in more polar fractions. These results suggest oxygen-containing compounds have stronger adsorption ability with silica gel. It was observed that the double bond equivalence (DBE) distribution of N1 class species in the fractions shifted to higher values while the carbon number shifted to smaller numbers as polarity of fractions increased. This indicates that acidic and neutral N1 compounds with longer carbon chain and less aromaticity have less polarity compared with those with shorter carbon chain and stronger aromaticity. UV-vis absorbance indicats that fractions containing the most aromatic and most polar asphaltene have better absorbance at long wavelength, while the fractions that consist of least aromatic and least polar asphatlenes show high absorbance at short wavelength.WANG ShanShan YANG Chuang XU ChunMing ZHAO SuoQi SHI Quan 2013Science China Chemistry2013,56,7:6
The effect of slight to minor biodegradation on C_6 to C_7 light hydrocarbons in crude oils: a case study from Dawanqi Oilfield in the Tarim Basin,NW China显示文摘Light hydrocarbons(LHs) are one of the main petroleum fractions in crude oils, and carry much information regarding the genetic origin and alteration of crude oils. But secondary alterations—especially biodegradation—have a significant effect on the composition of LHs in crude oils. Because most of the LHs affected in oils underwent only slight biodegradation(rank 1 on the biodegradation scale), the variation of LHs can be used to describe more the refined features of biodegradation. Here,23 crude oils from the Dawanqi Oilfield in the Tarim Basin, NW China, eleven of which have been biodegraded to different extents, were analyzed in order to investigate the effect of slight to minor biodegradation on C_6–C_7 LHs.The study results showed that biodegradation resulted in the prior depletion of straight-chained alkanes, followed by branched alkanes. In slight and minor biodegraded oils, such biodegradation scale could not sufficiently affect C_6–C_7cycloalkanes. For branched C_6–C_7 alkanes, generally, monomethylalkanes are biodegraded earlier than dimethylalkanes and trimethylalkanes, which indicates that branched alkanes are more resistant to biodegradation, with the increase of substituted methyl groups on parent rings. The degree of alkylation is one of the primary controlling factors on the biodegradation of C_6–C_7 LHs. There is a particular case: although 2,2,3-trimethylbutane has a relative higher alkylation degree, 2,2-dimethylpentane is more resistant to biodegradation than 2,2,3-trimethylbutane. 2,2-Dimethylpentane is the most resistant to biodegradation in branched C_6–C_7 alkanes. Furthermore, the 2-methylpentane/3-methylpentane and 2-methylhexane/3-methylhexane ratios decreased steadily with increasing biodegradation, which implies that isomers of bilateral methyl groups are more prone to bacterial attack relative to mid-chain isomers. The position of the alkyls on the carbon skeleton is also one of the critical factors controlling the rate of biodegradation. With increasing biodegradation, Mango's LH parameters K1 values decrease and K2 values increase, the values of n-heptane and isoheptane decrease, and the indices of methylcyclohexane and cyclohexane increase.LH parameters should be applied cautiously for the biodegraded oils. Because biodegraded samples belong to slight or minor biodegraded oils, the values of n-heptane and isoheptane from Dawanqi Oilfield can better reflect and determine the ‘‘Biodegraded'' zone. When the heptane value is 0–21 and the isoheptane value is 0–2.6, the crude oil in Dawanqi Oilfield is defined as the ‘‘Biodegraded'' zone.Lu Yang Chunming Zhang Meijun Li Jing Zhao Xuening Qi Jinxiu Du 2016Acta Geochimica2016,35,2:5

OsPKpa_1 encodes a plastidic pyruvate kinase that affects starch biosynthesis in the rice endosperm显示文摘Pyruvate kinase(PK) is a key enzyme in glycolysis and carbon metabolism. Here, we isolated a rice(Oryza sativa) mutant, w59, with a white-core floury endosperm. Map-based cloning of w59 identified a mutation in OsPKpa_1, which encodes a plastidic isoform of PK(PKp). OsPKpa_1 localizes to the amyloplast stroma in the developing endosperm, and the mutation of OsPKpa_1 in w59 decreases the plastidic PK activity, resulting in dramatic changes to the lipid biosynthesis in seeds. The w59 grains were also characterized by a marked decrease in starch content. Consistent with a decrease in number and size of the w59 amyloplasts, large empty spaces were observed in the central region of the w59 endosperm, atthe early grain-filling stage. Moreover, a phylogenetic analysis revealed four potential rice isoforms of OsPKp. We validated the in vitro PK activity of these OsPKps through reconstituting active PKp complexes derived from inactive individual OsPKps, revealing the heteromeric structure of rice PKps, which was further confirmed using a protein–protein interaction analysis. These findings suggest a functional connection between lipid and starch synthesis in rice endosperm amyloplasts.Yue Cai Wenwei Zhang Jie Jin Xiaoming Yang Xiaoman You Haigang Yan Liang Wang Jie Chen Jiahuan Xu Weiwei Chen Xingang Chen Jing Ma Xiaojie Tang Fei Kong Xiaopin Zhu Guoxiang Wang Ling Jiang William Terzaghi Chunming Wang Jianmin Wan 2018Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2018,60,11:3
Thermal transformation of acid compounds in high TAN crude oil显示文摘The Liaohe crude oil with high total acid number (TAN) was subjected to thermal reaction at 300℃to 500℃. Reaction products were collected and analyzed by negative-ion electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) to determine acid compounds in the crude oil. The double-bond equivalence (DBE) versus carbon number was used to characterize the oxygenated components in the feed and reaction products. The O2 class which mainly corresponds to naphthenic acids decarboxylated at 350-400℃, resulting in a sharply decrease in TAN. Phenols (O1 class) are more thermally stable than carboxylic acids. Carboxylic acids were also thermally cracked into smaller molecular size acids, evidenced by the presence of acetic acid, propanoic acid, and butyric acid in the liquid product. These small acid species are strong acids likely responsible for corrosion problems in refineries.YANG BaiBing XU ChunMing ZHAO SuoQi HSU Chang Samuel CHUNG Keng H. 13Effects of experimental conditions on the molecular composition of maltenes and asphaltenes derived from oilsands bitumen: Characterized by negative-ion ESI FT-ICR MS显示文摘A vacuum topped Canadian oilsands bitumen (VTB) was subjected to solvent precipitation and subsequently characterized by elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatograph (GPC), 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and negative-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). Effects of experimental conditions such as solvent types (n-C5 , n-C6 , and n-C7 ), solvent purity, and solvent washing time on asphaltenes yields, bulk composition, and molecular composition of detectable heteroatom compounds in ESI source were determined. Elemental nitrogen and sulfur were enriched in asphaltenes while elemental oxygen had comparable content in maltenes and asphaltenes. Molecular composition of asphaltenes varies with separation conditions. The N1 and O1 species identified by ESI FT-ICR MS were enriched in maltenes. The O2 species exhibited two different double bond equivalents (DBE) distributions and solubility in normal paraffin solvents, indicating two types of molecular structures. Multi oxygen atom containing compounds mainly detected in asphaltenes. Compound class distributions are similar for maltenes derived from n-C5 , n-C6 , and n-C7 , as well as for asphaltenes. The cyclic paraffin impurities in normal paraffin solvents had a significant influence on asphaltenes yields and heteroatom molecular composition. A portion of neutral N1 species and acidic O2 species adsorbed on asphaltenes could be dissolved by increasing washing time. Cautions should be exercised when interpreting the properties and composition of asphaltenes obtained with different experimental conditions.WANG LiTao HE Chen LIU Yang ZHAO SuoQi ZHANG YaHe XU ChunMing CHUNG Keng H. 18Traumatic brain injury induced by exposure to blast overpressure via ear canal显示文摘Exposure to explosive shockwave often leads to blast-induced traumatic brain injury in military and civilian populations.Unprotected ears are most often damaged following exposure to blasts.Although there is an association between tympanic membrane perforation and TBI in blast exposure victims, little is known about how and to what extent blast energy is transmitted to the central nervous system via the external ear canal. The present study investigated whether exposure to blasts directed through the ear canal causes brain injury in LongEvans rats.Animals were exposed to a single blast(0–30 pounds per square inch(psi))through the ear canal, and brain injury was evaluated by histological and behavioral outcomes at multiple time-points.Blast exposure not only caused tympanic membrane perforation but also produced substantial neuropathological changes in the brain, including increased expression of c-Fos,induction of a profound chronic neuroinflammatory response, and apoptosis of neurons. The blast-induced injury was not limited only to the brainstem most proximal to the source of the blast, but also affected the forebrain including the hippocampus, amygdala and the habenula, which are all involved in cognitive functions.Indeed, the animals exhibited long-term neurological deficits, including signs of anxiety in open field tests 2 months following blast exposure, and impaired learning and memory in an 8-arm maze 12 months following blast exposure. These results suggest that the unprotected ear canal provides a locus for blast waves to cause TBI.This study was approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at the University of Mississippi Medical Center(Animal protocol#0932 E,approval date:September 30,2016 and 0932 F,approval date:September 27,2019).Yang Ou Brad AClifton Jinghui Li David Sandlin Na Li Li Wu Chunming Zhang Tianwen Chen Jun Huang Yue Yu Jerome Allison Fan Fan Richard JRoman James Shaffery Wu Zhou Yi Pang Hong Zhu 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,1:1

Occurrence, Prevention and Control of Cryphalus eriobotryae, a New Devastating Pest of Loquat显示文摘A devastating trunk beetle has been found in Baisha loquat in Dongshan Town, Wuzhong District, Suzhou City in recent years. It is iden-tified as a new insect species, Cryphalus eriobotryae, belonging to Scolytinae, Curculionidae, Coleoptera. So far, loquat is known as the unique host of C. eriobotryae, and trees of 20-30 years old or 3-4 years old are all attacked by the insect. Holes drilled by adults with the diameter of about0.8 mm and sores(ate by adults) with the diameter of 1 mm are found on bark and trunk of damaged trees. Three-dimensional channels in 3-4 layers are formed in cortex, which are filled with insect dung. The phloem turns black-brown in late stage, and loses transport function, resulting in plant death and a great impact on loquat production and industrial development. During the occurrence period of C. eriobotryae from April to November, the damaged trunks and branches should be sprayed with 48% chlorpyrifos EC or 5% imidacloprid EC 100 times dilution once every 10 d for con-tinuous 2-3 times, and various states of the insect could be killed. If the phloem is damaged in the early and middle stages and does not turn black and brown completely, the plant could grow new cortex to realize recovery.Li Haoyu Yang Daqiang Cai Ping Xu Chunming 2019Plant Diseases and Pests2019,10,3:1
